They traded for McGee. And you mentioned Carpenter and Wainwright who were both on Jocketty’s resume. Jim Edmonds is marginal in the sense that he was an established player, but I’d say he didn’t emerge as a genuine star until after he suited up in a Cardinal uniform. Again, Edmonds belongs on Jocketty’s resume. I’ll always maintain that any genuine team success such as championships or pennants during Johnny’s tenure was realized from riding Jocketty’s coattails, but that’s just my personal view.

I agree 1TD. Jocketty made a lot of great trades. Baseball was a bit different then. But for a long while, he was ahead of the curve until he wasn’t anymore. Will Clark and Larry Walker were other great players he brought in that performed well. And you can’t forget McGwire despite the steroids.

Let’s hope Bloom can stay ahead of the curve (or at least with it for some time). I’m excited by what I’ve seen so far with the people they have brought in and the commitment they seem to be making to development although it’s hard to see firsthand yet if it’s having a direct impact on results yet. The FCL and Dominican teams in general have better records than in the past. And we have some standout players across the minors. But we had some standout players every year in the past and I don’t know that the quantity is up this season. The only real difference this season aside from the FCL team being more competitive is that we have pitchers hurt in droves across the system.

Goldschmidt wasn’t a prospect! The question was when was the last time the Cardinals traded for a prospect who became a star, and the answer may very well be Willie McGee in the 1980’s! So if that is true why would anyone want to trade Burleson for any prospect knowing the history of the current FO! Again these kind of things are the reason we are where we are today!

I don’t think David Freese really qualifies but he is close. Ryan Ludwick is also close.

Yes, it’s Wainwright then. Steve, my point is the Cardinals never trade anything of value from the big league club unless it’s on an expiring contract. You have to go back to Shelby Miller or Rasmus or JD Drew. They can’t get value back if they don’t trade value away. Or at least it’s highly unlikely. No one is giving up a star prospect for an expiring contract unless it’s like Juan Soto. And even that trade San Diego made with the Nationals now looks pretty bad for the Padres. Trading someone like Burleson would break that trend. He’s a good player in his prime. We never trade those guys.

Bills model funds position player acquisitions to sell tickets. For every higher end Gray type pitching acquisition, there are multiple Gibson, Lynn and Matz type signings. So it’s draft and trade for pitching going forward, that is affordable on Bill terms, without robbing from the lineup that he believes generates his revenue. Check the attendance Bill.

Eventually near-minimum position players becomes arb salaries. When there are no excess funds for Bader and Edman extensions, they get dealt to patch holes in the pitching staff with short term rentals. The roster currently has one arb3, and two arb2’s, all relievers.

Bloom can only accomplish what Bill allows from the welfare line.

Jnevel perhaps the reason they don’t do it is because it’s not smart business? I read somewhere where only 5% of the prospects traded at the deadline actually make a big contribution at the mlb level! I just hate to see us trade Burleson, who at worst is a serviceable mlb player for someone who might one day do something! Usually they don’t! We have traded 3 players tbis decade who have gone on to win LCS MVP, 2 in the same year we traded them! I am sure there are reasons we did that but I hate it!

Fernando Tatis could be argued to be a prospect that exploded with the Cardinals after the Royce Clayton/Stottlemeyer deal in which we also picked up Darren Oliver. Of course it only lasted a few seasons but we got Steve Kline for him.
