Liberatore must have felt a bit frail or anemic after 85 pitches. That’s getting to be a common malady with pitchers around the league.
The data says third time through the lineup is generally much worse. Same today as it was in yesterday’s world. Just today they use that data and act on it – for better or worse. I guess Ollie decided he didn’t want Bregman vs Libby for the 3rd time. Didn’t seem to matter though as Dobbins got the worst result possible.

I can imagine the wonks saying the data doesn’t lie, always pull the starter. What isn’t considered is whether the starter “much worse” is still better than whatever a reliever comes in with. In this case, I am not sure going to Dobbins was the better move.
I understand what you’re driving at, Jnevel, but he’s working with a 5-0 lead. How is a SP’er ever going to develop the sort of stamina needed to work deep into a baseball game if he never experiences a threshold above 80 to 90 pitches? They handle these guys as though they were delicate cream puffs that could break if they so much as sneeze.

That hit by Busch sure looked like it would have been caught by a normal left fielder.
It’s possible Church would have run down that drive by Conforto, but not sure on that one.

Maybe that’s because these guys do seem to break after sneezing. We have like 15 injuries to our minor league pitchers. Every day I see new headlines come across ESPN about another pitcher hurt. Just a different world. Guys throw so hard and with so much spin compared to yesterday. Batters got faster and stronger so pitchers did the same (or vice versa). Same as in every professional sport. More money equals more incentive to get better. Therefore, more people competing to get better and more companies and trainers working to make people better.
Yeah, it’s good to see the all time great up there, Mang…I happened to notice that he had a pair of cheaters on in the booth. Just think of how many taters he’d have ripped if he’d worn those in his playing days…

Same as BikeMike tuned in after 5. I don’t have a problem with them pulling Libby even if the results weren’t great. Both the data and eyeballs see that Libby gets gassed quickly and he has blow up outings when he gets tired.
I’m not sure how I feel about sticking with Dobbins here. It helps the pen rest, but this is still a big game and 4 runs isn’t out of reach.
Or, maybe it’s because they hardly ever endure any sort of heavy workload. In any case, it was once important for a SP’er to have the ability to accumulate at least a token number of IP’ed. And eventually any relief corps, no matter how efficient, will experience a genuine meltdown if an unreasonable amount of the pitching workload is transferred over to the BP.
