He hits a lot of homers and takes a lot of walks. There’s not a lot of other “good” to his game. He’s probably a little better fielder than you might expect by looking at him. But I wouldn’t call him good there.
Yep, Greg Mathews took 32 turns and went 11-11 as a member of the ’87 NL Pennant winning Redbird rotation that included two other lefties named Magrane and Tudor. Tudor only took 16 turns that season as a result of a broken leg suffered while sitting in the dugout and being bulldozed by Met’s catcher Barry Lyons after Lyons bulldozed into the Redbird dugout in an attempt to get a putout on a foul ball. Rickey Horton also took 6 turns in the rotation which totaled 4 Redbird lefties who worked in the rotation that season. The primary two RH’ed SP’ers for the Cardinals that season were Bob Forsch and Danny Cox. Mathews spent 4 seasons as a Cardinal and was done in by arm problems. His career ended with the Phillies in ’92.

I remember Greg Mathews as a player, but also met him in 1999, I think it was. He was running a baseball clinic for youngsters that I had my son in.
As part of it, Greg gave the group a tour of Busch stadium. We got to go to the field, in the dugout, in the KMOX booth, etc. He told the kids it was very important they stay off the grass. He said he had a good relationship with the Cardinals that enabled him to do these tours and he didn’t want anybody to blow that, lol. All the kids and dads were good that day and followed his orders.
Staying off the grass was some sound advice for those kids. Although it’s now legal in Missouri, long ago and far away I tried it a couple of times and quickly came to the conclusion that I was plenty dumb enough without it…Haha!
Thought this appeared to be a win going in. Pallante had a good start.
I know it’s been a couple games but I think I may like Baker and Carpenter piggybacking the DH role. It works for now or until go against a team that likes to run. Then Wil Con steps in. Maybe then Baker gets a little run at first for PG. Idk.

Rat has been strangely silent since yesterday……but I’m sure it has nothing to do with his Jasper football squad getting thumped by Evansville. When predicting games, picking winners are a piece of cake. But getting the exact scores correct are obviously a bit more challenging. That’s where I dropped the ball yesterday. Yesterday morning on this very thread I predicted Evansville to drill Jasper by the score of 38-10. Well, Evansville did indeed maul Jasper, but it was by the score of 37-6 and not 38-10. And I forecasted our Cardinals to upend the Twins by the score of 6-4. As we all know we did indeed get the better of Minnesota, but it was by the score of 6-1 and not 6-4. Obviously I can call these game scores better and that I shall do.
Well I called it – a 6-1 loss to start this dismal series. Wait, you say we won 6-1? Must be a misprint, either that or the old “even a blind squirrel finds an acorn now and then” routine.
…just watched the condensed game. I don’t think we were playing the real Twins. That opponent had some weird blue and yellow uniforms on. The Twins feature a classic red and blue look with pinstripes at home, and the iconic interlocking “TC” on their hats. Nice of them to give us the first game against their minor league club. Guess they felt sorry for us and wanted to give us one game for the Cardinal fans that traveled to the great upper Midwest.
Nice win last night…the pieces are individually not doing too terribly, but the lack of a thumper is killing the offense right now. I don’t think Goldy has it in him to get hot for a month and a half, but Arenado seems to moving past whatever was ailing him earlier in the year. It’s not over, but the playoffs are unlikely. Might as well play for pride.

Why is the conversation always limited to Goldy and Arenado? Contreras leads the team in OSP and SLG. He led in OPS last year too, and was second in SLG. There are three guys we should be looking at. Its too bad Gorman and Walker don’t make it five guys.
The focus is rightfully on the two top veterans who have not been contributing to their prior levels, rather than the one who is already having a standout season. Contreras has a career best 136 OPS+ this season compared to his career mark of 117. No other Cardinal is better than 112 in 2024.
If Contreras can continue to have a career season, that would be great. But it is pretty clear he cannot carry the offense alone. Hence the focus on the others who also need to step up.
If the 2 veteran leaders and highest paid players were even at 2023 level performance with the team we have put together. We’d likely be sitting a lot better in the playoffs picture I have no doubt. Oh and naturally people would be pissing and moaning that they’ve fallen off a cliff.
Naturally I can’t prove any of that to be true and a couple of gems on here would point that out.
