The Cardinals should have never traded him…period.
October 21, 2024 at 10:12 pm #270147He was my favorite Redbird player for a couple of seasons, GameCard, but I’m genuinely happy that he was fortunate enough to be able to distance himself from the current collection of inept Cardinal bosses and go to a winning organization that is headed for what should be a fun and entertaining WS. I’m going to really continue to enjoy watching Eddie flash his talent and determination on the big stage of a Dodgers/Yankees WS. Tommy Edman’s a genuine winning baseball player who deserves to play on a genuine winner…Go Dodgers!

ParticipantI have no problem that they traded him. Dealt him to a team that had real post season aspirations and hes doing his part to help them win. Good for him.
October 22, 2024 at 3:27 am #270151I’m delighted for Tommy. He gets to play for a winner and avoids further entanglement with a team that can’t make up its mind.

ParticipantThe only issue with trading him that I had/have is that the return (Fedde) may not be commensurate with Edman’s value, but with the season-long injury, I can’t pretend to know that Edman’s value was higher than what Mozeliak got for him.
Also, I am very happy with Fedde being on the roster for 2025.
Donovan at 2B
Winn at SS
Siani/Scott/Nootbaar at CF
Fedde at SP2>
Edman at 2B/SS/CF
& Kyle Gibson as the SP2 again.October 22, 2024 at 9:31 am #270167I agree with all the comments above but my point was that the Cardinals should not have traded Eddie. I have a big problem with Cardinals trading him. I am happy for Eddie being in the World Series.

Edman is the real deal and Mozeliak can’t see actual talent. Edman is a gamer and the Dodgers got him even though he was injured. It has been tough having a POBO/GM that is blind.
No offence to Fedde but we was robbed…. plain and simple.
October 22, 2024 at 10:46 am #270179I think I agree with Brian regarding Edman. Yes he is a good player but no he probably didn’t have a future here during the rebuild. The question isn’t should they have traded him but should they have traded him for prospects instead of Fedde? In hindisght you could argue the former over the latter but personally I expect Fedde to have a better first half of 2025 than he did the last two months of 2024. He should be prime trade bait in July.

October 22, 2024 at 5:55 pm #270248At some point you would think Dewitt might have some serious questions on evaluations of his own personnel by the front office.
October 22, 2024 at 6:32 pm #270251I 100% don’t agree with Brian.
October 22, 2024 at 6:50 pm #270254Tommy Edman missed most of the regular season, and had a .294 OBP in the regular season games he did play.
His .333 OBP & .810 OPS in the post-season never would have happened with the Cardinals, because the Cardinals would not have made the post-season with his .294 OBP in the regular season.
October 22, 2024 at 6:53 pm #270256As for trading for Fedde or prospects – the Cardinals have all offseason to trade guys like Fedde on expiring deals. They can trade him during the offseason, or wait until the deadline and give Matthews more time to develop.
He put up 5.6 WAR in 2024. I would think he can still be traded for prospects.
October 22, 2024 at 7:10 pm #270259Edman’s ability to be an everyday ss or everyday CF make him very valuable to a team that values defense up the middle and gets plenty of offense elsewhere in the lineup.
October 22, 2024 at 7:29 pm #270260Edman’s ability to be Mickey Hatcher is also very valuable…

jj-cf-stlParticipantThe FO was desperate to put butts in the seats during our “playoff push” PR campaign of 24′.
Edman wasn’t available, butt Fedde was, so the FO continued adding pitching. I don’t see the Edman trade any differently than Bader for Monty.
I agree that hindsight should question the Edman trade return, especially w/Fedde’s current StL results, but Bill didn’t quit on the 24′ team. He was looking to get lucky and make the postseason. That was his model, and now that has changed too.

stlcard25ParticipantWas Fedde that terrible? The 2-5 record doesn’t look great, but 3.72 ERA, FIP a touch over 4…he was as good as anyone on our staff down the stretch.
The offense scored an average of 2.1 runs a game in losses that he started. It’s hard to run up a good record with that sort of support.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMaybe Mo can flip him for some high school kid we’ve never heard of.
October 23, 2024 at 8:41 am #270289Mo wants to open up opportunities for youngsters.

This is a good point. We have to squeeze offense out of every spot in the lineup whereas the Dodgers don’t have to.

Correct. Fedde wasn’t that terrible. Blake Newberry has a good article over at VEB discussing the Edman trade and he makes the same conclusion.
I would hang onto Fedde to give us some innings the first four months of the season then flip him at the deadline assuming we are out of contention.

jj-cf-stlParticipant“servicable”
“mid-rotation”
That’s not terrible, 25 😉October 23, 2024 at 11:30 am #270301We might get the guy who had a good half year and an ok half year. We might get the guy who couldn’t get a job in MLB. Neither would be surprising.
October 23, 2024 at 11:49 am #270302
jj-cf-stlParticipantThat’s the risk with a flash in the pan.
October 23, 2024 at 1:36 pm #270306$7.5M is not really a big risk when you consider what we paid to get Matz.
