And I on the other hand love day games, no matter what day. But now that I am mostly retired, working only here and there, I especially love weekday afternoon contests. I usually get to a few Rockies weekday afternoon games, especially when the opponent is the midwestern club with the birds on the bat uniforms.
Saturday day games are my favorite. Probably because I associate them with the NBC Game of the Week. And a Saturday afternoon Cardinals/Cubs game at Wrigley played in late spring or early summer under God’s sunshine is baseball’s answer to eternal paradise.
Always loved the old NBC Game of the Week. Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek – and for a couple of years Sandy Koufax was also on the broadcast team. Then Joe Garagiola and Tony, then later the incomparable Vin Scully and Garagiola.
In my younger days I used to run up to Chicago to take in those afternoon games at Wrigley. Nothing better. From Wrigley we would take the train south through downtown to Chinatown, and if the Sox were in town, we could take in that game as it was in that part of town. We were usually staying at one of the cheap back alley fleabags that used to be all around that area.
Two games in one day in two different parks – very cool, Bling!!
I still love day baseball – give me a hot day with the beautiful green grass, and the uniforms just look better in the day – a cold beer and a hot dog. Great way to spend a couple of hours, even though it is a bit pricey.
The Rockies must have had Rat in mind when they scheduled their opening series. They opened on a Friday afternoon, then the Saturday game was at night. I thought that was crazy – a Saturday night game in Denver in early April? We can get real nice days around here in April, but we can get cold days too. And evening games in early April are just a bit chilly for baseball. The Rockies should play all weekend home games in the day until about mid-May.
Yes, that Saturday Game of the Week with Gowdy, Garagiola & Kubek were fantastic. As a small tike, if the Cardinals were going to play that coming Saturday, starting Monday, that game was all I could think of for the next 5 days. I recall my heart being terribly fractured on one of these much awaited games when the Cardinals were rained out……might of been against the Mets. I’m not totally sure if I’ve fully recovered from that one yet? And then later on those Saturdays it was Dick Enberg’s “Sports Challenge” for all of we budding trivia buffs. Then Sunday mornings it was always an Andrew Hardy movie, followed by Notre Dame football.
Good memories on the Saturday game of the week. My Grandmother would come watch the games with me most weeks while Mom went shopping.
Oh my, Endberg was a good one. And Lindsey Nelson was a fixture on those ND highlights….moving along to further action….
The Saturday game of the week was must see tv for me as a youngster. That was before we got cable so we were lucky to get two or three channels out of Springfield, Mo with the antenna. Only one game a week of baseball to watch and it was a real treat if it was the Cards. Unfortnuately the game I remember most was the one that hurt the most. June 23, 1984….ugh
Mike, yeah that double dip was great, but unusual as I remember. Back at that time the Cubs and Sox were mostly not in town at the same time. I could be mis remembering though, its been a long time. I did get to see guys like an aging Tom Seaver and Carlton Fisk (and a rather young Tony LaRussa was on the top step, but I don’t remember that).
Checking in on Carlson, it seems like he should be about ready to return. He is hitting OK and taking more walks than Ks, so his eye seems on.
Carp made his first rehab attempt playing first base and went one for two with a double, a sacrifice and a walk. He only played in one of the two SPG games yesterday.
Walker is not hitting much yet in Memphis, so we will see where that goes.
What is the line on the Cards scoring more than 3 runs today?
I think the White Sox are throwing was passes as their ace.
Sox fans have to be fedde up with the product that their team has been trotting out there these past couple years. Well today we’re sending a 2.64 era pitcher to the hill, while the ChiSox will have a 2.60 hurler center stage. Edge Chicago? Nope. Let’s call this one 9-4 Birds with Arenado putting an end to his marathon HR slump by yanking not one…..but two long ones into the cheap seats. And speaking of going back-to-back, I have a few catfish fiddlers left over from last night, so I’ll be din-dining it up again with some fiddlers, plump wild shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, potato salad and 3 Popeye’s apple cinnamon pies.

CF Mike Siani LQuick programming note. No PBP today, as I’ll be attending a wedding in Shorewood. You won’t see any more wedding crashing out of me this spring, as this is the fourth one I’ve attended since the last week in March. But I should be riding high in the PBP saddle tomorrow. Go Cards!
I liked Noot a lot more when he was posting a high OBP and able to hold down the 2 slot. But he can’t swat flies right now and I have no complaints about Contreras in the 2 slot. Meanwhile, Noot should be below Winn along side Gorman.
Meanwhile, Donovan hasn’t been the same since they sent him out to get his .400 OBP approach “fixed” after the 2022 season because he wsn’t hitting for power. As it is, I am not sure his .300 OBP should be leading off. But who else is there? If the org isn’t going to successfully develop middle of the order power bats, then it has to be able to develop top of the order get on base guys. It can’t just develop down in the order hang arounds.
Kind of off topic, but the chatter about all those great times with nationally televised games on the NBC Game of the week made me think of when ABC used to air a nationally televised game that they called “Monday Night Baseball” in the mid to late 70’s. I’m sure some of you recall when Detroit pitcher Mark Fidrych was all the rage across America in 1976 and ABC aired a Tigers/Yankees game on a Monday night in which “The Bird” took a turn in the rotation on June 28, 1976. I clearly remember watching that game. It was really a big deal back then and the TV ratings for that game were not unlike those of a Super Bowl. At any rate, Fidrych didn’t disappoint as he worked a CG 5-1 victory over the Yankees to improve his rookie year W/L record to 8-1. He sure was something else. A genuine gift to baseball and it’s fans.
Fidrych had a remarkable rookie season, but he was pushing his arm beyond what it could tolerate. Once he hurt his shoulder, he was never successful again.
Fidrych should have ate more Catfish Fiddlers. Started his own company. Fidrych’s Fiddlers!
Hard for me to believe that we are in early May and Arenado has one dong and Goldschmidt has two dongs. They aren’t going to hit 35 dongs this year after this pitiful start.
And din-din today will be a Hungry Man’s Turkey TV dinner around first pitch. Along with an ice cold slushy Mt. Dew. And then a big bowl of Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. And then a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar whilst me and Whitey Herdog tune in for the rest of the game. Then afterwards the Orioles and Reds play tonight – another cigar. And then later tonight it’s the Braves and the Dodgers – another cigar. And then real late tonight it will be an episode of Mannix. The fourth and final cigar.

Yeah, he went 19-9 and led the AL in ERA at 2.34 and CG’s with 24 in that ’76 season in which he was AL ROY and came in second behind Palmer in the AL CYA. But yeah, following the arm injury the next season he was effectively all done. He was without question a one-off character. Talked to the baseball and then sometimes had it removed if he thought “it had hits in it”…Haha! You probably also recall he served as a one man ground crew out on the pitcher’s mound. He was like a human earth mover out there. Poor guy died in an accident while performing maintenance underneath his dump truck. I remember reading a small article in the Post when it happened. In any case, I feel fortunate to have seen him pitch a baseball and I’ll always remember how entertaining he was when he worked his trade.
This will be the toughest game of the series. Fedde has really been looking good. He went overseas and added a splitter to his reportroie and has been much better. I’m not sure why more pitchers aren’t using splitters as it is on a per pitch basis one of the most valuable pitches.
Lynn does not look good so far against a really bad lineup. I expect him to pitch more like this the rest of the year.
I don’t understand what Lee’s thinking. It’s right in front of him. It’s like he intentionally ran into an out. That’s good for us.
