I’d say the ability to reach base is the primary consideration when deciding who fills the lead-off slot but, at the same time, I’d never place Ted Williams or Babe Ruth at lead-off.
Well i didnt and dont take moneyball serious. I ageee that obp is an important factor for a leadoff but again its not the only factor. For one thing he isnt always leading off an inning. If he had a better avg, maybe he would have a few more rbis. True maybe jj is the answer right now based on what people think. But again if he was injured.
, he wouldnt be that answer. Assuming they arent going to cancel the rest of the season, what if whoever came in and put up better numbers and the team did better. Its not as improbable as much as people think. To me a great leadoff can hit well and get on other ways as well. Jj might get there but just because hes on paper is their best option, doesnt make him great.Plus 1tough, i figure ruth oe williams hit leafoff during an inning quite a few times. Wonder what their stats were. Prob i bet about the same as otherwise which would be pretty good and def help the team.
I’m sure they did too, Willie, but if I’m a pitcher, I dream of a perfect utopian pitcher’s world in which I face Ruth or Williams leading off an inning with the bases empty every time…
I recall hearing something similar to the following during the national broadcast of the 2004 NLCS…”Clemens strikes out the dangerous Walker for the final out of the inning which will give him and the Astros the added bonus of facing Albert Pujols with the bases empty to lead off the next inning”…
Well i dont know about williams case since ive never really followed boston. But with the yankees, whether it be ruth, gherig, or someone else, you def had to pitch well regardless.
Liberatore’s pitching line doesn’t look too good. By the time August rolls around we shouldn’t really still be rolling out a starter with an ERA over 5.
Well im out gettung my evening walk on, by commrnts i was expecting a really bad line. But checking the score its a pretty close game. Neither pitcher is farung great.
When you hand the baseball to this guy it’s tantamount to striking the colors. The battle’s all over.
I have to concede that he sometimes generates quite a bit of movement on the baseball. It’s the ones that don’t move that are disturbing.
