I doesn’t matter how Waino looks or who gives us the better chance. I’m sure I don’t need to tell anybody how many reasons there are.
I think you are off-base here. Wainwright is going to be better than Woodford. To suggest otherwise would mean he would have an ERA higher than 6.05, FIP higher than 7.37, WHIP higher than 1.707 and fWAR worse than -0.4 through four starts.
It would not be the path of least resistance; it would be the best move for the team. Jake can either return to the pen (a role that he did well in last season) or keep starting in Memphis and jockey for another chance to start with StL.
Wainwright is not going to save the world, nor is anyone expecting that. But if you truly believe that he won’t be a step up and aren’t just spouting off, I will gladly take that bet.
April 24, 2023 at 11:23 am #217539All of the starters have been mostly terrible. Underperforming reasonable expectation. Including Woodford. Maybe Wainwright will come back and be the exception. Maybe he will not have a dead arm or a mechanics issue. My point is that it doesn’t matter if he does or not. I believe that is a realistic take.
April 24, 2023 at 4:55 pm #217556Of course, Wainwright will get a chance to prove himself. That should go without saying. Even you would have to agree that is the best course of action.
And he will be given more time than a rookie would, for example. But if he puts up a 6-plus ERA over a decent period, the team will have to look at rotation alternatives, even though his name is Wainwright. Bob Gibson finished his career in relief. It could happen with Waino, too.
But are the odds of him struggling better or worse than him pitching decently? Seems every glass is half-empty until proven to be half full…
