The Bogsider hadn’t pitched in almost a week, so I guess the mindset was to get him some work. Although no lead is ever safe, I don’t think I’d have handed him the baseball with a reasonably comfortable 4 run lead. He worked 31 pitches during today’s potentially disastrous 9th inning, so I’m thinking he may not be available to work in tomorrow’s afternoon game if need be. Oh well, the Redbirds get the W today so they can worry about all that other stuff after first pitch on Sunday.
Nice win although giving up 15 runs in two games is a concern. But the offense has put up 17. OB really struggling with his command of late and that does not bode well for all the close games we play.
Nice to see the Blazer make an impression. And 3 jacks in the Honda Home Run inning is good philanthropy.
Din-din? We are splurging tonight, something we don’t do often. Hitting Ted’s Montana Grill for a bison steak, baked potato, green beans, and probably a lemonade to drink.
Yeah, Bikemike, O’Riley O’Brien’s been scuffling and I remain thoroughly convinced that, despite his recent struggles, he’s been the linchpin of this team’s success so far this season. If he scatters, the Cardinals are in trouble.
I just now noticed that the Admiral’s working on a perfect game through 7. Dodgers over the Sox 5-0 on the southside. Lining up across from the Dodgers is never a bargain. Especially when you take into consideration that Ohtani’s their #2 SP’er. It ain’t fair.
Yep, we play so many close games that if our bullpen falters, particularly the 9th inning guy, we will fall back.
Talking about Ohtani and his ERA and Gibby’s record – I’ve always wondered why Dutch Leonard’s 0.96 mark in 1914 is not brought up more. He went 19-5 that year in 224 2/3 innings. Seems like that should be the ERA record with Gibby holding the National League mark. Maybe because it was done in the dead ball era they put an asterisk on it like with Rog’s original home run record.
Yamamoto sees the perfect game and the shutout vanish with one swing of the bat as Peters hits a HR to lead-off the home half of the 9th. The Admiral exits after 8.1 IP’ed. Maybe next time…
Yeah, I never did fully understand the reasoning for that either, Bikemike. I recall when I was a youngster, the only thing I was made aware of was that the great Bob Gibson had just set the all time season ERA record during his spectacular ’68 season. I didn’t hear anything at all about anyone named Dutch or a modern day record until at least a few years later. And when I was made aware, I recall being extremely offended that anyone would have the audacity to say some pitcher that I’d never heard of may have had a better ERA than the great Robert Gibson…As far as I’m concerned, Dutch Leonard never existed…Haha!
Well you guys are carrying this team through. Pitching a little suspect but you have those days. Better not happen against better teams and better pitching though. My ball season is finally over so maybe ill get to watch a little more. Our family fun day which ends the season was today. Ill miss the 12 year olds, esp the girls, they brought some personality to the team and improved the most through the season. I need a break from ball for a little while though.
Liberatore is definitely a middle reliever, not a starter. Lately, it’s been looking like Matthews is ready. Maybe it’s time to find out. Oli has been demonstrating all season that he is willing to bring AAA guys up for a tryout, or send a player down when needed. When TLR needed help somewhere, he was only satisfied if the front office got him a player who had already compiled stats and a substantial track record. That was one of the things I didn’t like about him.
Yeah, TLR always leaned towards players who had a few calluses on their hands. Are you under the impression that the Cardinal manager has been the primary authority in regards to who get a bus ticket to Memphis and who gets a first class ride on the jet to fill out the 26 man? I was led to understand that the one they call Bloom was the wizard of who comes and goes. I thought he was the all knowing wise one that was summoned from the baseball pantheon to save us from being doomed to the dismal land of lackluster…
The Phillies lead the Brewers 8-3 in the the home half of the 7th at Miller Park. No lead is ever safe, but the Redbirds stand to gain some ground. And as I’m keying this in Chourio rips a 2 run tater to trim the Phillie lead to 8-5. Lawrence Berra really knew his stuff…
Phillies now lead 9-8 with the Brewers still batting in the 8th. Can’t anyone protect a lead anymore?
Wish I had decided to take the short 4 hour drive up to Minneapolis to catch this series instead of going boating in Lake Michigan for the second consecutive weekend. What a fun series to attend with our Homer Happy Redbirds in full swing, whacking long majestic home runs left and right…..literally.
I think a quick Game Thread Din-Din recap is in order with there being so many din-din entries being bandied about yesterday that it got my head a spinning….in an amusing way. So very refreshing seeing one of our esteemed long time posters in the person of Booyah, enter the din-din party with his maiden entry of chili cheeseburger with all of the fixings and vinegar drenched fries on his trip on over to the Cozy Dog Drive-in. Booyah will claim many a Game Thread Din-Din of The Day with entries such as that. We also had Wooster weighing in with some mouth watering grilled corn on the cob, Rat with a Hungry Man’s chicken frickasee sort of din-din, Cardinal in France with some yummy pork chops, KeepComingBack with some little smashed potato wedges and the esteemed BicycleMike with his highlights from his visit to Ted’s Montana Grill, where he gulped down some very tasty bison, baked potato, baked beans, broccoli……and knowing BicycleMike the way I do, most likely a tall glass of smooth bourbon to wash her all down with. Well, our last Game Thread Din-Din of The Day winner was Bling on Thursday. So if Bling wins today’s honors, he’ll become our first back-to-back victor and thus claim his prize. Well plated gang!
Friday afternoon I picked up a good size tub of roast beef with au jus and some sides. Then Saturday morning a couple baguets from BreadCo, all for a family get together that ended up cancelled because everybody’s kids were sick. So I will be working through all that 3 meals a day.
