These days at the beginning of the season just can’t last indefinitely. I have hope that Flaherty will return to his best days…. and increase his mound presence and demeanor. That Wainwright will once again bail us out and better the expectations that a lot of fans have at present. Montgomery has been okay and will suffice for now. Mikolas… eh, next. I’m losing faith in Woodford and Hudson and then there’s Matz… probably a bad signing. Liberatore could be a savior…. a 3 or 4 guy for now.
There’s Graceffo and McGreevy if they want to push them (not recommended) but Mo has painted himself into a corner and everyone knows it, so he’ll need to deal from desperation. Rough days for us Cardinal fans.

No justification or analysis provided, which would have eliminated both of them quicker than I can type this. His throwing out McGreevy at this point isn’t much more realistic. Maybe Pallante can be ok if stretched out, but he just pitched his way out of a big-league job last week.
Just a frustrated fan venting, it seems, with no better answers than anyone else.
Hjerpe, that’s funny. He has his hands full in A ball right now. That writer should join our discussion next winter. He could come up with the mother of all starter candidate laundry lists.
I wasn’t suggesting it as a blueprint but it illustrates how desperate some followers of the team are getting. One point of his that is true is that there isn’t going to be any outside help walking through the door anytime soon unless they go for a hail mary with Madbum. Most likely it is all going to be internal for the next three months.

I hope not, at least in one case. Gomber hasn’t been good at home or on the road. He has a 9.28 ERA currently.
Marco could be ok, but do they want another lefty?
Why do you say either one “got away”? Gomber helped deliver Arenado, a deal most would make again 100 times out of 100. Marco fetched O’Neill. Marco’s career bWAR is 9.1. O’Neill’s is 9.6. Pretty even.
Speaking of ones “that got away”, tonight we are facing a pitcher that got thrown away, John Brebbia. He did decent out of the pen and as soon as he would have made some money we offed him. Last season all he did was lead the league in appearances, for somebody else. Gave the Giants good service in relief and spot starts.
Friday night in LA it took Flaherty 110 pitches to get 14 outs. Its mathematically possible obviously, but you have to be really bad at pitching.

I think the division is probably out of reach with both the Pirates and the Brewers way out in front. Only 13 instead of 19 games against divisional opponents cuts down on direct control of being able to catch a team.
We might catch one of them but probably not both.
Saw a stat where 14 cardinal teams had stated this poorly and 13 did not make the playoffs with the 1960 team being the exception.
Clearly the Wild Card slots will change the chances but we are 5 games out of the last WC spot and more glaring behind all but one team.
It’s not the number of games behind that is the biggest hurdle – it’s the sheer number of teams that we have to climb over that makes it so tough.
I get the concern about the Brewers, but does anyone really think the Pirates will finish the season in the top tier of the division?
They seem to be better than both the Cubs and the Reds so third place for the Pirates is definitely in play.
The Brewers are solid and probably win the division.
So, do the Cardinals catch the Pirates for second place? Well, there is currently an 8.5 game deficit / hill to climb and it is the Cardinals looking way up at the Buckos. Has to be considered at this point.
I am not that concerned about the Pirates. They will cool off eventually and probably end up being a .500 team, which would be a good season for them.
Catching the Brewers and Cubs will be more difficult but at this point I am not worried about the playoffs. As Jack Buck used to say there is no need worrying about anything until you can get back to the .500 mark.
A data point on the Bucs. A favorable early schedule (if this is accurate):
The St. Louis Cardinals are 10-17… their opponents are a combined 129-108.
The Pirates, for comparison, are 18-8… their opponents are a combined 77-110.I know it's early and the Cardinals are not playing well, but the schedule hasn't helped much either.#STLCards

Plan is for Adam Wainwright to make his next start for the Cardinals in the majors on Saturday. He made three rehab starts in the minors.
