A good trade is when both teams benefit. Looks like that’s already happened with Monty-Bader.
A great trade is when the Cards fleece the cubs, like when they traded Doug Clemens for Jack Spring. You might recall Broglio and Brock were also thrown in on that trade.
A short list of Cardinal team BA’s in post-season fiascos that I’d like to forget…
1985 WS; .185 team BA…Tito Landrum led all Redbirds with 9 hits and a .360 BA.
2004 WS; .190 team BA…Larry Walker had 5 hits and led all Redbirds with a .357 BA. Couple up that team .190 BA with a team ERA of 6.09 and I’m a little surprised Ferdie Pacheco didn’t throw in the towel and stop the fight…
2019 NLCS; .130 team BA…I’d have to look it up to be certain, but as I recall it, all of the 8 regular position players on that 2019 post-season roster were named Paul Dejong…
I have never been a big Dusty Baker fan because his Cubs and Reds teams seemed overly feisty against the Cardinals. They always seemed to be looking for a fight.
However, that doesn’t mean he isn’t a good manager. The numbers say that he is. He has been a manager for 25 seasons, 12 of those seasons went to the playoffs, one NL Pennant, and one AL Pennant (two wins away from a second). His overall record is 2093-190, which is a .539 win percentage. He has done everything but win a world series but there have been other longtime managers who didn’t win it all. Gene Mauch comes to mind.
Dusty Baker is an idiot. That toothpick, his sweat/arm bands, those stupid gloves. You name it, the guy is an idiot.
Rats…Well, the toothpick comes in handy after a bag of peanuts and the sweat bands are almost a must have for that hot and sweltering Houston humidity, but yeah, I don’t know what’s up with those close fitting gloves. Maybe Dusty’s a master safecracker during the offseason?
The Astros are now 5-0 in the ’22 post-season and I can’t detect a discernable weakness in any area of their ballclub. Just so long as they keep an adequate supply of serviceable toothpicks, they may possibly run the table…
gscottar…Yeah, Dusty’s an odd sort, but you have to concede that he’s an extremely experienced and venerable baseball guy who’s been around for what seems like forever. He’s won wherever he’s landed, but just hasn’t broken through to take home the big prize as a field manager. I think that changes this year. Speaking of experience and WS championships, Bochy just latched on in Texas for a 3 year stint. Maybe one of these days the Redbirds will take on a proven manager again like they did with Herzog and LaRussa. Those two guys worked out pretty well. Practical experience has a way of producing success.
gscottar…Haha! I doubt it. If Dusty has the testicular fortitude to take on Tony LaRussa, imagine what he’d do to John Mozeliak. Johnny would have to hire a private security detail…
Doug Eddings doesn’t get talked up enough as a terrible umpire. What was he looking at? Just awful that he has an impact on a LCS. Thankfully the challenge system can correct some of his mistakes.
Segura reaches out with a defensive swing and loops one into the OF for a 2 RBI base hit. The swing he took looked identical to the one he featured for a 2 RBI base hit while facing Pallante.
1td, an obvious dropped ball at 2B by Segura that Eddings said was an out due to the drop being on the transfer for the throw to complete a DP. It wasn’t even close. The reason I was sensitive to it is Eddings has a history with the Padres (google eddings padres bad umpire). Or to get a wider variety of his incompetence, just google eddings bad umpire, e.g., he really stuck it to the Blue Jays in maybe the worst umped game this year. A shame goons like him get this level of assignment.
Eddings also has a little history with the Cards. He tossed Carpenter one time when Carp was on the bench. Arenado was batting at the time. Another play that I’m sure you remember was against the cubs, on the wild play the umps screwed up an infield fly rule (Arenado didn’t make the catch). This was during the long winning streak. Shildt got ejected by Bill Miller, but it was Eddings who screwed the whole thing up by calling the runner out trying to advance to 2B, then allowing him to go back safely even though Edman (or somebody) tagged him out. He ruled the play dead, mostly because he screwed it up. It was asinine.
EuroDandy…Yeah, I missed it. Must have been getting a snack. Didn’t hear Smoltz or the other guy say anything, so I’m assuming the play didn’t affect the score, but sometimes just the extra pitches or the turning over of the order can have a subtle effect on the game later on. I guess it was a play that couldn’t be challenged? At any rate, thanks for the heads-up.
It was challenged and was an obvious overturn. That’s why I said thankfully some of his mistakes can be corrected. He does his worst work behind the plate and hasn’t been there yet. I assume he’ll get the plate in Game 5 or 6. Lay some $$$$ on PHI that game, lol.
EuroDandy…Well, that’s good that they got it right. Yeah, no matter who he is, the HPU can have an enormous effect on an entire game. All you can do is hope for the best with some of these guys. I almost never blame the outcome of a game on a HPU’s ball and strike calls, but it can be excruciating watching some of these ever changing strike zones. The HPU is crucial.
Both the Padres and Yankees are now placed under the gun, but with a 7 game series still have some air. I’m sure everyone remembers when these LCS were best of 5. Those were some gut wrenchers. I recall a good one in the 1980 NLCS between the Astros and Phillies that went the full 5 games. Old Howard Cosell and Keith Jackson teamed up with Don Drysdale for the TV broadcast on ABC, and with the possible exception of the ’76 ALCS between the Yankees and Royals which also went the full 5 games, it was the most heart pounding best of 5 game LCS that I can remember.
Yankees better be ready to play and win today. The death knell of 0-3 will ring out if Houston wins this ballgame.
Yankees set to lose again. Astros pitching is good but not that good. They are about as feeble as the Cardinals were against Phillies.

An ugly postseason for Matt Carpenter. He has 10 plate appearances with 1 flyout and 9 strikeouts. I’ve seen a couple swings where I thought his head might spin off his neck. Also, Judge hearing the boos.
EuroDandy…Yeah, in addition to being an easy out, he can’t even put the baseball into play. Bader’s hit, but has been horrible in CF.
