Brebbia got a real generous 1st strike call and went up again and Dozier popped out to 1st to end te threat.
You think they’d use Hicks again?
Dejong taking over for Carpenter as the “doubles guy” on the team. It’s awfully nice to have him hitting 3rd. Unfortunately, Ozuna crushed one right at the 3rd baseman so he didn’t get to come around.
Hicks falls behind 3-1 with poor fastball command, but gets a foul and a whiff on a nasty slider. 1 down.
hicks is throwing good. otherwise pitching been ok. we had that one good offensive inning. be nice to start off here with a win. well that’s a winner.
Back to .500 on the road. Not that it means much at this stage, but 18-10 looks nice and is a 104-win season pace. Hmm, I supposed we’d take that.
Hate I had to miss the Gallegos innings. Was his mound presence as impressive as the results indicate?
Loved this game – Wacha toughed it out and 5 runs after 2 outs was impressive. Harry is back on his game but Hercules needs more BP time. I think something is brewing when Gregerson is brought back – today or tomorrow. Either Munoz goes down (gotta get the pen back to 8) or something happens with Gyorko. I actually think they are shopping him for trade – starts at 3b and 2b this season but I did not understand pulling him last night for Wong – seemed a bit early for a defensive change unless Gyorko’s legs are acting up again.
In any case, #1 of the big 3 (Corbin) is down. The Cards have taken Scherzer down before and I think they have the bats to take all three of the big guns on the Nats down. Matt Adams looks like he is reassuming his tree trunk size. He had a chance to renew several old acquaintances at 1B last night…..lol.

Here I thought they were just moving Gyorko around to give him some at-bats to get him going.

I figured Shildt would revert back to his defensive lineup once Bader was healthy but when you have a guy like JMart hitting .351 you have to play the man.

Wong .860So who do you take your chances against? The “worst” two there are two of the better situational hitters out there, at least in their careers. This lineup is pretty much what we had hoped for prior to the season. If Carp and Yadi get rolling and the starting pitching can start going deeper into games, this team could be really, really special.
Interesting post stlcard25. I don’t worry about Yadi but I do wonder which month or two Carp will select to make his annual appearance. His three strikeouts last night would not have been so bad if he had not turned around on the 3rd strike each time and either looked at or said something to the HPU. He wears the birds on the bat and I am happy to see him when he does well but, in my view, he concentrates on walks and launch angles. One is successful and the other is pop ups and fly outs. When he drives the ball it seems to be right into the shifts or to the first baseman. But he is still contributing at times and his defense seems to be going pretty well but I just can’t see him welded to the leadoff position. Who would be better …I don’t know.
Brian: Re: Gyorko. I have nothing against Gyorko but I just don’t believe he will be a bench sitter all season. Yes, he can play multiple positions and his defense was good last night. He still seems to be riding on his one very good season and now he seems to be injury prone. It will be interesting to see how his season works out but, as a Cardinal, I wish him all the best. I did not read the Goold article before posting so that may explain his playing in Wong’s place but as soon as the lefty left so did Jed.
A comment on Tyler O’Neill. It is easy to see what is going on in that one AB last night. He is trying to hit the ball 1000 feet. He is taking a big swing and losing his balance afterwards.
His natural swing is short and compact. He has enough power to stay back and let that natural quick stroke do the work. No one will remember this guy, and he was actually little before my time but I have heard talk about him – Woody Held. Played in the late ‘50s and ‘60s, primarily for Cleveland. He had this compact swing, and would create a lot of power.
O’Neill, when he is right, is similar. He needs to slow down, relax, and work on just meeting the ball and the home runs will follow, and strikeouts diminish.
