Philadelphia 76-72 5.0 GB (2-4 since last update)The Dodgers recovered this week to get back into a tie for the 2nd Wild Card with the Cardinals. If the Cardinals go 7-5 the rest of the way, the Diamondbacks would have to go 11-1 to tie. The Phillies would need to go 13-1 to tie. It seems the playoff spots are down to 6 teams vying for 5 spots.
For the remainder of the season, the Cardinals play 3 games against the Braves, Giants, Brewers and Cubs to close out the season. The Cardinals currently sit 5.5 games out of first place in the Central Division. This is 2 games further out than the last update. At this point, the division is almost out of reach. They would probably have to win the last 6 games of the season to even have a chance.
The Dodgers and Rockies start a three game series tonight with only a half a game separating them. We may end up battling the Rockies for the final wild card spot.
Simply put, we have 3 NL teams vying for 2 unsettled playoff spots. Only one-half game separates these 3 teams. One of these 3 teams got the daylights kicked out of them 3-4 games this past weekend on their home field at the hands of another one of these 3 teams hoping to make the playoffs. This same team also has the toughest schedule to conclude the regular season and has been playing the entire month of September like a bunch of bush leaguers…..not to be confused with Busch leaguers.

So if we end up tied with the Dodgers, we get them on our home field based on our 4-3 advantage in head-to-head play. Based on what has happened, I’d almost rather play that best of 1 gamer out in LA. We definitely beat Colorado in head-to-head action. Glad Miami isn’t in the hunt as I believe the Marlins treated us quite rudely this year.
It’d be fun if the Rox, Dodgers and Cards all tied for the same record. That’d create some havoc.
Oh and the Cards and Marlins split the season series 3-3 with the Marlins outscoring the Cards 24-22.
Ari is free falling out of the race, losing 3 in-a-row and a 2-8 record their last 10 games.
Brewers 7-3 record last 10 leads NL contenders, with Lad and Atl at 6-4.
It’s there for whichever team gets hot.
The Dodgers are starting to pick up steam. They will likely win the NL West, which means the last wild card spot will be the Cards or the Rockies. By the way Trevor Story got hurt last night.

Of note: Even if the Cardinals finish the season 0-10, they still have reversed the three-year decline in wins. They need to go just 3-7 to surpass the 2016 team as well, but the 2015 total of 100 wins is unattainable. Best possible outcome would be 94-68.
A realistic 6-4 finish would require Colorado to go 8-3 just to force a tiebreaker game. Would anyone be disappointed with 90 wins from this Cardinals team?
Brian, you would think losing Morrow would be a big blow to the Cubs but they haven’t had him the last two months and have gone 34-24 since he went on the DL and will clinch the division next week. They seem to be doing it with smoke and mirrors but maybe it will finally catch up to them in the playoffs.
no one in the NL has been dominant in any way…any of the teams in the playoff hunt could beat one another and any could be the representative for the WS
I feel like the Dodgers have the momentum right now…Cubs have been consistent, but far from dominant and while consistent not exceptional and have lost plenty of easy series, Braves are making the best out of poor Nationals team and a faded Phils team

Brewers have been right where they were last year just improved slightly enough to be just IN the playoffs instead of just outside…BRaves are young and hard to figure out esepcially on the pitchign side…and Colorado is as mercurial as ever and the DBacks seem to be fading at the worst timeI think IF the Dodgers get in they are the team to beat…Cubs will be a hard out but they have no assurances on the division and could be a WC team and be done in a game to us, which we could absolutely win…Rockies in a series are tough at home as that stadium can limit the effectiveness of any pitching real quick…Braves could click but i feel they are a year early
After tonight the Cubs play all of their remaining games in Chicago. There is no way they are going to lose the division, especially since they don’t have any more head to head games with the Brewers.
The winner of the WC game could possibly upset the Cubs, but realistically the only NL team with comparable talent is the Dodgers.
Now the AL, on the other hand, is a whole other animal.
The NL is open, I agree. I think the Dodgers are by far the best team. Any of the other teams are basically a coin toss. Each has some weakness. Atlanta’s bullpen, St Louis’ young rotation, Milwaukee generally struggles to score, Colorado is pretty average and getting away with it, and Chicago’s pitching as a whole is middling. I would expect LA to come out of the NL.
In the AL, teams have inflated records due to playing weak, tanking teams. Overall, I think the best teams are better than the best NL teams but the leagues are closer overall than you’d think. Boston clobbered the NL at 16-4 but the Yankees were 11-9, Rays 7-13, the Indians 12-8, Astros 13-7, A’s 12-8, Seattle 6-14 in interleague. Meanwhile the top teams in the NL were Braves at 8-12, Phillies 12-8, Cubs 11-6, Brewers 10-7, Cards 11-9, Dodgers 12-8, Rockies 13-7, Dbacks 10-10. Pretty similar overall amongst the decent teams.
Even with today’s loss, you still have to be bullish on our chances. Hard rooting for LA, but I think we have no choice but to cheer them on to put the finishing touches on a sweep of Colorado……dont we?
Absolutely we should root for Colorado to lose. They are basically the only team standing in our way of the playoffs, assuming LA wins the West.
Also, while it might be nice to catch the Brewers to get the number 1 wild card spot, I don’t think it is that big of a deal because we seem to be a much better team on the road than at home. I assume that is because we rely on the home run and Busch isn’t a home run friendly park.

The Rockies elimination number is 7. Currently, the Brewers would host the Cardinals in the Wild Card game. The Cardinals still control their destiny for the playoffs and Wild Card since they play Milwaukee this week.
For the remainder of the season, the Cardinals play 1 game against the Giants and 3 games against the Brewers and Cubs to close out the season. The Cardinals currently sit 4.5 games out of first place in the Central Division and need a miracle to have a chance to win the division.
It looks like we’ll need to become Tiger and Nats fans next weekend.
Will taking 2 out of three from the Brewers really help us? Or do we need to sweep and still have to sweat it out? Today a STL win and a MIL loss will be huge.
Can we hold off COL? After today…. 7 home games, 4 v. PHI and 3 v. WAS.
Colorado is the only team we need to focus on. Whether we pass Milwaukee or not is irrelevant to me because I don’t think hosting the WC game is that big of an advantage for us.
I was hoping the Dbacks would do us a favor this weekend by knocking off the Rockies but it doesn’t look like they will do it. The Rockies have a much easier schedule the last week than we do. After today they have seven home games against the Phillies and Nationals, neither of which have anything to play for. Meanwhile we have the Brewers and Cubs.
If we squeak in it will be by a razor thin margin.
