Participantanother homer
April 26, 2019 at 9:52 pm #88900shakenbake, your comment led me to look it up. Not pretty.
If the #stlcards fall tonight, their 2019 record following a day off will drop to 1-3. They had won all four games immediately prior to the breaks. Twice they had five-game winning streaks broken after the day of rest.

April 26, 2019 at 9:58 pm #88901Not liking the way this series has started.

stlcard25ParticipantComing into tonight, the Cards were tied for second worst in the league at giving up homers. Last year they were the very best in the league with 144 and they are now on pace to give up 330 (!) home runs. How juiced is the ball this year? That’s ridiculous.
April 26, 2019 at 10:02 pm #88903With Hudson going tomorrow it’ll be likely an early appearance from the bullpen once again.
Remember when people would rip us carrying 8 arms for the bullpen. Seems pretty smart now doesn’t it? Wish it wasn’t that way.
April 26, 2019 at 10:06 pm #88904A new bottom has been reached with Jedd Gyorko pitching with two outs in the ninth. He also appeared on the mound once last year.
On his fourth straight slider, Gyorko fanned Philip Ervin swinging to end the top of the ninth. 12-1 Reds.
(ESPN called it a slider, while Dan and Ricky suggest a knuckleball.)April 27, 2019 at 7:36 am #88912Sooooo the Cardinals took another off day —- or so it appeared. Hopefully those kind of games are few and far between but, as we all know, it happens. Looks like a lot of rain in Missouri today so hope they can get the game in because more rain is forecast for tomorrow — and for the next 5 days according to the local weather guru.
I know that recalling ONeil was a done deal but when a guy goes 0-11 against AA pitching, I would think he could use some AAA time. I don’t think Hercules is out of options is he? Bader must have been surprised not to start last night but it looks like JMart will be assuming his bench position and Fowler reclaiming RF today. Wonder will Wieters will get his next start….today maybe?
April 27, 2019 at 7:45 am #88914Very minor point, but O’Neill went 1-for 11 at Springfield, a solo home run in his last game. Three strikeouts and no walks. He has two option years remaining.
April 27, 2019 at 8:00 am #88915Don’t know why I posted 0-11. I knew he had a dinger in his last at bat. Not to be too derogatory but Tyler reminds me of that old saying “Even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while.”
April 27, 2019 at 8:06 am #88916This is new territory for this 2019 Cardinal team…..first time all season that they’ve been belted. Up until last night, their worst setback was a 4 run loss to Milwaukee 10 days ago. These Cardinals certainly know how to dish it out, now let’s see how they can take it. You never really know about these things. A thrashing like last night will sometimes send a team into a tailspin. But, if they are truly a team of quality, they will come right back and exact a healthy dose of revenge. Today’s game will be very telling.
April 27, 2019 at 8:47 am #88920I wish our pitching staff pitched inside more. When you let hitters dive over the plate, home runs will be more prevalent. We almost seem afraid to pitch inside. Could you imagine if Hicks backed off some batters? Some batters would come up on their tippytoes, instead of trenched in.
I also remember Greg Maddux having pinpoint control until you homered off him. All of a sudden he would get wild.April 27, 2019 at 9:01 am #88922Seemed like Mikolas was trying to pitch inside to the lefties until the HPU decided they were not strikes when the little box showed that they were.
Speaking of the little white outlined strike box, take notice at times how bad it is on some batters. The strike zone is supposedly determined by the batters batting position but several guys have been shown as having the top of the strike zone at their belt.
Worst calls from all HPUs is the low strike. They can pretty much judge sides of the plate and top but they just can’t squat low enough to judge the bottom. All guessing….educated guessing but guessing nonetheless.
April 27, 2019 at 11:02 am #88926One of those clunkers you see a few times every year. The key after games like this is to come out and win the next day. That puts the bad game in perspective, as an aberration that happens when you play 162.
This could be one of those series where the team that takes 2 of 3 is outscored. Sort of a mini-1960 World Series if you will. Although in that series, the Yankees were clearly the better team. I think the Cards are better than Cincinnati, although I also believe the Reds are a better ball club this year than in recent seasons, and may end up with a +.500 record when all is said and done.
April 27, 2019 at 11:48 am #88928After all of the clamor for Harper all winter it turns out what this team really needs is a top of the rotation starter. Someone who could take the pressure off of everyone else. Right now we have a bunch of number 3 and 4 starters trying to pretend to be number 1.
