Oliver – if his drunk driving had resulted in the injury or worse the death of another person then I’d say put him in jail and throw away the key.
Since it didn’t and he was lucky I d say he should permanently lose his DL but not his job as long as he can get to work.
I’m really at a loss as to why you sent a snyde comment my way to begin with.
Either you didn’t understand my position on the subject or you and I will not agree. I really don’t care which it us at this point, how about just drop it with me and move on.

Right, should only punish actions that could cause harm if they actually cause harm. If he shot a gun at someone and missed then he should just be slapped on the wrist and told NO! I agree causing harm to others should be met more strictly, but his actions are not acceptable, especially being the third. He clearly hasn’t learned what he’s doing is a huge problem to society.
I am Happy tô see some support for seperating work and private activity. I have long argued this. I feel the same way about domestic violence or other crimes. In Danny Mac’s case though he might lose his job even without Boeing cancelled tô missing time on the job for court/jail.

Correct. Which is why i said he should lose his driver’s license.
Some jail time and certainly probation are in order.
But regarding his employment – I don’t think they should fire him ad long as he is doing a good job.

If any of you on this thread calling for Danny’s resignation / firing have ever, even one time, gotten behind the wheel of a car while under the influence of any kind altering drug be it alcohol, weed, etc then please resign from your job and hold yourselves to your own standards.
Just because you did not get caught does not mean you didn’t endanger other people’s lives.

I understand why folks want to share their points of view, but all sides have seemingly been presented. By continuing to debate, I don’t think anyone is going to change anyone else’s mind while the discussion strays away from why we are here. The Cardinals will do whatever they decide to do. Like everything else, some will agree and others will disagree.
ZTR…It’s not my view that McLaughlin should be fired from his job, but that’s what’s going to happen. In addition to liking him as the Redbird TV announcer, he always impressed me as a more than reasonably intelligent guy and I’m certain he knew the risks he posed to other motorists along with the risks to both his job and espeacially his freedom when he got behind the wheel of his car after taking on alcohol. This isn’t his first brush with the legal system. He knows that right now, retaining his primary means of employment is the least of his worries. As to your question, the answer is yes. Many times in the past I’ve driven when I had no business doing so. Thankfully, I never hurt someone or got caught behind the wheel after taking on several drinks. Back in the cave man days, it was fairly common to meet up with the fellas at a local tavern after work or on the weekends and watch a ballgame, tell tall tales, and enjoy a few beers and then get in the truck and drive home. I genuinely believe that at one time in the distant past, it was a somewhat socially acceptable practice, but those days are long gone. Society now views that sort of behavior as entirely unacceptable and won’t tolerate it. Since about my late 40’s to early 50’s, I all but stopped drinking. Not at all as a result of any moral integrity on my part, but simply because it took me that long to figure out that I was dumb enough without it and getting too old to endure the dreaded hangover…I still enjoy a beer or two once or twice in a blue moon, but it’s out in the garage or on the patio after cutting the grass or performing some maintainence on my motorcycles. I tell my fascinating stories to one of our dogs and not only do they not interrupt me, but they also believe them…At any rate, I don’t think Dan McLaughlin belongs in jail, nor do I feel as though he should be fired from his job. But that’s not for me to decide. I genuinely hope he fights through his difficulties, but he’s got some really tough outs to face.

I am not sure what steps Dan had to go through the court system but I would say it’s very well possible his previous 2 DUI that he had gone through all the obligations. Persistent driving while intoxicated is a new one for me. Never heard of that before especially 10 years after his 2nd dui you would assume he gone through what he needed to. I guess that’s a Missouri thing.

I am all about second chances and maybe even third chances. But fourth chances? The people running an organization also have to think about the credibility of their organization don’t they? The company I work for has given many employees second chances after mistakes were made but eventually ties are cut if the behavior becomes chronic.

For those of you who don’t know, addictions like alcohol addiction never go away. You never get ‘cured’. It takes a conscious effort to say ‘no’ each and every day.
You can be clean for 10-15-20 years but its always there; always lurking.

Well I definitely agree with your first point. His DL should be revoked for many years before some innocent driver or pedestrian gets killed. I assume he can afford an Uber.
As for him losing his job, that isn’t my decision to make. I don’t like to see anyone lose their job. All I am saying is that if you look at it from an employer’s point of view they also have a responsibility to look out for their own image and interests. Employees have been terminated for a lot less.

I enjoyed McLaughlin’s play by play on the TV broadcasts, but you simply knew that his time as a Redbird announcer was over. He built up a good career over almost 25 years, but bad things happen in a big hurry. I’ll miss him during the Cardinal games, but right now his broadcasting career is the least of his worries.
I feel bad for Dan, worse for his family, due to the addiction and embarrassment. But as for the job loss, you can call me a cold-hearted so-and-so, but when a wealthy person loses their job I couldn’t care less.
I worked for two different companies where corporate takeovers/layoffs took place, so I saw first-hand what happened when middle class people suddenly lost jobs for nothing more than wrong place/wrong time. That’s where my sympathy goes, every single drop of it. Multimillionaire coaches and broadcasters and others? Uh, no.
Sad for Dan. He was a great historian on all things Redbirds (except prospects). Sad for all of us in a John Donne sense.
I hate seeing anything bad happening to anyone in the Cardinal family. I hope he pushes through this and comes out the other side in good shape.

Been broadcasting at local level all my life and Danny Mac had a great job. But I’m not sure that he has made millions of $$$$. Only a guess…Given the public nature of the job, the Cards’ desire to move in a different direction is not surprising. As for Danny Mac, sometimes when a person loses something that is a life treasure for themselves, they respond by accelerating in one direction or the other. I hope it’s the right direction for D Mac.
