I would be interested in McCutchen but I wonder if he is just Pirates or bust? He might retire if the Pirates aren’t bringing him back.
I saw an erroneous connection of McCutchen to the Cards. I am for giving Saggesse all the reps in LF possible.
The bench is around 10 guys competing for starts if you count Winn, Burly and Herrera as the regulars.

If not Marte, maybe we could sign Ritchie Zisk or Al Oliver. They were both pretty decent when they were in Pittsburgh. All three have the same potential for on-field production, so it’s just about who would sign tbe cheapest and roll into camp.
While the most likely scenario is that the Cards will sign an aging OF on a cheap one year deal it would be nice if they use some prospect surplus to trade a for a young OF with multiple years of control. We have plenty of catchers. Would Crooks bring back a young OF with upside. Or maybe Crooks and another player?
They could get Castellanos on a cheap deal as he was released by the Phillies
Hit .250 with 17 HR’s and 72 RBI….those #’s would be better hitting #’s than any current Cardinal Outfielder
Why would they sign Castellanos? He isn’t an OFer as he is a pure DH realistically and I would rather just play Walker out there. Doesn’t Cataellanos have reported club house problems as well?
The pros on castellanos would be:
Best available free agent right-handed OF bat, which is a apparently something they want.
The Cardinals don’t have much OF production and Nootbar is most likely on the shelf again to start the year

Castellanos has some major baggage I don’t think a young, rebuilding team wants. Stuff he admits to and others the team and his former mates didn’t like. That and like Cutch really doesn’t play the field but hey we have Jon Jay the miracle worker. Lol
Idk man. Seems like a trade isn’t likely unless Romwro is dealt. They might go down that Pham-Grichuk road. They do have time to decide on that.
Castellanos has baggage for bringing beer in the clubhouse, Carlos Martinez didn’t for vodka in water bottles?!?
I don’t want them to sign him after reading that story about Castellanos but good lord folks, CMart was hammered by the first pitch!
Just because Cmart wasn’t a good clubhouse presence doesn’t make it forgivable to sign another bad clubhouse presence.
Even clubhouse problems aside, if the goal is to acquire as many negative WAR players as possible, Castellanos helps there but I don’t think he helps in other ways.
When it comes to negative war, Walker has RF locked up. Pass on Castellanos, but for us, field value doesn’t reign supreme. We have our draft scholarships and their initial investments, w/runways lined up again. That has nothing to do with field production. To this point it’s gifted.
I am ever increasingly pleased with not wasting any resources. The dream is to develop as many resources as possible. Think building an empire. Strict focus. No waste.
The next phase where resources are spent will be riviting. Not just money, but the Cardinal way according to Herzog was to deal three nice players for a great one like he did with Jack Clark.
David Green was hard for me to deal with. I truly loved dreaming on his stardom. His personal habits made him tradable, but his potential was limitless. The Mark McGwire deal didn’t even hurt.
Goldy and Arenado taught us minor league depth can get you anybody you want. We could have had Soto.
After this draft, our MLB holes will be more apparent, and we will have to trim some milb excess.
At this point with the viable contenders gone let Fermín be the RH bat. This season is not about contending anyway.
I like Saggese’s bat better than Fermin’s. Are they really going to try to get Thomas some reps in LF this spring? Or maybe Herrera?
My concern with Herrera moving back to catcher is not only his defensive problems but that it might impact his offense too. There is a reason why catcher’s don’t usually put up huge offensive numbers. The wear and tear of the position takes a toll. Ivan’s main value to the team is his bat so we don’t need to mess that up.

What is interesting about him? Hasn’t played OF for 5 years and missed a couple months with a torn hamstring even without trying to play in the outfield. OPS+ well below 100 and strikes out a lot.
Mlb is looking everywhere for RHB outfielders. Big money has locked up the good ones, long term.

Mountcastle, Walker, Burly, Herrera.
Pick one is not hard.
Any club that can pencil in Walker and Burly as outfielders, can do the same with Ivan.I’d rather Torres get starts than Mayo or Mountcastle. At this point how does L/R even matter?
