Pitchers around MLB seem to be getting smacked around these first few weeks in April. Maybe they’ll heat up as the weather heats up.
Maybe the new rules are part of it. I just looked at stats comparing this year to last.
Average score of all games during 1st 15 calendar days:
2023: 6.55 to 2.83
2022: 5.70 to 2.29Liberatore makes his third start tonight. Woodford makes his on Friday. If a change is made after that, Liberatore would seemingly have a couple of extra days rest.
Woody made his start, what do we think? Does he stay or go?
It would be hard to remove a guy from the rotation after that solid outing last night. Woodford stepped up and the defense gave him the help he needed. Also, Wainwright is scheduled to pitch a rehab game at Springfield on Tuesday.
Well, If Wainwright’s return is imminent, say one or two turns through the rotation, I don’t think they would make a change before that, and then another several days later. I have more confidence in that than in any sort of reality based definition of a “solid outing” being employed.
Our pitching woes may take a turn for the better if Wainwright can regain his old form, and if Liberatore is ready to be a good major league starter.
Waino will need to be a lot better than he was late last season and in Spring Training though. Libby looks like he is ready to take the next step. Will be interesting to see how the roster looks in a month.
Perhaps Waino and Woodford could both be in the rotation. I wouldn’t be opposed to putting Matz in the bullpen. He seems to be able to be effective for a couple of innings before getting into trouble so maybe the pen is a better place for him. I know that you don’t want to be paying $10.5M to a middle reliever but that is already a sunk cost IMO anyway.
Then as other injuries and struggles develop Liberatore and Hudson are waiting in Memphis to come up.
Just line them up by paycheck size and pick the top five who can answer the bell. That’s how it works.
Has there been any info on Wilking Rodriguez? I thought I had seen something about him beginning a throwing program some time ago.
Waino has a won-loss percentage of .625. Seeings how he will most likely have over 200 wins in a couple of months, is he Cooperstown bound?

It’s encouraging that Woodford and Mikolas had better starts last week. Flaherty deserved a better fate last night. Hope the starters keep it going. Also hope that Waino can pitch like pitch anything close to how he did in 2022, and most of ‘23.
The Cardinals annually try to salvage their pitching staff at the trade deadline. I am sure that was the plan this year also but what if it is too late this time? We are currently 6 games out of first. What if we are 10 or 15 games out by mid July? Do we just punt on the season?
The people suggesting that the FO bolster the rotation are the same ones saying the same thing in Nov. I guess they got it right big-time. Wait until July? The rotation has turned over for the fourth time…. MO might have to deal out of desperation at this point.
Yep but the problem is that it is almost impossible to do deals this time of year. You either do them in the offseason or you wait until July. The Cardinals decided to wait.
After coming over to the Cards in 2022, Romero only gave up 9 hits in 14 1/3 innings while striking out 16.
I was surprised he wasn’t on the opening day roster.Liberatore last night 5.2 IP, 8 H 4 ER, 1 BB, 6 K.
That’s vs AAA batters.
And yet he would still be the ace of this bunch.
I would consider Liberatores start last night as okay because he kept his team in the game. And his first three starts were very good. I’d be tempted to have Liberatore pitch against the Giants and Dodgers than Woodford, but the Cards probably won’t change anything until Waino comes back.
19 games and 6 series into the season we have a 8-11 W/L. We’re 3 under, and I’m having trouble giving a hoot about the rest of the NLC. We’ve been 3 under many times this early, and it just isn’t concerning, yet.
The bullpen ranks 20th by BRwar, which is surprising in that there are 10 worse pens. The rotation ranks 28th which seems appropriate. Overall, the entire staff sits at 27th (due to SP IP).
Why? A 1.482 WHIP overall ranks 26th and base runners r us is poor approach as pitchers. Our BB/9 ranks 19th and H/9 clocks in tied for 28th worse.
All hits are not created equal so where are we at? BA allowed 28th, OBP allowed 26th, SLG% allowed 27th and OPS not surprisingly 27th.
Our pitchers BAbip is second highest in mlb. Unlucky? Sure, SOME. We are also allowing the highest hard hit% in mlb and the second highest line drive %, so “unlucky” only covers so much.
Our HR% and K% both sit at 17th, close enough to call mlb average. Our starters are 4-9 with 6 ND’s and we’re last in QS% (11%). The pen is 4-2 in those 6 ND’s with a 50% save %(4 of 8). The pen has inherited 36 base runners and 10 have scored (28%) which ranks 9th best. The starters really can’t be pointing a finger at the pen, overall.
