The only stat I’ve heard is that over 50% of the crowds at the stadium on the weekends during the summer come from outside a radius of 50 miles of St. Louis. People travel from the regional area into St. Louis for a game or two and other local attractions like the Arch, the museums, the Brewery, etc.
I’m sure every player wants the team that they grow up rooting for to draft them. However, I have yet to hear of one who will only play for the team they grew up rooting for. Every fan would like to see a local kid play for their favorite team. I just hope the Cardinals make their decisions based on only baseball related decisions. It shouldn’t matter where the player hails from, or whether or not the Cardinals drafted them. It should only matter how they can help the Cardinals win more games than they would without them.
The Cardinals have a huge fan base from Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Iowa, Indiana, Tennessee, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and maybe even Kansas. I believe the Cardinal Radio Network used to be the largest in MLB. I am not sure if it still is since so many people can watch on TV now compared to the older days.
