All games in the postseason are must wins.
Flaherty coming apart a bit.
October 4, 2019 at 5:49 pm #110227Okay Redbirds … you need to score some runs here!
October 4, 2019 at 5:55 pm #110228How does it compute in Shildt’s mind that Bader should bat in the 8th after he looked so ridiculous the first two times?

Yeah it’s not like were in a 3-2 game here and need his defense .
This team just wants to get back home.
October 4, 2019 at 6:01 pm #110232Watching DeJong and Bader whiff at the breaking pitches was just plain embarrassing.
October 4, 2019 at 6:02 pm #110233Does anyone know what Flares era is in his losses and his run support in those games.
It’s a real shame that for all he has given, the one outing he struggles, this pathetic offense can’t back him up with some runs against a less than average pitcher.October 4, 2019 at 6:02 pm #110234I know my opinion does not count. However, I believe Bader has played himself into the role of late inning defensive replacement.
I recognize he is hitting in the eight hole. However, he is struggling to even put the ball n play. His plate discipline has regressed over the past three weeks. I do not believe the Cards can afford to give him three to four plate appearances per game.
Having said this …. I exoect him to start every game through the end of this season.
October 4, 2019 at 6:06 pm #110239I echo your opinion 1964cards. Baders lack of offense trumps his defensive plays. At best he is a late inning defensive replacement when we have a lead
October 4, 2019 at 6:09 pm #1102403 outs to get 3 runs or it’s tied heading back to Stl.
October 4, 2019 at 6:09 pm #110242Hoping the Cards can get to Melancon again!
October 4, 2019 at 6:17 pm #110245Singles by Goldy and Ozuna with Yadi up!
October 4, 2019 at 6:20 pm #110246Dave asked:

I looked at some of his splits here.
October 4, 2019 at 6:22 pm #110247Last chance. Will Kolten try to hit a three-run homer?
October 4, 2019 at 6:25 pm #110248Tough loss. Need to get them Sunday in St Louis.
October 4, 2019 at 6:30 pm #110249They stunk today, looked uninspired. Didn’t play clean yesterday. So, gotta feel good about leaving Atlanta tied. Hopefully the energy rises a bit Sunday.
October 4, 2019 at 6:32 pm #110253The flaccid Cardinal offense strikes again. Don’t they know that a ball in the dirt is usually not a strike?
October 4, 2019 at 6:35 pm #110254Oh well, alot of goose eggs on that score line. 0 runs on 6 hits by Goldy, Ozuna, Molina and JMart. Everybodyelse gets a spanking. Drama in the 9th when our bats threatened to score! If I’m Flaherty I’m gettin’ disappointed. Back to home. Hope our bats wake back up. May need to soak them in hot sauce.
October 4, 2019 at 6:42 pm #110255Dave, in the 8 losses suffered by Flaherty during the regular season, his ERA was 5.52. The Cardinals scored a total of 10 runs in those 8 games. In 4 of the games, the Cardinals did not score a single run.
Flaherty started 33 games and the Cardinals record was 17-16 in those 33 starts. The Cardinals scored 32 runs in those 16 loses. In the 11 games that Flaherty got the win, his ERA was 1.11. In the 14 games that he got no decision, his ERA was 2.72. In 7 of those 14 games, he allowed only 0 or 1 run while he was piching. The team record was 2-5 in those 7 games.
October 4, 2019 at 6:59 pm #110257We played like we were content with a split. If we were going to split, I would have preferred to lose the first game because I think that’s what most fans thought if were going to win 1 game in Atlanta it’ll be the 2nd game so after we won the first and Flare pitching in the 2nd, most felt it was a sure thing for a 2-0 lead but no matter who is pitching or how dominant they are, there’s always one factor that keeps the other team in the game and that’s our pathetic offense. We have hitters who have no discipline at the plate and are always trying to pull the ball and hit it out of the stadium no matter the count. This wasn’t a great performance by Flare based on what Cardinal fans have been accustomed to over the last couple months, heck it wasn’t even a good performance because we’ve been so spoiled to where if Flare gives up more than a run, he’s had an off night but he pitched well enough to keep us in the game and give us a chance until giving up that 2 run knock in the 7th. I would have almost preferred to lose something like 8-6, then at least way I could say Flare just didn’t have it tonight as the case with every MLB pitcher but I could find comfort in the fact that our offense produced but as we head to game 3, I am not sure if we can win both and nothing against Waino or DH because I am confident they’ll do their job but will our offense do theirs and most importantly can they do it for 2 games in a row?
October 4, 2019 at 7:02 pm #110258Thank you Forsch31 for that stat.
October 4, 2019 at 7:30 pm #110260Then don’t swing.
#stlcards were clearly frustrated with the number of fastballs – or lack thereof – that they saw from Foltynewicz today. Harrison Bader said he saw zero. Kolten Wong said he saw one. Pitch Wong hit to the track was a slider.

October 4, 2019 at 7:50 pm #110262Everyone knows how this team rolls offensively. I don’t feel certain players will see the light and just figure things out. It will likely be the death of this team.
Fowler is 8 for his last 60 ish AB’s. Bader has regressed at the plate. IMO Lane Thomas would’ve been a big help as the 4th OF/platoon for Bader and Fowler over Arezorena. It’s a shame he got injured but that is just one of many issues with the offense.
The question remains who replaces Ozuna’s production and his overrated defense on this club. Going to be hard to find a guy within the organization who can give us near 100 RBI production because he was close to that if not for the hand injury. I feel this team might need to make a couple moves in the offseason and get at least an impact bat for the lineup and jettison a couple of people from it’s current everyday lineup.

Participantwell I forgot to record the game so time I got home from work to watch it, it was already in second inning. watched a bit but ended up recording rest so I could watch it later. so I watched it. offense was really bad today but guys that throw a lot of junk and can get it close are tough on us mainly cause most of our guys just wont adjust and take stuff the opposite way. trying to pull everything is not the answer. with the guy pitching, though im a bader fan, I would have went with carp at third and edman in outfield. bader just looked lost against him and will with those type of guys until he decides to give up just going for power. but again plenty of other guys didn’t hit also, like wong\, dejong, and fowler all sandwiched around bader so baders performance matters not either way. even the guys that hit, didn’t look all that great most of the time. but their starter pitched great, in post season you run into great pitching. Flaherty was good but not totally dominant. fans on this board and elsewhere for that matter are funny. everybody seems to think that an offense that has struggled most of the season across the board is suddenly gonna turn it up against better pitching. unless a pitcher is just off, we are gonna just have to have some quality at bats but even then, things don’t always go your way. the other team is trying to win too. I do like how we are doing against their closer, I don’t think they are gonna totally rely on him in close games. all in all 1-1 isn’t bad going home.
October 4, 2019 at 10:39 pm #110274Some terrible at bats tonight. Folten-whatever-his-name-is was made to look like Mickey Lolich because our guys were swinging at every slider off the plate that came their way. But, leaving Atlanta with a split is ok as long as we put some better at-bats together on Sunday. We should wrap this thing up by Monday. Just a shame Flaherty had no run support early, would have been a different game.
October 5, 2019 at 1:40 am #110278I agree. Flahertys last two runs are hardly on him. Couldn’t tell if folty pitches well or we just sucked again from right field but I must be a bad luck charm!
