I wonder if we really intended to get him or did we just put in a waiver claim to block another team? Apparently the Padres said “Ok, you can have him.”
Yes, it isn’t a lot of money but it still seems a bit surprising we would need him considering the plethora of young pitchers we have available. My guess is the FO didn’t want someone above us in the standings to get him.

The Padres also let the Brewers take Jordan Lyles off of their hands. It appears that the Padres are trying to clear some 40 man spots as they have several players who they need to protect this winter.

That is true. I didn’t think of that.
Worth noting that the roster point applies to the Cards, too. Ross won’t be blocking anyone this winter.
Ross has had several decent starts along with some poor ones.Well worth trying ……..if he does well it puts less pressure on the kids(Bomber,Poncedeleon) to perform .

I guess Gomber would be sent down? I hope they keep Hudson and Poncedeleon, as they have improved our bullpen greatly.
I remember picking up a middling starter from the Padres back in the day during the season who turned into a pretty decent player. Maybe Ross has some Woody Williams magic in him.
I was thinking about that today, too. Only they did not unload Ray Lankford (Dexter Fowler) this time.
Given his stats, and Cardinals cheapness, I am guessing that he will pitch long relief. It would cost $200k a start, but if one of our starters struggles, he could be brought in, minus, the $200k. Per the option in his contract.
I think they want another veteran. Too much youth and inconsistency in the rotation and pen. Ross has been bad in a couple starts and hasn’t been long in a couple others but I like this move. He’s depth for the roatation and I think he could thrive in the bullpen. I like this guy to help us!
What’s with all of these guys named Ty we are getting? If one of them has a last name of Cobb, then we have something. 🙂

this allows Hudson and POnce and Gomber to stay in the pen and use their abilities to strengthen the pen
I dont want Ross in the pen, at least as the rotation looks right now…i want him to give us 4-6innings and then hand it over to the youthful relievers who are starters and can go a couple innings
there is no doubt Gmober Ponce and Hudson are thriving right now in the pen…and as much as Gant or Ross could work out as pen guys, they already have been starting and why not just give them the hook early if need be instead of hoping they work out in th pen whiel putting the kids in the rotation

more multi inning guys even if Ross starts for those multi innings is a good thing…we can give the hook to guys earlier in games if need be

Gant or Gomber goes down, shouldn’t happen. We already have starters Hudson, Poncedeleon, Mayers(came up as a starter) in the bullpen. Shouldn’t be. F.O. doesn’t have confidence in any of them? Or is the F.O. still trying to pitch that the Cards are in the post-season race?
Ross must be an insurance piece because management feels that C.Martinez, Wacha, Wainwright, Cecil and even Helsley are far from returning. This must be their way of confirming that.
From the comments above there seems to be a split decision on this move. Let’s see if the new surroundings help Ross get back to his all-star form. Sometimes these things work out well… if not it will be another faux pas by management. They are piling up with each vet they bring in.
If they were looking for a starter, why not before the deadline? I hope they won’t be accused of low hanging fruit picking, but I’m fairly confident in saying that the low cost played into it. It usually does at this time of year when Mozeliak and DeWitt are closely watching the waiver list daily.
