Thanks. I had seen that photo once before but it had been awhile. I have never heard DeWitt talk about it. I wonder if he remembers much about that day?

Man, these are so cool. For you youngsters out there, 1962 was a great year to be a kid. Little league ball, baseball cards on Post cereal boxes as well as the Topps bubble gum packs.

Plenty of familiar players in those two clips. On the infield warmup it looks like the veteran Red was filling in at second base for Julian Javier. The remaining members are Bill White, Julio Gotay and Ken Boyer.

Looked like the Mets lefty in the first clip is Al Jackson, with I believe Larry Jackson going for us. No mistaking Curt Simmons in the second clip with that motion. Hank Aaron hated hitting off Simmons. Stan was in there of course, and I believe Richie Ashburn for the Mets.

Now that’s cool. Anytime you can get a shot of the Rajah in Busch, it’s cool. Not to mention the New York Mets debuting. 😀 And Casey was there, plus somewhere were Bob Gibson and Bill White. You have baseball from the 19-teens to today really, as Gibby and White are still visible around the game from time to time.

This is not Cardinals-related, but with the passing of Al Kaline, I thought he should be remembered. He often said he chose no. 6 because he idolized Stan.

I wasn’t really sure where to put this, but the Baseball Digest archives could be some good auxiliary reading during this downtime.

(SI’s back issues are available, too, via the SI Vault, but I would not assume the new owners will leave it free forever.)

The only guy I could pick out for sure in those 1930 clips was a brief view of Lefty Grove throwing a pitch. Great stuff though.

I am pretty sure that was Jim Bottomley making a play at first.
