It happens.
Helsley clearly isn’t having the season he had last year but most probably figured he would take a half step back.
It’s a gut punch every time something like this happens though.

jj-cf-stlParticipantA Q-offer to Helsley this winter?
Is that really an option?
Cut bait before August.June 10, 2025 at 9:53 am #284561JJ, I would have entertained that idea a month ago because I was confident Helsley would reject it and we would get a comp pick but no longer. Helsley is nowhere close to being worth the QO and should not be on the mound in the 9th inning.
Overall I think this team has overachieved this year so the harping and bashing of Marmol after each loss seems a bit ridiculous. We usually don’t hear that wailing and gnashing of teeth after a victory.
Having said that if the manager continues to roll out number 56 for each save opportunity I may jump on the bandwagon. The reality is that this team has a small margin of error to win games. We don’t have an explosive offense so we must have impeccable defense, base running, starting pitching, and relief pitching to win games. I am to the point when I just turn the tv off when the 9th inning starts.
June 10, 2025 at 10:02 am #284563Helsley has blown three straight saves. And he is supposed to be our big trade chip? What a joke.
Indeed,Scotty. His miserable performances have cost this team dearly. Not only for what’s occurred on the field of play, but also for what we can, or now can’t, fetch via trade. I bet his trade value has plummeted 60% in these past couple of months. It’s now to the point that it may not be worth trading him at all. In a best case scenario, he gets hot over this next month and recovers a nice chunk of the trade value that he’s lost…….and then we deal him to any team not named the Chicago cubs…..unless their package knocks our socks off. You know the cubbies actually may be the best landing spot for Helsley. They’d love to have him and would definitely overpay for his services.
June 10, 2025 at 10:15 am #284565So not trading Helsley in the off season when we could have gotten a kings ransom from somebody ends up being another disastrous move by this FO! Now we can’t get near as much for him AND his meet presence has COST us wins! I will be so happy when at least some of these FO guys are gone at seasons end!

jj-cf-stlParticipantI’ll take the under on Bill offering anyone 22mil for next season.
June 10, 2025 at 7:01 pm #284582Helsley is a reliever and had one year left. We weren’t getting a King’s Ransom. Look at other closer trades to see what we’d have gotten. Basically what we got for Hicks. Maybe just slightly better than that. By waiting, he’s now worth . . . about the same thing.

jj-cf-stlParticipantMaybe we don’t flip Helsley and it never mattered what we could have gotten in trade return.
June 10, 2025 at 10:24 pm #284605Jnevel if you think Helsley value tbis off season was the same as Hicks when we traded him all I can say is we will have to agree to disagree!
