Also Bally Sports South/Southwest ExtraApril 9, 2024 at 5:25 pm #247279Hoping the rain stays away tomorrow. I’m trying to go to this game while in St. Louis on business.
April 9, 2024 at 9:43 pm #247403Pen might be a little thin tomorrow.
April 9, 2024 at 11:38 pm #247405ZTR, I was thinking the same earlier.
I’d say no chance Helsley goes 3 straight and Jojo pitched a lot tonight, both looked absolutely great though.
I’ll just root for a Lynn CG shutout.
April 10, 2024 at 9:15 am #247423Probably a 4-man bullpen today – assuming the game gets played. I could see them pressing Kittredge for an inning if needed too if they had to so he would make 5. But with Zach Thompson available, that shouldn’t be an issue. We just need his innings to be somewhat of quality. Also there’s Pallante, Fernandez, and Gallegos.
I love the bullpen so far. And there’s a possibility that Middleton and O’Brien could also be pretty good. That’s a lot of trustworthy arms available. The last 1-2 spots might be questionable, but aren’t they always? You really need 6 reliable relievers with ERAs that are sub 3.50 (with maybe 3 of those around 2.50 or less) and we may have that this season.
April 10, 2024 at 9:22 am #247424I believe Thompson sticks in the bullpen for one full lap of the rotation through Gray’s next start. Then, it will be time to send him down and keep him stretched out. Until then, he can provide insurance innings. Ideally, Middleton would be ready by then, but that’s probably not likely so that would mean Robertson gets the call because King won’t have been down long enough. Or maybe they take Kloffenstein to keep someone who is stretched out for long relief and then Thompson slots into the rotation in that spot at Memphis.
Nootbaar should take Pages place when he gets activated Friday. I assume (and hope) he’ll be playing LF. At a minimum, he improves the OF defense there and provides a higher OBP. He could fit into the 2-hole if Ollie is willing to monkey with Goldschmidt’s spot and push the mashers who don’t mash down a spot.

jj-cf-stlParticipantJ, Libby looks to be growing into one of the six, in Oli’s usage. He and JoJo are taking the reps vs tough lefties.
Your scenario for Thompson optioned down and a minors guy up as long relief, also fits well if Libby becomes a one inning matchup guy.
April 10, 2024 at 10:27 am #247427A one inning guy has to come in throwing strikes. If he takes an inning to settle in, it doesn’t work.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAgree BB, overall. Libby is not established as such, and the failure rate trying to climb the reliever ladder is very real.
We have a handful of unestablished relievers, active. I’m expecting growing pains results from them over the season. It’s what rebuilding teams do, give guys a chance. The roster was built that way, by choice this winter.
April 10, 2024 at 10:43 am #247431Something to watch with Lynn today and I in no way am trying to be flippant. I noticed it in the games on tv that Lynn pitched last year and again this season. Lynn has an obvious “Tell”. It’s pretty normal for Lance to grab at his crotch area once an inning, but when he does it multiple times, it’s a sure sign that he’s nearly gassed. Being in attendance would give one a Bird’s eye(pun somewhat intended) view on how Lance is feeling regarding this issue. I think TexasCard will be at the game today and maybe can give us a report. Wish I could pry my way out of the salt mines today to take in this all important ballgame, but on certain days the walls would cave in if I were absent…..and unfortunately this is shaping up to be one of those days. Go Birds!
April 10, 2024 at 10:53 am #247432I’ll miss this game. I am going to go and pay my property taxes down at the courthouse. Then stop at the drug store and get some Apple Cider Vinegar pills or liquid. Then stop at the Gasthof, the Amish restaurant, for my late lunch. Fried chicken, fish, mashed potatoes/gravy, green beans, noodles, dressing, cherry cobbler, sweet ice tea, and cherry cobbler for dessert. Then afterwards have a 7×50 Palma Real Presidente cigar out on the front porch area.
I see Goldschmidt is not in the lineup. Maybe a day off will help him. Perhaps the old stomping grounds down in Arizona will also help him this weekend. The way it is now – HE IS PLAYING HIMSELF OUT OF ST. LOUIS AT THE TRADE DEADLINE.
However, Goldy is a 5/10 player, right?

jj-cf-stlParticipantYes
April 10, 2024 at 11:10 am #247435Goldschmidt probably takes a trade to a contender. No point him waiting on the Cardinals.
April 10, 2024 at 11:19 am #247436If Goldy and Arenado would wake up we would be a contender.
April 10, 2024 at 11:26 am #247437Is Victor Scott the only CF this team has? Woof

Maybe we should try Burly?
April 10, 2024 at 12:02 pm #247439Colhusker – Siani is basically Scott’s equal as a CF option. Both have incredible defense. Both can steal bases well (some advantage here to Scott). And both can’t hit in MLB. Although Siani will walk at an 8-10% clip so he has an advantage there.
Scott’s real advantage is that he’s younger and still has quite a bit of time to advance as a hitter.
April 10, 2024 at 12:07 pm #247440KCB – there’s also Pages. He might be pretty good at least in a 5X5 area around himself.
April 10, 2024 at 12:23 pm #247441
stlcard25ParticipantOuch. You can’t be giving away outs and runs. Error on Scott on the fly ball, 1-0 Phillies.
April 10, 2024 at 12:23 pm #247442Siani will turn 25 in July. His best OPS at any level was in 2018 where at AA for most of a season he ran a .755. That was largely built on a high walk rate, although he did hit 12 homers. That was Siani’s age 22/23 season. That’s probably his ceiling in the Majors and he might never get there.
In comparison, Scott ran a .823 OPS in half a season at AA last year. He was a little lower than that for his other half season at High A. That was his age 22 season. He still has more runway. But it’s hard to learn for him while he’s mostly overmatched so it would be better for the Cards to have him in the Minors. But they need 2 CF’s and they want Victor playing every day wherever he is.
April 10, 2024 at 12:33 pm #247443I’m less than 20 miles from the ballpark and just got done taking the trash and recycle containers back around to side of the garage and it’s pretty sloppy out there. I’ll be a little surprised if they get this game in.
April 10, 2024 at 12:43 pm #247444Haha…LL’s shaking his head like a wet dog.
April 10, 2024 at 12:44 pm #247445Attendance probably 2500.
