I agree we are likely to have some that work out. But given in season attrition there is going to be a lack of depth that will have us dumpster diving for a few years I think, The relievers are in the same shape and I think throwing strikes is really an issue there. I think there was the belief that if we used velocity and spin rate and such as a filter, we could make pitchers out of what we acquired. Ended up with a lot of guys who either couldn’t get it over the plate or got pounded when they did. Or blew out their arm.

How do guys who have had good control in college all of the sudden start walking guys as a pro? Working on new pitches taught by the coaches? Trying to throw secondary pitches with 3 balls in the count for the 1st time?
Nolan Gorman’s late season slump dropped his OPS under .800 and his wRC+ to just above league average at 106. Still solid for a 21 year old, but he has some room to grow. I still think he’ll be a streaky hitter in the majors a la Tyler O’Neill, only without quite as much power in all likelihood. I don’t like the comp because I’ve never liked the player much but Mike Moustakas seems like a good one.
Gorman was drafted for his power, 25. Google “Gorman home run king again”. He was the number one high school All Star power hitter in the country several years in a row. No reason he can’t come close to duplicating what O’Neill has done.
Bc, I’m aware that Gorman has really good power. I think he will be a 30-35 HR guy at the MLB level…like Moustakas was a couple of times. O’Neill has shown us that his power is quite prodigious, though. If he’d not been injured he could have been pushing 45 HRs this year. His 142 games played at Memphis have yielded 49 HRs and 110 RBIs. Gorman has great power, O’Neills is elite.
Anyway…my main point is that he will probably be a bit streaky as he’s been every year in the minors. But the hot streaks should be a lot of fun for us fans.
We badly need a left swinging hitter with pop in the lineup. Gorman has a lot fewer PAs in the AA/AAA levels than O’Neill had when he jumped to MLB and I am not convinced Gorman is ready. There is also the question of of whether he will have major trouble with the shift being a left handed batter. Still, if he has a good spring I would not be surprised to see him in STL very early. Most especially if there is a DH next year.

That’s a fair point, bc. Gorman did seem to improve the K rate at Memphis. If that’s for real, he could be a true star at the big league level.
Can’t wait for a MOTO of Carlson, Goldschmidt, O’Neill, Arenado, and Gorman. With Yepez and Burleson alternated in the DH slot.

That’s where adding a guy like Seager for leadoff would be so huge. The lineup would be quite formidable for several years. It would cost but could be very worth it.
cranny, what positions would you see Edman and Gorman playing to be in the everyday lineup together?
