RHP Kyle Gibson (1-2, 5.04) vs. LHP Jordan Montgomery (1-0, 1.50)

Also BS South and SouthwestDay off in NYC following on Thursday.
Will be interesting to see Montgomery pitch – I feel like he should be in a Cardinals uniform except ownership is so cheap.
But hey we got an old fat guy that can’t cover first and some other dudes that can eat innings, right?
Well people, as we stand here early on things look dismal. We are the only sub-.500 team in the division, have lost 5 of 6 and are sinking fast.
In this six, if my count is correct we have been outscored 39-15. It’s not like we are only a bloop or two away from winning, we are down right bad.
The only silver lining I see is a lot of those runs were off of Thompson and Pallante; maybe throw Gallegos in there as well. Get someone who can replace those guys and is effective, or have those guys somehow figure it out and maybe there is some hope.
But then you still have the problem on offense. Maybe there is no silver lining. I did not think we would be real good coming into the season, but did not think the rest of the division would be this strong.
It almost seems like getting belted by 13 runs counts for more than just one notch in the loss column. But all we need to do is defeat Montgomery & Co. this afternoon and this series is quickly transformed into a roaring success. Just keep winning series’. Yes it’s early, but this game, in my mind, borders on the “must win” category. We need this win more than Arizona does, plus we’re playing at home. But the Diamondbacks are obviously a better ball club than we presently are. So today’s game is going to be a close one. Let’s call it 4-3 St. Louis with Winn finding the cheap seats with bat in hand for the first time this year.
What’s for din-din tonight? How does breakfast for din-din grab you? Three medium poached eggs over 2 slices of white toast, beef sausage links, 2 waffles and some steaming hot Folgers black silk coffee. Today’s Wednesday, so we know Rat is heading over to his Amish restaurant for a smorgasbord fit for a king. And those crock pot ribs that BicycleMike gobbled down last night sounded like true blue winners. And where has the esteemed Cardinal In France’s din-din revelations been of late? Talk about dandy din-dins!
What if Montgomery and Hicks were in our rotation with Gray. But we would still have Matz and Mikolas.
Yeah, I saw this as a 78-83 win team that would ‘compete’ for a wild card spot in the bloated post season tournament – and they still might.
I too did not foresee that the other NL Central teams would improve as much as they have. I figured the Brewers and the Cubs would be a little down and it was Cincinnati I was worried about. Pirates are about what I figured they’d be.
In our pre-season picks I went about out on a limb and picked Pittsburgh second in the division, behind the hated rivals from Chicago. I thought Milwaukee would be down this year losing their top two starters, but they are better, although the Pirates have cooled them off some.
On the din-din topic, the lovely Mrs. Bike put together a pasta casserole made with Alfredo sauce last night and baked it. We did not have it for din-din last night, but will enjoy it tonight with garlic bread and a big tossed salad. Last night was a second round of the ribs but with Rice-a Roni rather than a baked tater.
Speaking of taters, we need to knock about three out today and show our old buddy Mr. Montgomery that we are down, but not out. Still though, can’t understand why management was not all over brining Monty back in the fold. From what I hear he would have loved coming back. But then management has not done well these last four to five years – too many miscalculations on talent and misuse of guys they have. Again, I think they look too much at non-baseball skill attributes when they make deals and if a guy does not fit their idea of the type of person they want, they send him packing. Just an opinion on that – might be off base but it seems that way to some degree with the whole “get rid of the bad apples” and “bring in leadership” stuff.

Walker is messed up. Slicing across pitches like he’s trying to hook everything.

Gibson has gave us innings. Two good starts and two clunkers.But why King again? Certainly a better option exists. If not, then we’re in worse shape than I imagined. I have the games piped into my office down here in the ole’ salt mines, but a huge seemingly never-ending problem exists. Getting this crew to keep their eyes focused on the ball and not running a ball out here and running a ball out there,…….but running every ground ball, out. Hopefully lightening will strike and I’ll be able to catch some of the action this afternoon.
Walker being demoted is a devastating blow to the Cardinals developmental system, IMO. Maybe others feel differently, but I have completely lost faith in the organization’s ability to identify, acquire and develop talent. This isn’t simply some guy who worked his way through the system under the radar and then stagnated at the top level, a la Paul Dejong. This was our top 5 prospect who had consistently crushed the ball coming into the big leagues. He had a very solid season with the bat last year, and now he’s lost. It’s ridiculous. Has any hitting prospect actually improved upon their first full year in the last ten years? It’s one after another of a good first year and then slow or fast descent to being unplayable.
And Thompson is another first round pick to flame out. It’s hard to imagine the team turning around unless the entire front office is removed.
I hope the homestand stomp-count doesn’t reach 3 today.

Because if you hit in the Texas League you can hit in MLB. Known fact. Been doing it wrong for 100 years.
Pretty sparse crowd on this lovely hump day afternoon. Speaking of “hump”, let’s see if we can get over a pretty big one facing us today. The Diamondbacks, after loading the bases with no 1st inning outs, manage to only scratch out one. That’s a win for us. If you get the bases juiced with no outs and come away with fewer than 2 runs, you can’t help but feel disappointed.
Walker had a 114 OPS+ last year…not sure that adding a year of him crushing AAA pitching would have helped all that much. Fact is, his pattern has become the absolute norm for almost every hitting prospect for about 10 years now…start out well and then fade immediately after.

I really felt like our young hitters would show improvement this year. Other than Winn, and a hot start by Herrera that hasn’t been the case.
Took a ride on the metro with my lovely frau to the ballpark today to see our team in action. “Action” is a little strong, not too much enthusiasm. Most of our hitters (Gorman, Noot, Herrera, Siani) seem totally outmatched by Montgomery. Gibson started well, but looking tired in the 5th. Stands are no more than half full maybe closer to a third, and quiet. Ticket prices up too. I paid $14 in service fees on top of the ticket price for an on line purchase all electronic. Now off to get a $10 hot dog. Need some runs!
