This is the latest info from Man Games Lost. The Cardinals are at the far left, tucked under TOR. They are among the teams with the very fewest player games missed due to injury in 2022.

Up to the break, the Cards are still among the lowest six or so teams in terms of injury impact in 2022.

That injury metric does not consider value to the team of those lost injury innings I don’t think. Injuries wiped out our whole rotation except for the 40 year old guy who is 6-7.
Maybe our biomechanics wonks think lefties with a lower arm slot who haven’t been throwing radar gun candy since high school will be more resistant to injury.
Maybe expectations have something to do with it. If your arm or shoulder was a little tired or a little sore in the past, you’d put some analgesic balm on it and press on. You were expecting to pitch and you did. Many times the arm recovered on it’s own over a short period of time. Now, all sorts of red flags go up. I pitched all the way through high school, college, and semi-pro ball. Sure my arm ached at times, but it always came back to normal. Never missed a start.
BC – when you were growing up did you play other sports too? I think making kids specialize by the time they are 10 and keeping travel teams / clubs / training going almost year round grinds on young minds and bodies.
I think playing multiple sports year round is fine. It’s like cross training but that’s not how it works for most promising young athletes these days. They are almost forced to pick a main sport very early and then play that sport all year in order to ‘keep up’.

Any info on Matzx? Maybe he had surgery? With the addition of Montgomery and Quintana that gives us 6 starters not counting Matz and Flaherty. Sounds like those 2 aren’t likely coming back, or in a relief role at best.

Wow, I would have thought the Cardinals were one of the most afflicted teams in baseball. Shows you what the eye test is worth.
In all fairness, Nate, every team’s fans are very familiar with that team’s injuries, but pay less attention to other teams. We are all guilty of it.
That is why I shared this information. No one can complain that injuries derailed the 2022 Cardinals. If anything, they were quite fortunate – and probably won’t be as fortunate in 2023.
The only questions in my mind are this – WHO IS GOING TO SHOW UP INJURED AT THE START OF SPRING TRAINING? AND WHO WILL BE HURT SHORTLY AFTER SPRING TRAINING STARTS?

You see this a lot. Even more in football I think.
Just a thought, but a “games missed” type stat could be even more telling. It could be a stat weighted by player value (expected WAR or something similar?) to truly show how damaging the missed games were, e.g., say next year luck runs very low and Goldy, Arenado and DeLuzio all miss 50 games. Which one of these things is not like the others?
Duh, I made my post above after reading Brian’s reply #204546. After that post I began to read more posts above. Lol, disregard my post now, I thought I was on to something!
