Another uneventful 9th from Brien O’Riley…I could get used to that from the Irishman.
April 8, 2026 at 6:04 pm #304325Sorry to learn of the sad news about Davey Lopes. Davey was a solid Big League baseball player who was the best base stealer in the NL for a few years. A genuine household baseball name throughout the 70’s.
April 8, 2026 at 6:15 pm #304326I just noticed 5 consecutive W’s for the Reds who are now perched atop the NLC. I don’t know much about the Reds this season other than they have a genuine Big League manager.

stlcard25ParticipantA nice win today. Good to see that Walker likes to hit in DC, at least.
Only two Ks from the pitching staff today. I like McGreevy, but he’ll need more swing and miss to really hang around long term.

ParticipantI dont think mcgreevy is going to be that kind of pitcher with the velocity he has. Or lack of i should say.
April 8, 2026 at 7:02 pm #304330I was only able to watch the first few innings but glad to see McGreevy made it through 6. He pitched a very good game. Walker stays hot as well.
I think Herrera is going to heat up soon. Wetherholt needs to get some more extra base hits and was 0 fer today, but generally he has been doing a good job working co in nts and drawing walks which is needed out of the lead off spot.
I actually like 1-5 in the lineup as well Gags. I don’t like Winn at 6 and have always thought he is an 8 hole hitter with Scott 9 as you want those 2 getting the least PA. Not really a good 6 hitter on the team right now.
April 8, 2026 at 7:05 pm #304331Well, whatever sort of pitcher he projects himself to be, he’s 12-5 with a respectable 3.72 ERA while working a little over 135 IP’ed in 22 turns in his young Big League career. Let’s all hope he doesn’t change anything at all in regards to his approach while working atop the pitcher’s mound.
April 8, 2026 at 7:08 pm #304332Boston beat the Brewers today 5-0.
Cubs are up on Tampa Bay 6-1.
The Marlins lead the Reds 6-2.
FYI,
Going into today the Cubs were in last place.April 8, 2026 at 7:13 pm #304333Fermin is on a pace to have 27 ABs over the course of the season.
Albert-
Agreed both re Winn at 8 and the absence of a good option at 6. Baez, Noot, or Crooks as the most plausible options?
April 8, 2026 at 7:33 pm #304334Despite JJ going 0fer, he came around to score after his only time reaching base today via the BB. His primary job out of the lead-off slot is to cross HP and he’s done a pretty nice job. He’s tied for the team lead with Walker with 10 runs scored. As much as the game has changed in recent years, I’d have to say that runs continue to be important in the game of baseball.
April 8, 2026 at 7:51 pm #304335You guys make a good point about hitting Winn lower. Lifetime OBP just above .300. I was thinking he should be at 2, but maybe not depending on who else we have in the lineup. One thing for sure is he should never hit 4th – have no idea why Ollie had him there early on other than Ollie does weird stuff sometimes.
April 8, 2026 at 8:02 pm #304336He laid down a bunt with baserunners aboard during a PA from the cleanup slot earlier this season. I’m not kidding.

Ultimately for the team at the end of the day that is what matters. Wetherholt gets on base and he is a good base runner so he should be able to cross home many times. Wetherholt does the small things well and he has a great baseball IQ. He needs to improve in some areas as he keeps getting under the ball too much but I think he will make some adjustments there and hit better soon.
April 8, 2026 at 9:07 pm #304341Yeah Albert, so far so good for JJ.
April 8, 2026 at 9:24 pm #304342I looked it up to find out the last time a Cardinal scored 100 runs in a season who was primarily slotted at leadoff and it was Matt Carpenter in 2015. More recently, Tommy Edman came close in both ’21 and ’22 when he crossed HP 91 and 95 times respectively. Hopefully, JJ will be the next Redbird to come near or eclipse that 100 runs mark from the leadoff slot in the not too distant future. I’d guess he’s got a decent chance to do so.

I agree 1TD. That Dodger infield of the 70’s that included Cey, Russell, Lopes, and Garvey was about as solid as it gets. RIP Davey.
April 9, 2026 at 5:45 am #304350Like most of you I am not quite sure what to make of Walker yet. I am obviously pleased that he is so hot right now but it is going to take awhile longer before we know if this is a mirage or not. If nothing else he is at least demonstrating that he has the potential to be a big leaguer.
April 9, 2026 at 6:45 am #304353
stlcard25ParticipantIf nothing else, it’s nice that Walker has matched his 2024 total and is only one off his 2025 total of taters in such a short time. The offense can really use his power. Having Nootbaar back eventually would be nice, as well. It wouldn’t be a stretch to see the 1-6 all be above average hitters (I know, that should be a baseline but we’ll take it where we can) with JJ-Herrera-Burly-Walker-Gorman-Noot. The bottom half of the lineup is not as exciting, although Winn should at least sniff average with the bat. Scott and Pages are filler, probably. We might see Josh Baez in CF next year, at least against LHP.
April 9, 2026 at 7:05 am #304357The world has turned upside down.
Hard to believe but there are actually more teams in the NL Central with a winning record than the entire American League:
NL CENTRAL
Reds (8-4)
Brewers (8-4)
Pirates (7-5)
Cardinals (7-5)
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Yankees (8-3)
Guardians (8-5)
Rangers (7-5)— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) April 9, 2026
April 9, 2026 at 3:02 pm #304372Hard to believe we’re already one fifteenth into the ’26 season…It’ll be mid Sept. before you can say, “Rumpelstiltskin”…
April 9, 2026 at 3:23 pm #304374The NLC currently has zero teams with a losing record. Who wudda thunk it?
April 9, 2026 at 7:41 pm #304381And the Dodgers have the best W/L record in the Big Leagues. That’s a big surprise. You heard it here first…The Dodgers collect their 3rd consecutive world championship in ’26. Easy call.
