If I were the owner of a Big League team, the players, manager and coaching staff would all be required to wear black cleats. And play the game entirely for fun…

With today’s nice W, the Cardinals have once again avoided more than 4 consecutive L’s this season. The ’82 edition of the St. Louis, Cardinals never lost more than 3 consecutive games. I’ve always thought that was impressive.

Real nice work all across the board from the BP today in a 1 run high pressure game. We could use that a little more often.

My inclination to move Leahy out of the rotation might have been premature. Last three outings:
    17.1 ip, 12 h, 4 r, 4 er, 6 bb, 15 k. Libby is really the weak performer relative to the others in the rotation. By bWAR, it’s McGreevy (2.3), Pallante (1.3), Leahy (0.8), May (0.6), Libby (-0.7). By fWAR it’s May (1.8), Pallante (1.3), McGreevy (0.9), Leahy (0.7), Libby (-0.1).

At the halfway point, the Cards are on place for 86 wins. Walker, Burly, Weatherholt, and Herrera are all on pace for 20 HR. O’Brien is on pace for 40 saves. All the rotation but Libby are on pace for at least 162 ip. Pallante on pace for 18 wins.

The Cubbies and Brewers are tied 1-1 in the visitor half of the 10th in MIL. The Phillies have hoisted themselves to within 3.5 games behind the Braves. I think the Phillies are the better team and I’m guessing they’ll win the NLE. Skippy’s Rangers have taken over 1st place in the ALW and the Astros have lifted themselves to only 1.5 games off the pace in that same division, and Rays have now reeled off 5 consecutive W’s to take over 1st place ahead of the Yankees in the ALE. Also, in other baseball news, the Dodgers are out to an early 1-0 lead over another HS team that has no chance…

Uh oh…The Cubbies push across 3 runs to take a 4-1 lead heading into the home half of the 10th in MIL.

Oh, boy…The Brewers have already pushed 1 run across to make it 4-2 in the home half of the 10th with the Cubbies in a world of it as MIL has the bases all jammed up with 0 outs.

Brewers pull to within 1 run after a bases jammed BB pushes Yelich across to make it 4-3. Still 0 outs. If I were foolish enough to wager on baseball, I’d probably bet a dollar that the Cubbies will choke on this one…

Unfortunaly that is all the Crew can get. Cubs win 4-3.

I’d have lost my last hot dollar as the Cubbies hold on after a lazy foul ball out and a GIDP pull them from the fire.

There were quite a few other games scheduled around the league today that I would have rather liked to have seen, but ESPN has predictably chosen to broadcast the Yankees/Red Sox game this evening. You can’t hardly get more mundane and wearisome. I’ll probably end up going out to the driveway and watching as the cracks slowly grow in the concrete…Maybe I’ll see a few ants.

Well, they get 3 at ATL. then 3 at Wrigley, before returning home for 5 with the Brewers and 3 with the Braves. Enjoy your day off kids. School’s not going to get any easier.

They will likely go about 4-10 in these next 14 games.

I miss seeing Torres in the lineup. We should find a spot for him, or send him down. And it will be interesting how we handle the difficult stretch coming up. I will think about drinking the Kool Aid if we get through the next month.

Torres will probably remain until Urias is ready.

Torres in the lineup is fine with me. I like him. He plays hard. But not at 3B. He is clearly not a third baseman. I guess Oli just wanted th throw him out there to see what he looked like. To me that signaled that Oli couldn’t care less about getting into a playoff game.

PS – My previous post on this matter got deleted. I had reservations myself that someone might add more to it rather than what was saying. Thanks for the help.

I had expected the season to be rather excruciating and drag by. But I can’t believe we are at the 81 game halfway point already. It has been enjoyable baseball with a few clunkers. It is a group of players I enjoy watching, except for the pen at least. The second half could be very exciting for a lot of reasons. Maybe attendance will pick up a bit.

Yeah, they’re playing games that are meaningful at the midway point. We all know that no team is going to win every year, so I’ve learned to be grateful for each game that matters. In any case, they won’t see any bargains in these last several games before the break, so I’ll enjoy watching while they still play for something. In my view, that’s all you can really ask for.

Thanks for letting me know. I must have posted it on another thread.

It is a trivial matter. I’m not going to put any more energy into it.
