If I had to guess today, I think we see Helsley, Fedde, Matz, Maton, Pozo, and Burleson get traded. I’d like to see Arenado go if they can swing it, but his deal and NTC are complicated. That’s my best guess anyway. Some of you will be sad about Burleson and Pozo I am sure. But the team needs to start making decisions to balance the roster.
July 20, 2025 at 6:58 pm #287801the sweep by Arizona is probably a blessing in disguise, now we can be heavy sellers at the deadline and load up for the future. The aging Sonny Gray and the fragile Matthew Liberatore are the only pitchers worth keeping. Walker, Scott and Winn are probably safe and perhaps Herrera, Donovan, Nootbaar and Burleson too.
I laugh at posts like these. Heavy sellers huh? Most of the heavy selling we could do was most of the players you listed as players who you want to stay.
We trade from the bullpen and maybe Fedde and we get almost nothing ready to contribute. You maybe get a top 15 prospect for Ryan but all the rest you are getting likely low or high A top 25-30 talent at best. Miles imo is working his way into a DFA soon.
I mean we saw what happened with the great sell off of 2023. We haven’t seen much from that group and some of those guys were well regarded. We have less to sell now unless guys just waive a no trade. The haul won’t be even as good.

jj-cf-stlParticipantTurns out ARI won the game only using one out.
DFA yourself Mo.July 20, 2025 at 7:13 pm #287803Maton is the best trade piece we have of the expiring contracts due to his ultra low salary. Helsley is probably next because of his track record and reasonable salary. Then Matz. The Cardinals may eat a little of what Matz is owed to get a decent prospect. Finally, Fedde is probably worth just a low minors’ semi-prospect if the Cardinals don’t eat any of his remaining dollars. Expect Maton and Helsley to each bring back something similar to what we got for Jordan Hicks.
July 20, 2025 at 7:15 pm #287804That’s a good way to put it, jj. The trend seems to be that if you miss the first inning, you miss the game.
July 20, 2025 at 7:27 pm #287805After a 3 game sweep of the best team in baseball, the Brewers are now crowding the Cubbies atop the NLC. Our old friend Jose Quintana was the winning pitcher of decision over the Dodgers today. The Brewers look to be a solid baseball team and they’re operating with what is for all practical purposes a 4 man rotation with the 5th guy a sort of guess your turn proposition.
July 20, 2025 at 7:44 pm #287810The Brewers have some smart baseball people. Ownership listens to them. They move players at the right time when their value is high. They’re roster is streamlined and they have a plan. Sentimentality over players doesn’t factor in.
July 20, 2025 at 7:51 pm #287811Yeah, KCB, they certainly seem to have an idea of what it takes to field a decent baseball team. And the 2 team race atop the NLC may end up being entertaining to watch. That CHI/MIL rivalry has become an intense one in the last several years.
July 21, 2025 at 10:45 am #287835We might be able to dump one in a deal where we move on from Helsley and tell the buyer they have to take Mikolas to close the deal.
Unfortunately Mikolas has a NTC so he won’t be traded unless he gives his permission.

I agree that the roster needs to be balanced but I would trade Gorman before Burly easily.
July 21, 2025 at 12:47 pm #287841
jj-cf-stlParticipantBurly has most recent, most relevant in his favor. Trade them both. Acquire pitching, then we can cobble a lineup with the remaining spare parts. A cobbled pitching staff is a proven dead end. I hope Bloom has a pitching first game plan.
July 21, 2025 at 1:19 pm #287843A 1B/DH ok platoon hitter is not going to return anything that will make any difference. Neither will an OK 2B/3B who doesn’t contribute offensively and gets hurt. It would be more about moving on from dead ends than balancing or stocking the farm. But Bloom does need to field a team next season, and there isn’t anything much in AAA, so they might still be here.
July 21, 2025 at 2:02 pm #287845I think Burly is an above average player. He is on pace to put up 2.8 WAR this year or close to it. MLB average is 2.0.
Gorman is on pace to put up 0.2 WAR.
There really isn’t much comparison in the two.
July 21, 2025 at 2:17 pm #287847But of course other teams know that, too…
July 21, 2025 at 2:24 pm #287848That’s my point exactly. Trade Burleson. He’s worth more than Gorman and he doesn’t fit on our roster. And, he’s probably close to peak value. Someone will want a left side hitter who has cost control and years of control. Thus, we get a return player we can use. Trading Gorman nets us less and doesn’t fix much. And, he may not have hit peak value yet.
July 21, 2025 at 3:17 pm #287849I just view it differently. I think we should be keeping productive cost controlled players with multiple years of control. Unless we are viewing this being a five year rebuild which I do not.
July 21, 2025 at 3:32 pm #287850Someone will want a left side hitter who has cost control and years of control.
If anybody could use a hitter of any description it is the Cardinals, and ‘he doesn’t fit on our roster’.
July 21, 2025 at 6:05 pm #287857How does Gorman fit our roster better than Burleson? IMO trading our best bat and continuing to see what Gorman can do seems silly! We know what Gorman does, next to nothing!
July 21, 2025 at 7:30 pm #287859
jj-cf-stlParticipantThe more players you keep, the longer it takes to acquire a pitching staff. Selective thinning will bring a trickling return. The farm and Bills pockets aren’t overflowing. Drafting is slow and trading well is mandatory.
July 21, 2025 at 7:49 pm #287860I feel like this is obvious but I’ll say it anyway. You have to trade talent another team will want to get something you want. Burleson will be more valuable to someone else than he is to the Cardinals so that’s why it is likely he gets traded. I know he can hit. So does everyone else. I know Gorman struggles to hit. So does everyone else. Which one is a team vying for the playoffs more likely to overpay for?
July 21, 2025 at 8:22 pm #287864
jj-cf-stlParticipantI’ve always been in fan of the CLE model.
July 21, 2025 at 9:30 pm #287874I guess we should go ahead and trade Donovan and Herrera too! Some playoff contender will want them also! Then we will get 3 prospects in return who we can overhype and overrate like Gorman and Walker and be even worse than we are already! How anyone can really believe that this current FO can be trusted to trade for a prospect that can really play is beyond me! What is that trust based on? When is the last time we traded for a prospect who became a star? I truly can’t remember?

Are we closing the book on Hence, Matthews and Roby so soon? We just drafted a very well thought of starter with the 5th pick.
July 21, 2025 at 10:09 pm #287876How does Gorman fit our roster better than Burleson? IMO trading our best bat and continuing to see what Gorman can do seems silly! We know what Gorman does, next to nothing
That’s not the S word I was thinking of.
For a team who lacks a true MOTO bat. Trading away guys like Burly and Herrera at this point is just throwing kerosene on the fire.
I guess bowtie is going to see if NA trade list has opened up a bit. The ownership is getting desperate and my guess is nothing will change unless they eat a big chunk of his remaining deal. Something they seem reluctant to do so far.
July 21, 2025 at 10:22 pm #287877We traded for Goldschmidt and he won an MVP. That isn’t bad. Of course he was already a star. We traded for Arenado and he’s has a very good career with one star year in St. Louis. You have to go a long long way back to find a player who we traded for who became a star though. Maybe Ozzie Smith was the last. Or Wainwright or Carpenter. I guess Wainwright would be the true last one but the Cardinals grew him first into a star. And, we had JD Drew to trade, not Gorman or a 1/3 of a season of Helsley.
It’s hard to get a star back when you’re trading an expiring contract. Are you upset that Mozeliak couldn’t get a star out of 3 months of Jordan Montgomery? Seriously? Mozeliak did quite good in trading a hurt Harrison Bader for a front line starter in Montgomery for 1 year who he then traded for Saggese and Roby. Essentially we shipped a hurt season of Bader for a close to star level season of Montgomery and 7 seasons each of whatever Saggese and Roby become. That’s a pretty good return even if those two just end up as role players. Trading has actually been MO’s strength over the years. There’s a long list of good trades he’s made. Buying free agents has been his weakness along with letting a farm system collapse and as of lately promoting guys too early. I know he has one terrible horrible trade in Ozuna. But I ask you to name a general manager who’s been trading for 10 years and doesn’t have a terrible trade. Yes, I trust Mo to find a good trade.
