I am optimistic about the 2026 rotation, eventually. I just have a problem with the first few months. With McGreevy, Liberatore, May and Fitts the most likely candidates. Leahy could be # 5. Dobbins will likely miss 2 months. But by the time Dobbins returns the cavalry could charge in the scene in the form of Mathews, Henderson, or Mautz, if they pitch well at Memphis. But I would advocate getting another starter in a 1 year deal.
January 15, 2026 at 10:58 am #299240Which free agent starters are still available that would take a 1 year deal?
Marquez and Gray come to mind.Verlander or Scherzer will probably be too expensive.
January 15, 2026 at 11:04 am #299242What about Bassitt? An innings eater for sure.
January 15, 2026 at 11:26 am #299243Albert, I believe Mathews will have to be added to the 40man at the end of the season so I’d believe they will call him up for at least a cup of coffee.
Doyle will not have to be added yet, and if there’s a lockout, guys on the 40 man cant even play in the minors. So taking their development time with him, before adding him to the 40 Man so that he could pitch competitively in the start of 2027 could be majorly advantageous.
January 15, 2026 at 12:39 pm #299249I would assume most likely Mathews has made a big league debut by the middle of the year. He is 25 and has pitched 110+ innings in AAA already. He should be ready soon and 40 man wise there are plenty of guys they could cut (Fermin / Prieto). Even if Mathews numbers are great I still get him up to test him.
Doyle I would not expect to see in Stl unless he just dominates so much he is showing AAA is a bore.
January 15, 2026 at 12:40 pm #29925027, from what I have read Dobbins is supposed to be ready at the beginning of the year. Seems aggressive time line wise but going with what I read.
January 15, 2026 at 12:47 pm #299253I think the 7 mentioned by ATM will be our primary rotation candidates. Matthews could potentially be a mid-season call up. I don’t think Bloom will rush Doyle. He seems like a 2027 candidate to me.
If we were to add another veteran I would like to see a reunion with our old friend Jose Quintana but he may have better options.
January 15, 2026 at 2:00 pm #299255Rotation?…The ’26 edition might not ever turn over due to continuous revision. I’d have to guess there’s an outside chance that the one they call Chaim may take a turn.

jj-cf-stlParticipant“It may take 10 guys next season”
I guess the question is, who do you want to see bumped? Where, from SP1 thru SP10, should Bloom add 3 more starters?
Lets assume adding another D. May salary is possible.

MrperkinsParticipantInnings needed? Invite Kyle Gipson to spring training. If he can look even remotely serviceable, give him a 2 million dollar contract bonus for making team out of spring training and 250k for every start he makes. Move on when you are sure you have the arms to fill the starts. If he somehow ends up making 32 starts then he probably ended up earning 10 mill (8mil incent+2 mil base). He wanted to return to St Louis last year, was always regarded as a great clubhouse guy, and can teach the youngsters a trick or 2.
January 16, 2026 at 7:44 am #299313Jim Wyatt, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson have gig together doing a podcast. I.m pretty sure they have moved over the line and joined us in the ‘fans’ category.

January 16, 2026 at 5:39 pm #299354Why would anyone assume a person is ever fully recovered from a torn achilles tendon? Griffin Canning seems like an unnecessary risk unless you truly believe.
January 16, 2026 at 7:37 pm #299356
jj-cf-stlParticipantCanning would be SP7 for me, if he comes that cheap.
January 16, 2026 at 9:31 pm #299358From the MLBTR blurb: “. . . persistent injuries, as he’s missed time in his career due to not just last year’s Achilles tear but also elbow, groin and calf injuries over the years.”
Reminds me of Rent-a-Wreck.

MrperkinsParticipantYou never know. I sure thought Matthew Boyd was toast.

jj-cf-stlParticipantAre we done here?
Are there any funds to sign a vet?January 30, 2026 at 12:02 pm #300019It seems like everything is stuck in the mud until we have a resolution on Donny. If he stays then the roster may be set. If he leaves I would expect another OF to be added.
January 30, 2026 at 1:22 pm #300024
jj-cf-stlParticipantNot adding additional vet IP helps open the runway for Leahy. Maybe we are a frozen budget, besides any low hanging fruit.

Fitts
Pallante in the pen as the workhorse. He will find starts.January 31, 2026 at 6:13 am #300047
jj-cf-stlParticipantI’ve got Leahy ahead of Fitts because he has faced twice as many batters and done twice as well, if you will.
Fitts may be a SP4, ahead of Leahy who has pitched in a reliever role, but he may be Pallante also. I like Leahy and Fitts possible upside over Andre, who may be needed to start at any time from the pen, especially after the deadline.
If Andre is SP6, from the pen, does that buy the farm time to have a starter ready? I don’t know on SP7 readiness.
March 25, 2026 at 12:55 pm #303211I guess Pallantes good spring earned him the spot in the rotation. I was hoping Fitts to get the last spot. But with day off Friday, Pallante will be in the pen until next week, correct?
March 25, 2026 at 12:58 pm #303212Eventually Mathews and Dobbins may get a chance to start. Henderson perhaps this summer as well. Among others, Henderson and Mathews have to be added to the 40 man roster by this November.
March 25, 2026 at 5:21 pm #303221Curious why you’d highlight Henderson, who is hurt and not throwing currently, ahead of Mautz, who is and is already on the 40-man. My money would be on Brycen debuting ahead of Ixan and maybe even Mathews depending on the situation.
But Dobbins and Fitts are likely ahead of all three.
March 25, 2026 at 5:29 pm #303224I just forgot to add Mautz. But in my personal rankings I’ve airways liked Henderson better. And I hadn’t heard anything of Hendersons lat strain, which was supposedly the mild variety. But apparently the injury may be worse.
March 25, 2026 at 5:41 pm #303226
jj-cf-stlParticipant“I guess Pallante good spring….”
There is no competition in ST, see Valazquez. Pallante was penciled in as soon as they settled on his arb amount.
