Sorry you didn’t get to see a win GACard. That was the one the exspurts said we were gonna win
October 5, 2019 at 9:35 am #110286This team does not deserve to have a starter like Jack Flaherty with the absolute GARBAGE run support he gets, what a joke…
October 5, 2019 at 9:47 am #110287The good part is getting a split in the road games. The bad part of course is getting shutout, but sometimes you have to tip your hat to the opponent and Folty was really on his game.
There was an interesting stat the Cardinal radio crew gave yesterday – Dansby Swanson was up with runners on first and third, and Ricky Horton said he had the worst batting average in baseball this year with runners in scoring position, something like .180 (don’t recall the exact number). I thought that Bader was a lot worse than that. Seems like he had gone some incredible numbers of ABs without even getting a run home from third with less than two out, much less a hit.
Anyway, talking about Harry, I am good with him playing center field for now as the middle defense is valuable. But next Spring, depending on personnel, I would be giving a lot of reps to O’Neill and Arozerena as potential center fielders. Curt Flood started his career as a good-field-no-hit player, but then developed into a very good offensive player around his third big league season. He had hit well in the minors, so he just needed some adjustment to the next level. Bader hit well in the minors, and started his career as a decent hitter but has regressed. He still seems to struggle at pitch recognition, including location. Maybe he will tear it up in the Spring and keep the job, but you wonder if he will go the Allen Craig route.

ParticipantThe game was pretty much a waste of three hours if you are a Cards fan.
Story line: “Foltynewicz pitches the game of his life”. These performances are almost common in play-off games and become something to write about. And who thought that we would get shut out… nobody… except maybe Flaherty.
Folty turned the Cardinals into canaries… you have all witnessed the Card’s offence taking the night off–ZZZZZ. Folty was good, period.
What’s that stat about whoever wins game 2, wins the series? It happens in NHL too.

Well I can’t totally disagree with you but how short our memories are. It was only 6 days ago that he got 9 runs of support in beating the Cubs. He allowed them none. But even Jacko said it was two pitches that made the difference and he threw both of them including a dinger to a guy that has hurt us before wearing a Reds uniform. Cards take two at Busch and move on to LA.
October 5, 2019 at 10:33 am #110295I looked it up. This season, Bader batted .213 with runners in scoring position, which is actually slightly “better” than his overall .205 BA.
However, it is OBP that tells the story. In a surprise, Bader was far more inclined to take a walk with RISP. His OBP then is .419 (24 BB vs. 16 H) vs. just .314 overall (which includes the RISP results) and a miserable .280 OBP with the bases empty. That is a very significant difference.
Seems like Bader was much better continuing a rally (by walking) than starting one.
Update: Twitter speculation (which makes some sense) is that Bader likely sees fewer breaking pitches down and away when runners in scoring position. Of course, the conclusion is to always throw him breaking stuff no matter the situation, which is what is happening in the post-season.

According to the TBS crew, the team that wins game 1 of a division playoff series wins the series 70 percent of the time (or something close to that).
October 5, 2019 at 12:20 pm #110302I tell you what, I would rather have Bader up with RISP than DeJong. DeJong is horrible in those situations. He pads his stats in non clutch situations then chokes when it counts. Sorry, I just feel he is very over rated.
