ESPN Gamecast says that was a knuckle curve that Pallante threw to get the bases loaded strike out in the 2nd. It shows he’s been using it a lot so far.
I’m watching it. I know I said I was done watching for the year. But I at least get all the Apple TV games. Pallante actually doing well even if the results don’t look it. Poor contact on a few infield singles and a few other grounders where they just hit it where our infielders weren’t. Also, several really close pitches that didn’t go his way. Contreras not really helping him in that regard. The deathball does look tough. Several swings and misses. Reminds me of a splitter.
Ok. That last one wasn’t a good pitch. Lucky it was just a single.
Contreras is so bad at catching Pallante. He makes the close pitches not close by the way he stabs at them.
Lin had another good start tonightfor Palm Beach. In his last 30 innings over 5 starts, he’s allowed 3 earned runs.
He’s often victimized by seemingly harmless bouncers that somehow bleed through the IF. The epitome was Segura’s off balance swing that produced the weak GB that snuck by Edman in the horrific 9th inning of game 1 of the ’22 NLWC. He induced Segura to do precisely what the Redbirds needed which was a GB for a possible GIDP, but fortune just wasn’t on the Cardinal’s side that game. The Redbird manager made the baseball gypsies angry with his multiple silly and insane moves during that game and the Cardinals have been cursed ever since that fateful day…
And there went Mathews perfect game, no hitter, and shutout as he doesn’t get a borderline called 3rd strike and then gives up a homer on a pitch down the middle.
Probably finished for the night. 7 innings, 12 K’s, no walks, 1 hit/run.
McGreevey with 6 scoreless innings as well tonight. Not sure if he’ll continue or not. 4 hits allowed.
Palm Beach now 30 games over .500. If Springfield holds on to win their game, they’ll be 20 games over.

Mathews back out for the 8th. He throws 6 strikes to the 2nd hitter in the inning, but 4 are called balls for his first walk.
7 2/3 is his final count. 2 hits and a walk to go with12 K’s.
I assume he’s done just because the pitch count is in that range. But he’s still throwing well so maybe not.
If the Cardinals can hang on they’ll really help out their cross state KC team as the Royals lead the Phillies 7-2 after 6 full. Anyone remember Greg or T.J. Mathews?
Boneheaded play by Pham to get picked off 3rd there. I thought it was weird that Ollie replaced Burleson with Pham anyway. Is Pham really that much faster or a better baserunner? Maybe slightly. But slightly feels like a stretch to use up a player.
Yes, Pham is a better baserunner and better in left field, too, but the decision looked bad when Pham was caught straying off third base.
I think the base running thing is extremely questionable. Burleson isn’t a bad base runner. He’s actually pretty good. Pham is probably faster, but I trust Burly. I do agree that Pham is the better fielder. Maybe it was just about getting the defensive replacement.
