I thought I would start a thread of all of the comings and goings of the next few days, Cardinals related or not.
Winter Meetings update:
The Cardinals remain willing to move one of their controllable outfielders. After adding 3 starting pitchers, they aren't necessarily committed to acquiring immediate rotation help in return.@MLB @MLBNetwork

Cease would be wise to want to go to Atlanta. Throwing to Murphy would probably be a dream compared to throwing to Contreras. Of course, he doesn’t exactly have any say in it.
That said, Waino is from Georgia too and that worked pretty well for us.

I wonder if Mozeliak tries to pull a trade of O’Neill for a top prospect, rather than an MLB piece. We can always use the prospect pool upgrade. Someone like Drew Thorpe from the Yankees.
I think that could be a possibility Pads. It might offset the draft pick we will lose because of the Gray signing. Or perahaps they trade O’Neill for a MLB bullpen piece.
If you’ve been following the Padres-Yankees negotiations over Soto – Yankees don’t want to move Thorpe at all.
I haven’t listed to it yet, but don’t suppose he mentioned Contreras, or did he?
I know some disagree, but I think O’Neill will be hard to trade and not bring much. I personally think Mo has tried to trade him before and couldn’t do it.
If Mo’s interview statement about the 2024 lineup is not BS, then none of Edman, Donovan, Carlson, Gorman, Winn, Nootbaar, NA or Goldy are trade possibilities. That will limit the possibilities pretty severely.

Looking forward to Flaherty being 13-2 with a 2.55 ERA and then being traded by the Pirates at the deadline this coming year.

I agree with you. I think the best we are going to be offered is a prospect in a team’s 20-30 range, unless they package O’Neill with others to mitigate the risk.
O’Neill is heading into his last year of control. His arb pay will be over $5M. He is a past GG winner, but his dWAR has been negative the last two years and worse in 2023 than 2022. OPS+ 94 and trending down the last two years. So basically, offense and defense both below average, pricey, and a FA after 1 year. Then you have the injury history on top of that.

That’s why I think you get a better return if you package him with either 1-2 relievers or a prospect like Prieto.

If we wanted Edman to be the everyday CF this would be a good guy to have to backup Winn.

If O’Neill had been non-tendered last month, and became a FA, what yrs/$ contract would you expect him to sign this offseason?
2 years for $16-18 million total or 1 year for $10 million.
I expect he’ll have $3-5 million in trade value by the Cards tendering him. That nets a solid reliever maybe in his last year or last 2 years of arbitration. Nothing exciting. But it’s better than losing him for nothing.
We will probably get that trade value and get a guy who has a decent season in our pen. But O’Neill will likely go off and finish 5th in the MVP voting. Such is life these days.
I’m liking the blunt and aggressive Mo this offseason, especially how he has been announcing his game plan as he goes, and following it.
Is this the FO changing their model? They are being very open for business at the meetings, especially with the media. Even locally the FO seems more open and transparent.
We’ve spent 100mil before the first turn. Two short-terms w/options and one three year commitment is a nice blend, but it’s not over-extended.
