I like giving Edman a shot and hitting him at the top, but then Shildt went back to Goldschmidt at 2.
DeJong does need to drop down to 5 or 6 for awhile. I would have put Edman and Wong at the top, then Goldy and Ozuna.
Glad I chose watch the college series final instead of this trainwreck of a Cardinal team.

Agree. The announcers commented on how effective the Oakland ‘pen has been. Is it their effectiveness or the Redbirds ineffectiveness? Are the Burds making them look better than they really are?
The a Cardinal offense is bogged down and I am not sure what it will take them to get them going …
I read elsewhere that Mengden’s last start was against the Memphis Redbirds in AAA and he gave up 5 runs in 4-1/3 innings. This has to be the nadir of the season…right?
Mengden was optioned in early June and just recalled in time to slam the door in the Cards’ face tonight. His last MLB outing in early June included 6 earned runs in 2 and 1/3 innings and his last game with Vegas last week against Memphis included 5 earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings.
The wheels are off and don’t be surprised if they stay off. Mo has nobody to fire this year, so don’t bet on a short-term turnaround. The problem ain’t leaving anytime soon.
I just read the transcript of Shildty’s little tirade before the game. The dude is starting to feel the pressure. Hopefully he doesn’t go all Mickey Calloway on us.

that has to say something…maybe all this hoo-ra happy player manager style coaching from Shildt is not working…when all you do is support the guys whoa re failing as your means of encouragement and strategy for fixing a problem maybe you breed this kind of complacency as if there is some switch that will happen if we just keep saying “dont worry” or “we have to get better”
Matheny did whatever it took to get the players to play better…even if it meant players not liking him or Matheny saying the wrong thing to the media or not saying anything…the weak willed guys maybe keep struggling in that environment but the tactic that MM was using did work…even if it ended up being his demise
maybe the players need to get angry at the manager…maybe the manager should sit the money makers until they earn their spots back…
Goldy, Carp, DeJong…sit em…start 3 of the bench players every day and shuffle out the poor performers
do it not just for one game…but for an extended time
i remember MM getting Carp going by putting him in the 7 or 8 spot….and it worked… put Goldy down there…
if i am Mo i need to inject somethign into the team…whether moving a player or two to bring in new life from the minors….or trading guys to bring in others outside…
what they have right now may be a happy and friendly clubhouse…but they arent hitting
Show me 1 solid week of 75% of the hitters hitting well or even above average…and i will be happy to be wrong…but we havent seen a good week of play from the hitters since April…and even then it wasnt outstanding
i love the Cardinals…i like these players….but they arent working well together…and that is the coach’s job to make the good pieces work together…and they are not… that is on Shildt…and HE needs to get better and fix this…the players have some agency but when the whole team is bad that is on the coach…adn not the GM necessarily as the pieces are good and have good track records the GM still has to deal with it and force changes in personel so he isnt off the hook…let’s not act like Carpenter wouldnt still be problem right now if he wasnt given the extension…same for Mikolas… they’d still be on the team and forcing the same problem…they are vets under contract for this year and underperforming and releasing them would not have happened…so blame on the GM for this is not really accurate…outside of the Fowler signing hamstringing some ability to bring up kids easily…
We can hindsight the GM all we want…but in the present RIGHT NOW we have good players not playing well as a team…that is the managers fault…hsi job is to get them to play well…and he isnt doing it…should we fire him? I dont know…it wont happen so i dont think that is an option…
all we keep hearing as the solution for the problems is they have to play better…well that is a BS response…EVERY SINGLE TEMA ND PLAYER can say that about their poor performance…it means nothign to say that is the solution…HOW are you going to get your players to hit Shildt? Because whatever you and they are doing isnt working….so stop and try somethign new…if that doesnt work try somethign new…keep trying…keep changing…keep doign something…id rather fail with crazy schemes and razy lineups than trotting out the same-ish lineup every day and going “shucks” “sorry” “guess we’ll have to do better next time”
These tactics are tird, the players are not playing well, and the games are boring… i can handl losing…i cant handle HOW we are losing….

You might be right. It’s sure not the zenith, although the two 3-game sweeps at Wrigley, by combined scores of 23-10 and 17-6, do it for me.
Jager, I don’t assume that Carp and Mikolas would still be this bad without the extensions. I wish we could have found out. Human beings have a tendency to relax and grow complacent once they reach a certain level of security. Maybe it is Goldy’s problem too.
We have way too many long term contracts that we are stuck with. We need to stop handing them out like candy and make them earn it year to year. The old cost certainty argument becomes a moot point when you end up eating half the contract to get rid of the player.
Here is my fear: These fine young impressional players that we bring up from thd farm ststem are going to be looking at these veterans to show them the keys to succeed at this level. It is really a horrifying thought for St. Louis Cardinal baseball fans. I think to a man, we all know that this team needs to be serious sellers as the trading deadline nears. It makes no difference whatsoever how close this team is to playoff contention, as even a complete idiot knows that this ball club is not even remotely close to resembling a champion.
But how do they sell after just going all in and having literally nothing to sell remotely high on

GACard, they did not “just go all in”, but I agree they would have to sell low on most players on the roster. My guess is they will say what they said last year – that they are both buyers and sellers. Until August 1, we won’t be fully able to assess that.
The most baffling thing they have done this year to me is extending Carpenter….he wasn’t hitting when they did it and except for a 6 week stretch last year he hasn’t done much of anything the past 2 seasons….it’s almost like they were bidding against themselves, and yet somehow he keeps hitting leadoff w/ the exception of tonight’s game, where Edman has 2 hits.
Another weak offense night. But we know that we have a new player who can hit, field and throw in a straight line. Hopefully he is not relegated to the bench.

Consensus? Maybe so but I don’t think the same 4 or 5 people constitute a consensus – just my opinion. What Brian may have to do though is rename this place to The Hindsight Nation. In that way it is easy to lay blame when something doesn’t turn out as we wish. I have learned everyday that there are things in this life much more important than baseball. I enjoy watching it. I don’t enjoy losing but realize that will happen when a team goes flat. I still see the possibility of a light at the end of the tunnel but I also hope it is not a train headed in my direction.
For a consensus, walk around inside Busch during a game and ask them if the FO should be fired and the team should be rebuilt totally? After about 200 opinions or so, that would maybe be a consensus.
No criticism intended. Just wanted to add another opinion.VEB had an article yesterday regarding the team and how nearly every single player is underperforming projections. It’s uncanny. It looks even worse when considering the first month and how many players were playing well.
As best as I can tell, this team is playing scared. I don’t see any other explanation for how bad they’ve been besides that they’re tightened up and can’t fight through it. I don’t know what the solution is, but they need to find it soon. If they can, the division is still within reach. That’s the good news.
