Memphis wins big 12-1. Yepez, Capel, Thomas, and Williams star in the victory. I hope we able to deal Williams for someone useful, as he has been passed on the depth chart by Nootbaar and Burleson.

If we could do as well as Lane Thomas for Lester I would be happy.
First time in a long time the Cardinals won’t have a minor league team finish with a winning record. The organizational depth is atrocious. Their approach in the international market needs to change.
I think the won-loss records for the entire system is an outlier. To me the system looks strong. The Top 30 Prospects look promising with several ‘can’t miss’ players coming up. The pitching depth coming up is questionable, but it’s still too early to tell what we really have there. The drafts have been pretty good especially the 2020 draft. Give it another year.
BHC – there’s some excellent quality, but a lack of quantity.
BCC – That’s why I mentioned organizational depth. There certainly are jewels in the Cards system (Liberatore, Gorman, Herrera, Walker) but once you get outside the Top 10 the pitching drops off a freaking cliff. The pitching depth looks to be a huge problem.
The international strategy has been quantity over highest quality. One can surely debate which approach would be more effective. The major environmental difference in recent years is MLB implementing international spending caps. This restriction means if you swing for the fences on high-dollar 16-year-olds, you have more pressure to be right.

Surely the absence of the short season rosters will have an effect on the international acquisition/development strategy. Players can’t dawdle waiting to physically mature and turn athleticism into baseball skills. High school draftees will have to be sorted more quickly as well.
BHC – I just finished my annual stat spread sheet of all our minor leaguers, and just shook my head looking at the guys who got the most starts for Springfield.
Worst rotation I can ever remember at any level in the Cards system.Someone mentioned that most of the Cards’ affiliates were among if not the youngest rosters in each league. That could well have something to do with the poor team records.
That said, there are some bright spots but we need Flaherty, Hudson, and Libby to be solid because the depth is a little shaky. Guys like Thomas, Pallante and Woodford may be options for a Memphis shuttle, so hopefully they are able to keep warm and have solid results next year.

At Triple-A, that is yes, mainly because the Cardinals sign few AAAA journeymen as roster backfill. Youngest pitchers and tied for youngest hitters.
At Double-A, hitting was youngest. However, Springfield’s pitching tied for the second-oldest in the league. Influx of indy league guys had to have an impact.
At High-A, Peoria’s hitting was second youngest and pitching was tied for youngest.
At Low-A, Palm Beach’s hitting was in the middle, but pitching was youngest.Before getting too excited, I went backward to look at Memphis over time:
2019, youngest hitting and pitching – second place finish.
2018, youngest hitters and pitching in the middle – and they WON the league!
2017, second youngest hitters and youngest pitchers – and they WON the league!So at least at Triple-A, I don’t see 2021 out of the ordinary in terms of youth. But the results were far worse.
I tend to feel the issue is more talent than age.

I tend to feel the issue is more talent than age.
If true it shoots down the ‘young for level’ explanation that some are always throwing out there to rationalize poor results.
With all the pitchers we have in our system, why do we have to bring in guys from independent leagues that are in their mid to late 20s? And watch them get clobbered?
cranny the need for all the scrap heap guys just to fill out the staffs in the upper levels, together with the poor results, says to me there was a huge problem with acquisition/development a few years ago. The pitiful results posted by the lower levels says the problem has not been fixed. Based upon how those lower levels did, there is no good reason to think we will not need a bunch of scrap heap guys to fill out the upper levels in the years ahead.
BB – Maybe it’s not so bad. With only 4 teams now above the Florida Rookie level, that would be 20 starters. And we have the following who may have some promise who are in the pipeline –
