In Marilyn’s weekly notebook, the history blurb at the end, she mentioned Wainwright’s two relief appearances in September, 2005. I had totally forgotten about that, always imagining Wainwright’s debut being making the team out of camp in 2006. You never know what you might find out. Thanks Marilyn.

Is there any significance to Mikolas and Matz not being mentioned along with Gray, Contreras and Arenado as players who might be traded to shed payroll?
I doubt there is. Those guys just don’t help shed as much payroll because they are in the final year of their deals and the Cards would have to pay down those deals some in a trade. Gray, Arenado, and Contreras each would be lots more dollars in payroll.
You’re probably saving $8-12 million on Mikolas. Maybe $6-10 million on Matz. Probably $50-$65 million on Gray. Probably around $50 million on Arenado. And somewhere around $50 million on Contreras as well.
Mikolas and Matz can be dealt with through attrition. Gray, Arenado, and Contreras can’t be assuming we don’t want the attrition to last three years.
Another key difference is that the M&M boys do not have no trade protection. On one hand, that would make them relatively easier to move, if it wasn’t for their contracts. But as noted, net cost savings in trading so may be relatively small since the Cards would probably have to pay another team a considerable amount to take them.
So the Cards may just keep them to eat innings in this transition year vs. having to go on the market and hire equally mediocre replacements. If Gray goes too and they let Gibson and Lynn walk (which is quite possible to save money), that would leave them with just Fedde and Pallante plus three openings. They say they aren’t tanking…
