You don’t need a fancy word like analytics to figure out that this team can’t hit anyone.

LACF, why Walker then? Because Carlson used to get those starts and he was an outfielder? Pham is too.
Carp wasn’t logging outfield time, why not Baker? He evens out the bench too, as a RHB.

Pagan will act as a opener, and Oli chose the best 9 bats he has w/the best staggered lineup he can. Walker sits because he can’t crack the lineup.

That’s fine JJ. I would have left Walker in aaa in the first place. But bringing him up and not playing him is asinine.

Baker is rolling along w/a 4digit ops for 2 seasons now vs lefties. ???

Yeah, if the priority is optimized lineups over player development, Baker makes more sense to bring up. You could have both, as Walker would be getting his everyday work in and Baker, with better AAA stats, could play against lefties.

This management group makes decisions to where you wonder if they even know their own personnel.

Given the problems Walker has had with ML pitching, it is absurd to expect him to sit half the time and then have his timing and his eye and his mechanics tuned and perform when he does get on the field. He was getting some forward momentum finally in Memphis which will now screech to a halt and start rolling backwards.

It is an example of that fantasy ball mentality where players consist of a collection of zeros and ones and anything which cannot be qualified is excluded from the calculations. It is no wonder everyone fizzles. How many lineups has there been in the last 10 games? How many defensive alignments in the last 10 games. There is no continuity and no one can get in a groove. But, as I said, those things don’t exist, because the players are zeros and ones.

It makes me wonder if there is a disconnect between those who set the roster and the guy who writes the lineup card. Despite what some think, they are not one and the same.

Baker had a small sample at mlb too, and didn’t do as well vs lefties as Walker did.

Maybe they are trusting Walkers likelyhood to succeed at mlb over Bakers chances, which brings me to another question.

Is there a better option than Walker on the 40man for this vs LHP bench role? Or maybe it is not misusing the data, and they simply went with what they believe is the best option to succeed?

I am thinking of when Mo explained that the output of the analytics department informs game prep and in game decisions.

In my view, last season saw only two position players on the entire roster who were entirely aware of what roll they were expected to fulfill. This season has reduced the number to zero. This roster is not at all unlike a hybrid blend of a Chinese fire drill and a barrel of monkeys. It’s a little like watching slapstick or following the old vaudeville circuit at times and simply isn’t designed or constructed to be taken seriously. How could you?

Of course, the analytics department informs game prep and in-game situations. So do scouting reports and coaches opinion. Players get input, coaches get input, the manager gets input. Ultimately, the manager writes the names on the card. (Well, not really. He tells the bench coach, who mans the pen. At least that is the way it used to be.)

Man the Reds are just pounding us this series. 14-2 total runs as of right now. This is really like the ‘70s with us playing the Big Red Machine.

This next week will be telling. We might be pretty well out of the hunt after the upcoming home stand.
