At this point I really don’t think it matters even if we sweep the Brewers. Just too far behind…

I’d say that’s exactly right. They’re buried at double digits plus one and it’s approaching Sept…”I’ll tell you that!”

The FO, and by extension, ownership, has normalized mediocrity. The stated goal is to compete, not necessarily to win the division. So how far behind the Brewers we are doesn’t matter, not to Mo and Bill, I mean. The Braves won, so we are now 5 games out of the 3rd WC, and we have to catch and pass three teams. The Giants, Mets and Braves. Whether you want to call that competitive is a matter of opinion. Next year doesn’t look like it will be any better. We are looking at perpetual mediocrity, as far as I can tell. I always felt sorry for fans of teams like that.

    Bling,
I’ve said the same thing. About how we are looking at a run of a few bad years. It’s not any fun to think about that either.

Our only hope is that several of the players that we’ve been counting on for the last 2-3 years finally start to play well. And I mean FINALLY! Players such as:

    Nootbaar
    Walker
    Gorman
    Scott
    Burleson (keeps it going)
    Graceffo
    McGreevey
    Hence
    Liberatore

Well, I wouldn’t characterize them as mediocre. Last season was placed in the books at 20 games below even and this season currently sits at 2 under and has more than a decent chance of becoming a lot worse before it’s conclusion. I’d also say that 11 off the pace in the division is nowhere near competitive, and as you mentioned, there are plenty of teams ahead of them that are vying for second rate NIT status. It’s my view that they’re not even in the class of respectability much less mediocre or competitive.

TD I agree that while mediocre is the goal, they fell well short of it these last two years.

Some argue that we are less bad this year than last, but it doesn’t matter. Stinking like week old road kill instead of two week old road kill doesn’t matter.

Last season on Aug. 18th they were 12 off the pace in the NLC. So yeah, they’re a little less bad this year than last. So far…

For reference, the Cardinals last swept a series two months ago over the Giants. They have played 16 series since then and went 22-26.

Pretending just lets the next 40 games play out. We’ll see what the FO does.

I expect keeping the contracts on the field as long as possible. Keep the PT and counting stats high for reflections sake, while holding down the service time of anyone demoted.

It’s not like anyone is knocking the door down, but still, rebuilds audition after they are out of it. The pretending cycle throws a wrench into that.

Too bad Walker hit the ground like a bag of wet cement. Nothing is going right for Our Mo.

Mo should do the honorable thing and resign. Now.

He’s set financially so no tears for him. Just go and don’t let the door hit you in the a**.

The NLC standings are irrelevant. There is no need worrying about that any longer. The wild card standings are the only game in town and they just bought a one way ticket out.

And by the way the “tough” NLC only has one team with a winning record currently although I suspect the Cubs will join the ranks of a winning record soon due to their ongoing tour against last place teams.

And I agree that next year doesn’t look much better since the Cardinals seem to inexplicably be considering bringing back the same roster as this year.

Wild card, wild card, wild card. I’m sick of talking about it, sick of reading about it, Sick of the concept. Remember the days when baseball was about winning?

With three divisions I didn’t mind ONE Wild Card spot for the best 2nd place team to get to 4 teams ‘in’ in each league.

If they expand to 4 – 4 team divisions in each league then we could back to only division winners advancing.

They will never do that though so we are stuck with sub .500 teams being ‘in the race’.

It’s all about and ONLY about the $$$$$.

The division hasn’t really been a goal IMO. We got close but never thought we could overtake the Brewers. The wildcard was always the goal for me and that is slowly slipping due to a couple teams unreal play since the break.

Remember when the Cardinals won the division and the world series with 83 wins. I’m sure some of you would be sick of the divisions and want to eliminate them if they won it that way every year. Oh and the Diamondbacks say hello with a minus run differential and 84 wins.

Yeah it’s about money and exposure! That’s the whole point. It gives hope to fanbases who don’t normally have it and keeps them engaged. Although I think half of the fans usually put focus towards football about September. So I think that is halfway bull.

I hear you, CIF, but I want to know if you’re also tired? Asking for Rat.

I wonder if in their private moments, do Bill and Mo ever admit to each other that they suck at this MLB team-building thing.

If the owners had their way there way there would be 3 division winners and 12 wild cards for each league.

Everyone gets a trophy and keep the turnstiles turning!

So tonight we no longer have Crawford and have sent Walker back to AAA. Baker is back with the big team and Carpenter is off the IL.

I sense a big time winning streak coming…….

The Cardinals no longer feel like there’s a need for a failsafe at SS simply because they no longer feel like they have a chance to qualify for postseason baseball. They’ve pack it in at 124 games.

Yeah, I think they feel if Winn were to get hurt then they have no chance anyway, so why hang on to a backup.

Too bad for Walker. Calling him up and then playing him now and then was a big misfire. This front office has really fallen off the deep end the last few years. I can’t see Mo sticking around for his final year. I think Bloom will be the guy sometime soon after the regular season ends. And of course Bloom will fire Ollie and possibly much of the staff, although I hope Stubby sticks around.
