Marmol is probably an okay manager. The main job of a manager is keep the clubhouse morale up and don’t mess up game decisions. Clubhouse morale is the most important and it is hard as a fan to be able to evaluate that aspect. It is rare for a manager to make moves that help win games in my opinion and instead the best managers avoid making losing moves. A lot of the managers decisions like lineup construction and pitchers availability are with heavy input from the FO.

I recall seeing a good amount of people around baseball talking about how Francona was going to elevate the Reds and so far it hasn’t amounted to much. Counsell was also a hot hire who people were excited about for the Cubs but he doesn’t seem like he has won then more games. Instead now people rave about Pat Murphy but really I think if you look the common factor of Counsell and Murphy is a smart FO and development / assistant coaching (actual act of coaching like fundamentals) staff.

I will say I think pitching and hitting coaches can make a positive impact and more so than a manager actually. Dave Duncan was a pitching genius and I think he had as much if not more of an impact than La Russa. I’m curious where the game goes in terms of paying coaches. If I were in the FO, I would want to find the best hitting and pitching coach and pay what it takes while accepting a manager who may make some on field mistakes but is good in the clubhouse.

I think Marmol is better than ok. He just got picked as a coach in the all star game. But that doesn’t mean I don’t agree with what’s being said about what the main job of a manager is and the role assist coaches play. Because I do.

Good sweep by the cardinals though its over the reds so thats not saying a whole lot. Reds should have fired their manager already unless just being around 500 ball is considered being good for them. After making playoffs last year, with francona expectations should have been higher. Maybe they didnt do enough during offseason, hard to say but francona would be gone if i was running their show.

On a final good note to today……..

The Cubs lost to the Giants at Wrigley. 2-1 San Francisco your happy final.
