Mo says to the fans: “Take that you ungrateful brats. I know what I am doing.” ha ha
Let’s see if we can keep it going. Tough trip coming up.

August 1, 2019 at 9:23 pm #100577Well, that was a regular ass whipping there.
Always enjoy beating the Cubs.
I hope Schildt is very thoughtful about introducing Molina and Carpenter back into mix; especially 1-24 on his rehab Carpenter.
August 1, 2019 at 10:44 pm #100584Once again my sincere apologies to the board. I just cannot deliver the goods on predicting a perfect score. 95% of the time we’ll give the winner and a very close game score, but it’s no dice when it comes to giving you the perfect score. Close is simply not good enough. At this point, I’m not sure whether to ride off into the sunset with my head down in trying to pick the perfect score or to keep on trying…..and probably keep on failing.
August 1, 2019 at 11:17 pm #100588Let’s take best on total runs scored in Oakland. I’ll got with 5.
I’ve watched Oakland a few games this year. They’ve got some grit but they’ll miss Laureano in CF.
August 2, 2019 at 6:51 am #100593Damned if you guys didn’t have a great time last night while I was sleeping! A shutout-hitfest no less. I’m catching up with the game now over a quick lunch of duck paté, pickles and half of a delightful baguette. Then I think I’ll have some more of last night’s rice pudding to get me through that great sixth inning.
August 2, 2019 at 7:31 am #100594My most hated man in baseball – John Lester – he of the green goo in his glove in Boston – bites the dust big time and I was loving every minute of it. Thanks to Holland – 2011 WS hero? – for serving up that prime cut to Matt Wieters. SF DFAed the guy but the Cubs were looking for cheap help.
August 2, 2019 at 7:34 am #100595<I assume Knizer gets the backup job next year but Wieters has been great.>
I like them both but surely Wieters has a lot left in him and a veteran backup who can fill in full time is a definite asset. Extend that man or get him resigned before the rest of MLB is after him.
August 2, 2019 at 7:47 am #100598Wieters can easily still start in MLB and will get a contract elsewhere in 2020 that will reflect his resurrected value. He has earned it.
I found it ironic that the two Cubs additions played a major part in the game. Holland served up the home run ball that essentially locked up their loss and Castellanos had their only hit.
August 2, 2019 at 8:02 am #100600Lets not forget that Wieters did strike out 3 times before that home run. He had a runner on third with less than two out one, or two, of those times.
August 2, 2019 at 8:11 am #100601Uh, Weiters? Valuable???
Well, yes, somewhat. But he’s hitting what, around .230 I believe.
And yes, I know he has a BRG of 4.32 and a GAPIT of 1.26 and a WOR of 3.91.

August 2, 2019 at 8:23 am #100602It seems like all of Weiters HR’s have been at an important time in the game though.
August 2, 2019 at 8:44 am #100605I am not a numbers person but looking at the easy ones I see that Wieters has 10 home runs in 47 games whereas Yadi has 4. Wieters OPS is .789 whereas Yadi’s is .654. Wieters OBP is .289 whereas Yadi is .286.
Yadi has started or played in 71 games whereas Wieters has started or played in 47 (24 less). Weak points are that Wieters has struck out 36 times and Yadi 34.In short I like Wieters. Next year Yadi is 38 and in his last season. He is prone to getting hurt (as are all catchers) so a valuable backup is critical and one who can start more often is even more valuable. Give Wieters a nice, higher than normal, contract offer and see what happens. It is a young man’s game but veterans who can still perform at a high level are not to be ignored. I also really like Kinizer but one more year in AAA and as a backup to Wieters if Yadi goes down is not a bad thing.
August 2, 2019 at 9:01 am #100609That would be great from the Cardinals perspective, but teams cannot make players sign. My bet is that Wieters will seek and get a multi-year contract. Especially at age 33, he has nothing to gain by signing a one-year deal. But if he is forced to accept that, it won’t happen until late in the off-season.
I would be amazed if he took a one-year offer now. Amazed.
While Wieters is not MVP material, I suggest those critical of him take a look around MLB at the offensive numbers of catchers in general.
August 2, 2019 at 9:05 am #100610Minuteman 3, I like your reasoning. Catcher is actually the most physically taxing position. Wieters has been great for us right now and has been the difference in a couple games so far. He swings a powerful bat when he does connect. Really need to hold on to all 3 guys. Like having money in the bank.
August 2, 2019 at 9:16 am #100611
stlcard25ParticipantIf Wieters wanted to come back as a backup I wouldn’t be terribly against it, but suspect that he’ll have a shot to start somewhere. Knizner will be fine as a backup and they have several other catchers moving up in the system. He’s been a Godsend this year but losing your backup catcher is rarely a back breaker.

Sometimes the stats guys get you when you say “seems” but I agree and have the same feeling as you do. This HR was the stake through the heart.
August 2, 2019 at 10:31 am #100629I think Brian is right. Wieters will get a better offer next year from somewhere else. The Cardinals aren’t going to spend too much money on backup catcher when they have Knizer making the minimum.
It isn’t just Wieters HR’s that make him valuable. His defense has been outstanding, much better than I was expecting.
August 2, 2019 at 11:22 am #100641Always a great day when the Cubs lose. Great job on the mound for us tonight.
