After Monday off…
6:45 p.m.
LHP Steven Matz (0-3, 6.23) vs. LHP Patrick Sandoval (2-1, 3.16)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
(and Bally Sports Southeast/Southwest Extra)April 30, 2023 at 9:46 am #218400I think the day off will be helpful.
I hope Arenado comes around soon….
April 30, 2023 at 6:04 pm #21846910-19.
Wow.

ParticipantLuckily today is an off day. The fans can surely use it. This has been brutal. If we don’t get some relief for the rotation… we’ll be sellers at the deadline. Can you imagine that??
We are truly missing Arenado’s bat… how much are we missing Yadi’s presence behind the plate. Some of the pitchers may be disappointed with Contreras but won’t make a peep about it.
May 1, 2023 at 11:32 am #218533Arenado’s body language is bad. He looks so unhappy.
May 1, 2023 at 11:32 am #218534The team will come home to big crowds and big ratings. Life is good.
Facing a lefty not named Kershaw will help. Maybe we can win an opener at last. Take a series and all is forgotten like it never happened.
May 1, 2023 at 1:18 pm #218537Well, I would think they would need to at least claw back to .500 before all is forgotten, lol.
So I guess go 19-10 (or better) this month and be sitting at 29-29 with an upward trend….
May 1, 2023 at 3:13 pm #218551Arenado’s body language is bad. He looks so unhappy.
He needs to get over it. He isn’t playing for free and part of the reason we are 10-19 is because of him.
May 1, 2023 at 3:46 pm #218558I’m reasonably certain a decent sized gate will show up for this homestand, but it’ll be interesting to see the reaction of fans if the poor play continues for these next 6 games in StL. If Cardinal fans are unhappy about the current state of affairs and wish for their voices to be taken into account, I can’t think of a better forum in which to conduct open public discourse than that of the ballpark. Moreover, the purchase of a ticket has always entitled fans to the right of expression within reason.

Attendees are not what they used to be. A substantial percentage would have little to no idea how many games back the team is, or even what that means, and do not care.
May 1, 2023 at 5:02 pm #218567Well, if that’s the case, I wasn’t aware of it, Bling. At any rate, I’m not necessarily referencing boos or jeering, although I’d say that the purchase of a ticket certainly entitles the person who possesses the stub the right to do so within reason. I always reserved that sort of behavior exclusively for umpires and have never booed even an opposing player simply because I know they take that sort of thing as a compliment… A few cleverly worded signs directed at ownership, upper management, etc. seem to be effective and can be seen from an enclosed sky box that is hopefully occupied. In any event, if any of the gate do indeed wish to express their disappointment with the product that they’ve paid to see, I can’t imagine a better place to do so than from a seat at the ballpark.
May 1, 2023 at 6:58 pm #218575We could gain some ground this week folks.
Pittsburgh is at Tampa Bay and then they have three against Toronto at Three Rivers Stadium.
Milwaukee is at Colorado and then they have a weekend series against the Giants at Candlestick.
We might be able to pick up 2-3 games in the standings and get some momentum going.

May 1, 2023 at 7:15 pm #218577The Angels record is around .500, similar to the Dodgers. We are at home, but still might have trouble if we don’t play better. The Tigers record is almost as bad as ours, so we stand a good chance even if we don’t play better. All in all, we could do better than we’ve been doing lately. 3-3 for the six game stand. 4-2 seems too optimistic, but you know me, I’m hoping for 5-1.
May 1, 2023 at 7:19 pm #218578This is as good a write up on the Cardinal woes as I have seen.

I think Bernie just set the world record for most stats crammed into one article. Word salad with numbers.
I’m sure he’s right, but we already knew all the stats stink, they’d have to, even the ones we’ve never heard of.
The conversation needs to move on from how bad are we to what can be done about it. I wish he’d write about that.

Play better. Play weaker teams. Combine the two.

If any of us really knew that we’d be getting paid to do it, lol.
So we talk, speculate, spitball, throw out suggestions of what we’d do, etc. – but from me to you to Bernie – it’s all just a bunch of hot air.
May 1, 2023 at 9:40 pm #218587On June 1st of ’22 the team that beat the Cardinals in the first round of the ’22 post-season was 12.5 back of first place in the NLE.
May 2, 2023 at 1:44 pm #218608Other than getting better production from several players, the only thing we can do about it is try changing managers. Now and then that works. It worked for the ‘22 Phillies and 2009 Rockies.
The 2003 Marlins went on to a championship after firing Jeff Torborg and bring in Jack McKeon.
Our club played better under Mike Shildt when he took over for Mike Matheny. Who knows, maybe that is the thing we need to do.
May 2, 2023 at 2:20 pm #218609It is interesting all the examples of teams that were far behind at any point of season making the playoffs. Those are the exception. Most won’t make it. The Cardinals have plenty of time to do just that. This team may get back probably will but they are just not that good.
May 2, 2023 at 2:39 pm #218611I would like to see our starters pitch inside more, and quit nibbling. We need some good outings from Matz among others. If Matz continues pitching poorly, Liberatore should be considered.
May 2, 2023 at 2:53 pm #218613Pretty good article by Bernie. It is worthwhile because he faults everyone in the organization basically instead of singling out one or two people. That is what I have been saying. This has been a colossal failure from everyone involved.

Coming Tuesday: A look at the Cards’ chances of getting back into the NL Central race.
Maybe he is.
May 2, 2023 at 3:01 pm #218614In order to make a run after falling substantially behind, teams prior to this year certainly had more opportunities to make up a large deficit in the standings. With only about a dozen matchups with divisional opponents, making up some quick ground will be more dependent on help from other teams. Oh well, nothing’s ever easy.
