I know this is off-topic, but I don’t want to start a new thread for a dumb question.
Does the continuous barrage of kitschy promotions by the Cardinals actually suck significant numbers of fans to the park or result in serious revenue? Are there lots of baseball fans out there who say, “Hey let’s go to the ball game today so we can get one of those cool bubbleheads or a couple of ugly plastic mugs and eat an eight dollar hot dog?”
The #STLCards will start LHP Steven Matz vs. the #Brewers on Tuesday, manager Oli Marmol said. RHP Sonny Gray will then start in Wednesday’s Game 3 in Milwaukee.
The goal is to get RHP Erick Fedde an extra day of rest, Marmol said. Fedde will start Friday vs. the #Mariners.

Some of those promotions sound a bit racy and may actually draw a few fans who are hoping for a little extra action to augment their humdrum everyday activities. One in particular that comes to mind is “Adult Cardinal T-Shirt Night”…Sounds like fun. Next thing you know, they’ll be promoting an “Adult Hello Kitty Night”…
Probably depends on the promotion. My cousin lives in the Dallas area and the Rangers did a replica Josh Jung World Series ring promotion, and he got tickets for that so he and his wife could get one of those. He said they are pretty cool too, and fairly authentic and not cheap plastic replicas.
When I see the promotions, there are some that if I was in the area I would probably be interested in getting. Like that Cardinals-Blues sweatshirt I think it was – that looked cool and if I was around there I might see about getting out to the park for it. Others not so much.
I happened to see an advertisement for a Sept. 10 game vs. the Reds that featured a photo of a Chris Carpenter bobblehead, but the ad mentioned you had to purchase something termed as a special, “Budweiser Bash Theme Ticket.” I wouldn’t mind having one of those Carpenter bobbleheads although the one featured in the photo didn’t look anywhere near as menacing as the former Cardinal RH’ed starting pitcher. At any rate, I’d like one with a bit more of a contemptuous sneer…
I was telling a younger guy at work about how when my brother and I were kids we used to have a bunch of youth size Louisville sluggers we got at the bat give away promo each year. His response: they don’t let kids use wooden bats anymore, they might get hurt.
In elementary and junior high school we used to play tackle football at recess at school.
Imagine the lawsuits today, lol
People have gotten really, really soft.
Those bats were a nice promo. The old mitts they used gave away also weren’t too bad for a freebie. They’d unravel and fall apart after a year or two, but were a decent spare to keep around in case you needed to loan it to someone who happened to show up without a mitt for some Indian Ball.

Some people never learn Rat. Small sample sizes. O’Brien might be one of our best relievers next year. We don’t know. Carlson won himself a ticket out of town based on multiple years performance. He didn’t become Mookie Betts overnight because he went to Tampa.
I guess if Matz can stay healthy he will get 4-5 starts as we wind down the season and the Cardinals will then decide his roll for next year.

No matter how he does, I cannot believe that they are considering counting on him as one of next year’s starters. We have already seen that movie and we know how it ends.
My guess is they bring Gibson back and go with ‘6’ starters, just assuming Matz will get hurt before April.
They might off Gibson and go with Pallante as #5 and a laundry list guy 6 figuring the system has to be able to produce a depth starter in two years of trying especially with all the extra guys Mo traded for.
I will be very disappointed if we bring back Lynn or Gibson. At some point, we have to develop at least a #5 SP. It is hard to do that though when you are paying a glut of pitchers each $12-20 million each a year to be #5s taking up your whole rotation. We already have a “full” rotation on paper for 25. 1 of the 5 will be injured at least, so maybe that 5th spot can go to Mathews, McGreevy, or Graceffo. We will actually have decent depth with our pitching prospects showing they are ready for a trial run.

RomIs that a rotation that can compete? Probably not, so I view 25 as a growing year. It is the dead weight and big contracts of guys like Mikolas and Matz that are really holding it back. Get their contracts off the books, have an internal #4 or #5, and cross our fingers one of Mathews, Hence, Hjerpe, or Roby can be a #3 or better by 26 (ordered by my confidence with Mathews being a big step above).

Starter: ERA 5.86, WHIP 1.618, BA Against .294.
Reliever: ERA 4.06. WHIP 1.136, BA Against .228.Why?
I’d rather shoot for the moon and fail than just getting a mediocre RP. If it works out, it is great for the franchise. If not, we don’t lose a whole lot as I don’t see him being a late inning RP with his stuff.
I’ll admit I am maybe being hopelessly optimistic with Liberatore. Watching him pitch, he has the repertoire of a SP and not of a RP. I think a couple of adjustments and he can turn into a solid #4 (as a LHP which we need). The biggest thing for him to improve is controlling things when something goes wrong. One mistake and he lets it get him off the rails and it all goes downhill. Hopefully something he will mature out of some. He never will be a bulldog like Chris Carpenter though.

They have been shooting for the moon for three years and it hasn’t worked. At some point we have to be realistic about it and say that he can be a decent reliever.
They will end up getting nothing out of Liberatore. Same with Thompson. Looks like same with Hence. None of them are going to be a rotation fixture but the org refuses to accept reality and focus 100% on a role that is possible.
