O’Brien deserves a shot to be the regular 9th inning guy for sure. I have been saying that for awhile.
Goes right along with Winn batting third. Oli has this weird esteem ranking. As to not offend anyone, he makes stupid baseball decisions. God forbid we let their play make the decisions. If Oli stays….. More of the same.
What do you expect from a manager who places Pujols and Donovan in the respective 2 and 5 slots for both games of a postseason series when they were both were placed in the inverse slots of the order and had been having tremendous amounts of success in those batting order positions practically all season long? The little whiz-kid is nuts.
Not exactly a good showing but should be expected from the team that traded some bullpen and then the bullpen lets them down.

As long as that little black poodle under his cap is fed and watered, Jo Jo’s pretty good.
It’s not the poodle-do that bothers me. It’s that little move he makes before each pitch that I find disturbing.
As I have said before game threads are not the place for reasoned analysis, especially after losing 2 of 3 to one of the worst teams in history.
I am just as PO’d as everyone but I am just not sure who to be PO’d at. This current bullpen is really not any worse than it was before the deadline. I will take my chances with O’Brien and JoJo over Helsley any day of the week but JoJo just didn’t get it done today or we would be having a different discussion. He has actually been really good for awhile now before today. It just stings more to lose to the morbidly bad Rockies.

He’s not the only lefty now if that makes anyone feel better lol.
As a collective. The bullpen was not very good today. I don’t know how I feel about Romero being a full-time closer, Riley getting a shot or a timeshare. Right now it’s clear that Romero is our option #1 in the 9th. That can change based on performance. It’s a reset year. So if they want an open contest for closer then go right ahead.
Who else is a lefty? I didn’t know we brought anyone else up.
I’m not disappointed in Romero. Romero did his best. I was disappointed in the decision making process that put Romero in the 9th in a pressure situation against the best 3 right handed hitters the Rockies have all in a row.
That’s not the only reason we lost. It was just one of the final reasons.
Not too many things are as mundane and dull as spending time during the proverbial dog days of August with an inferior baseball team that doesn’t at all look like it has a chance to compete for anything worthwhile. But when it’s also a matter of watching your favorite team lose a series at home to a team that could quite possibly be the worst of all time, the situation deteriorates to what could be termed genuinely grim and depressing. At any rate, it’s not even half way through August yet, but I’ll be happy when the post-season begins and I’ll be gifted with about a month of watching some enjoyable and exciting Big League baseball. I always make sure to enjoy that time of year and to be entirely grateful for the opportunity to do so because after it’s over, it’s time to freeze my backside off while shoveling the driveway…Haha!

Beautiful post, TD! Over our lifetimes, we have seen worse Cardinal squads than our 2025 team, but probably none as frustrating. They rise to the occasion and defeat our arch rivals 2-3 games, but then come right back and lose 2-3 to this motley crew out of Colorado. They sweep Cleveland on the road, but then come right back the next series and are swept by the lowly Pirates….not scoring even a single run in the process. These are but two of many exasperating examples of this 2025 team. There is absolutely zero chance that Oli will be back.
Yeah, we’ve most definitely suffered through worse teams, Pugs. And I think many of us may have grown a bit spoiled over the 15 or 20 years of watching our favorite team thrive. At any rate, I’ve always thought that this time of the baseball season has a tendency to exacerbate the negative emotions that come to the surface when our favorite team struggles. It always reminds me that there’s a good reason that they call this time of the season, “The Dog Days of August”…Haha!
The Cardinals are such a frustrating team. They win 2 of 3 from the Dodgers, win 2 of 3 from the Cubs, then lose 2 of 3 to the Rockies? Huh? They are the definition of a .500 club. Flashes of brilliance followed by flashes of utter despair. They just don’t have enough good players to string anything together. 81-81 is probably the best we can expect right now.
I should not be, but have been a bit surprised that Oli & Co. went with Romero as the closer after Helsley was dealt. Especially given that he is the only lefty out there now. I would have continued to use him in late inning situations where some lefty hitters are due up, and given O’Brien a look at closer with the electric stuff he possesses.
Romero does not seem like a long term solution at closer, whereas O’Brien has that potential.
