I hadn’t thought of it that way, but I think I agree. Maybe it is just me, but this World Series seems to lack the excitement of recent ones. I am watching, sort of, but am not captivated.
October 25, 2018 at 7:55 am #73125Teams in the last century to lose 2 consecutive World Series:
2010-11 Texas Rangers
1991-92 Atlanta Braves
1977-78 Los Angeles Dodgers
1963-64 New York Yankees
1952-53 Brooklyn Dodgers
1936-37 New York Giants
1923-24 New York Giants
1921-22 New York Yankees2017-18 Dodgers???

stlcard25ParticipantIt’s harder to be excited when the teams aren’t even the big ticket in their own cities, and they’ve both been postseason mainstays forever, it feels like.
October 25, 2018 at 8:58 am #73138The last time a team lost the 1st 2 games on the road and still won the World Series? Those ‘81 #Dodgers, of course. Then again, the #Redsox are undefeated on the road this postseason, 5-0, and hitting ridiculous .415 with 2 outs and RISP. https://t.co/vRq9lO1pGu

I’m almost hoping for a sweep just so that we can get to the trades and such…Same here. The hot stove league is much more interesting.
Although I should add that all of my friends here in Arkansas love watching Benintendi since he is an ex UA player.
October 25, 2018 at 2:40 pm #73162I’m watching a bit of the games but as neither team really has any interest for me I’d much rather talk about trades once they can actually happen and such, as we can speculate till we’re all blue in the face and all…guess I’ll have to watch Yellowbeard for now…and try not to laugh to hard…stagger, stagger, roll, roll…
October 27, 2018 at 2:32 am #73308Dodgers win Game 3 to pull to 2-1 in games on Max Muncy’s walkoff home run in the 18th inning. The game ran seven hours, 20 minutes. I am very tired.
October 27, 2018 at 3:04 am #73310How can you be tired, Brian? In the front row Larry King was yelling at the ump in the 18th inning — just like he did during Babe Ruth’s 14-inning complete game.
October 27, 2018 at 8:06 am #73314Since Larry is 84, I don’t have much of a defense. I admit that I dozed off briefly during the 12th inning, but Larry kept rolling. My only explanation is that he is used to working nights and given he has been married eight times, he undoubtedly has a very high level of built-in energy.
During the game, I teased about King and Mary Hart on Twitter and Jim Hayes responded by advising me to give Larry a break! (I liked his tweet.)
I wonder if he will bounce back tonight. I am guessing yes. I just hope someone else is driving him.
October 27, 2018 at 8:41 am #7332618 innings of baseball meant 18 innings-plus of commercials. I couldn't take it anymore, so I collected clips of the ones that have irritated me the most from this MLB post-season. https://t.co/tFJbZw5RJY pic.twitter.com/GLqA5iN99Q

October 27, 2018 at 9:53 am #73355I have a fond place in my heart for Larry King, as he’s the one who got me hooked on talk radio. For a few months back in 1980-something when I was in my mid 20’s, a buddy and I would drive up from Phoenix to Black Canyon City every Wednesday night to go bet on the dogs. While driving home we always drowned our sorrow in beer and rock music…….until this one evening where in a weak moment I checked out the AM stations and I stumbled upon two gentlemen chatting. I knew nothing about either. But the chat was amusing so we listened longer. The two turned out to be Larry King and Rex Reed. And that became our Wednesday night ritual….drinking beer and listening to rock music from Phoenix to Black Canyon City, losing a wad of cash on the puppies while there and then drinking beer and listening to Larry King on the way back to Phoenix. Luckily, the only habit from those trips that had longevity was the listening to Larry King part.
18’s were certainly wild in that game last night. 18 innings, 18 combined hits, the year ’18….there had to be others. I took an unintended catnap from the top of the 13th until the bottom of the 17th, which was perfect timing for catching the conclusion.
October 27, 2018 at 11:10 pm #73376Larry stayed away Saturday night. He’s no dummy. Rich Hill was dealing for the Dodgers until he was taken out. Then the Dodgers bullpen imploded and they lost 9-6. Boston leads the Series 3-1.
October 28, 2018 at 7:54 am #73378In the ninth inning last night, there was yet another Machado spiking incident. https://t.co/9esAKZfU7l

I have been consistently amazed at the short hooks these managers have in this series. Hill was cruising with a one-hitter through six and a third, with 91 pitches and a four-run lead. He had earned a little more time, especially given the Dodgers uneven bullpen work so far.
Joe Kelly has kept the ball over the plate in this series, and has looked good. He’s always had great stuff, and can be effective when the command is there.
So far this post season has gone exactly as I thought it would. I went with Red Sox in five in the Series, so that could happen as well.
October 28, 2018 at 10:34 am #73387It’s harder to be excited when the teams aren’t even the big ticket in their own cities, and they’ve both been postseason mainstays forever, it feels like.
I have always thought these two teams were the big ticket in their areas. The only team close to the Dodgers in Southern California are the Lakers, and they have been down for awhile although with LeBron they have some star power again.
The Patriots have never quite attained the status of the Red Sox, despite the dynasty. I think the name change to “New England” back in the ’70s keeps them thought of as more of a regional team, whereas in the Boston area the Red Sox are tops, with the Bruins a strong number 2.
But then I have never lived there, so my perception could be entirely wrong.
October 28, 2018 at 10:56 am #73389Kelly has pitched well in the post season, but has been a disappointment overall. In his five years with Boston, he had just one season during which he was better than league average, 2017. This year, his ERA was 4.39.
October 28, 2018 at 12:01 pm #73391bicyclemike, I’m not from Boston but I would have figured the Celtics would rank higher than the Bruins in that area, but since I’m from the South I’ve never understood how anyone could like hockey anyway.
October 28, 2018 at 3:41 pm #73397Weren’t the 2016 @Cubs in a 3-1 hole? You darn tootin’. However, of 47 teams with a 3-1 lead in #WorldSeries 40 of them (85.1%) have won. 26 of them won Game 5 (55.3%)

jj-cf-stlParticipantThey say take a half run off an AL ERA to equalize an NL ERA.
So Kelly as an equivalent NL 3.89 this season doesn’t look too bad?
October 28, 2018 at 9:00 pm #73406No need to estimate. That is what ERA+ is for. It is normalized across parks and leagues. Kelly’s ERA+ this season was 100. That is the definition of an MLB average pitcher. It was below 100 in three of the four years prior to 2018. I hope the Cards can do better than that.
Cardinals 2018 relievers with a better than 100 ERA+: Norris, Hicks, Brebbia, Poncedeleon, Hudson, Ross, Webb and Shreve.
Pass on Kelly.
October 28, 2018 at 10:02 pm #73407Kelly is streaky, as his stuff screams “top tier pitcher”, but he goes through spells of poor command and gets hammered pretty well when that happens. In the Series though, he has kept the ball in the zone with movement. Plus he has sort of an odd delivery where he short arms the ball, and if you are not used to that the effect is the ball getting on you quicker than you can react.
As for Boston, I thought about listing the Celtics even with the Bruins, but I believe that area is a big hockey hot bed. The Celtics definitely have a tremendous history, but those “original six” hockey teams are extremely popular in their regions.
October 28, 2018 at 10:14 pm #73408On the Richard Justice comment that 40 of 47 teams up 3 to 1 in games have won the World Series, that means the Cardinals own 2 of the 7 collapses. We had the advantage in ’68 and could not close the deal, and again 17 years later. Of course the ’85 Series included the infamous Denkinger blown call, which may have contributed to the downfall.
October 28, 2018 at 10:18 pm #73409Red Sox win the World Series on Dodgers turf, four games to one.
October 28, 2018 at 10:20 pm #73410I should have gone to Vegas. I had this post season nailed, including a “Sox in Five” World Series.
