If the organization chooses to have Pinder skip SC, the Chiefs could be looking at an OF of Hurst-Pinder-Denton. The INF could be some combination of Mendoza-YGonzalez-Kirtley-Figuera-Lopes-Yepez plus Cs Ortega and/or JLopez, that looks like a pretty good MWL team. I’m not too sure of what the rotation is going to look like but Castano-Oviedo-Summerville is a good start. This could be a championship contending team.

A new name to many is #36 on The Cardinal Nation’s top 50 prospect countdown, a teen-aged third baseman with power potential who became our 2017 Gulf Coast League Cardinals Player of the Year, Elehuris Montero. ($)

I’d like to see Montero, who won’t be 20 until Aug, get a season under his belt at Johnson City. The organization has made a few mistakes by pushing younger players. He can skip SC and start out at Peoria in ’19 at age 20, still young for A ball. Montero is a big kid at 6’3″, if he hasn’t added an inch or two. We will need to find the proper position for him going forward. If he can improve on his infield play, great. If not, he may be better suited for LF. Don’t forget 3B Mendoza is 21 and 2-1/2 levels ahead of him.
Certainly both are two prospects that need to be kept an eye on.

There’s a wide range of opinion of Montero. IMO, he is overrated at #26, but underrated at #47. 36ish seems to be fair, good call BW. I put him in the same grouping at #36. A good year in the mountain league will push him higher during the season.

I believe Montero signed in Sept of 2014 and I believe that means he will be Rule 5 eligible after next season. I think a player who is going to be Rule 5 eligible needs to play in full season ball if at all possible so he can be properly evaluated.

The Cardinal Nation’s top 50 prospect countdown reaches #33 with a right-handed pitcher who dominated at Class-A Peoria in his first full-season before finding the going tougher at high-A Palm Beach, Mike O’Reilly. ($)

O’Reilly as a 21 year-old at GCL-Cards in ’16 was about as average a reliever as could be expected of a 27 round pick that year.
Now ’17 was different for him… at least two+ months of it. His season started at EST but he got a call to report to Peoria in mid-April. His 1.29 WHIP wasn’t impressive, but on May 9th he was inserted into the rotation replacing the struggling Ronnie Williams. I remember being surprised that, at the time, he would even get a spot start. O’Reilly made the most of it by immediately dominating in 9 of his 12 starts with the Chiefs. On July 10th he had the best pitched game in the entire organization all season… a stunner at Cedar Rapids, a 9 inning 3-0 shutout and received a GS of 104. Each week I couldn’t wait for his next start. It was that eye-opener got him up to Adv-A Palm Beach, where he returned to mediocrity, and somewhat of a disappointment to me. Where did the magic go to?

You cannot take away O’Reilly’s mystical summer of ’17. However, has his career peeked? He hasn’t the normal stature for a starter at 5’11” and might find himself back in the ‘pen again at some point. I don’t have a negative opinion of O’Reilly but my optimism waned by the time August finished up. Was he just too good at Peoria?

I’m inclined to feel that he is overrated at #33 and may belong in the 38-42 range. As it stands, he is ahead of some quality talent. A return to June/July ’17 for Mike would be great for the organization, but I’m still scratching my head at his mysterious turnaround on 5-9-17. IMO, almost unbelievable, a motion picture type story. Getting back that success may be very difficult.

I am especially proud of today’s analysis, anchored by Derek Shore. The no. 32-ranked prospect in The Cardinal Nation’s top 50 countdown is a center fielder who performed strongly in the 2017 Appalachian League at the age of 19, Wadye Ynfante. ($)

The Cardinal Nation’s #31 prospect in our annual top 50 countdown is a promising right-handed pitcher whose career was interrupted just one step away from the majors. How will Daniel Poncedeleon’s battle back from a serious head injury conclude? ($)

I’ve like the #s that Ynfante has put up since his DSL days. He may have some trouble with the competition of Hurst-Pinder-Sierra-Mercado all ahead of his timeline plus Machado on his heals, but they should be looking over their shoulders for him. It should be noted that Johnson City tanked when Ynfante was injured at the end of their season. I put Wadye at #27.

I made sure to keep Poncedeleon at the same ranking of #31 when he was injured… it seemed fair to me and the right thing to do. His injury was upsetting to me because DP was off and away on his best season… and the way this event took place (a batted ball), pretty damn sad. Congratulations to Danny and all those voters for having faith in this guy to return to his ’17 form.

Afraid that Ponce is one that we could lose in the Rule 5

I agree with you Sooner. At first take, this may seem odd, but I hope it does not happen for Poncedeleon’s sake. He would have to complete his recovery in a new organization while in the majors and that could put a lot of additional pressure on him. Business does not always work this way, but from my distant vantage point, I hope he is left alone and the Cards can give him all the runway he needs to get back to where he was – just getting established as a Triple-A starter. Then, they can go from there. Pushing him into an MLB bullpen now as a Rule 5 pick seems premature and risky for both his recovery and development. Yet, the cost for another organization to take a shot on him is very low, making him a good gamble.

The Cardinal Nation’s top 50 prospect countdown for 2018 stops at #30 with a former LSU shortstop who began slowly but came on well with Peoria of the Class-A Midwest League in his Cardinals debut, Kramer Robertson. FREE article!

I read BW’s take on Robertson twice because I wasn’t quite sure how KR’s defensive prowess was transferring to pro ball. I raised my interest level in KR when Weaver was taken off the MLB top-30 prospect list in Aug. and replaced by Robertson at #30. That added some credibility to KR’s solid July numbers which continued into Aug. However, working against him was that he hadn’t showed up on any of the CN’s top-50, even on the 8-15-17 list. That would have had him following Sexton, Plummer and Williams.

It may be coincidental that the Community also placed him at #30, but being #31 & #32 by our resident experts makes the Community’s selection seem fair enough.

In the 21-25 round Black Hills was the first to put up Robertson at #25. In the next round only 5 selectors included KR but it was enough to squeak him in at #30. Entering the top 30, the voting was usually very close with just a few points separating the top 5 in each round. I usually add the 3 in front and 3 behind a prospect and consider that to be his grouping… until we reach the top 10.

At #29 in The Cardinal Nation’s annual top 50 prospect countdown is a second-year pitcher who showed good progress in his first season following Tommy John surgery, Sam Tewes. ($)

What’s impressive about Tewes is that he reached Adv-A ball in his first pro season. It’s like he didn’t miss an entire season at all. Not only did he move up to Palm Beach from State College, he entered the rotation there and in Aug. pitched to a tune of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.09. He was going deep into games and had two games with 70+ game scores.
When he was sent up to PB the Peoria rotation included Hicks-Oxnevad-Parra-Shew-Warner, Tewes was the one that was promoted after just one start there. Once at PB he actually improved on some #s from his earlier days at SC. It will be interesting to see where he is placed in ’18. There’s a crowded field in the race for Springfield’s rotation, if he makes it, the 6’5″ 200 pounder will be ahead of everyone’s expectations.

One minor correction, 14NyquisT. Hicks had already moved up to Palm Beach three weeks before Tewes.

Even more daunting for Ynfante is the immediate logjam at A/A+ ball. Carlson, Fieldler, Fennell, Plummer, Pinder, Hurst, Denton and now Woodman would all be splitting time in some way.

I don’t know how it shakes out right now. We have O’Neill, Bader, Sierra, and Garcia in AAA. (And Schafer)

My guess is Woodman (due to age) bumps up to AA and plays alongside Arozarena (?)and Mercado (??), both of whom should be in AAA too. Spitz and Drake are in between A+/AA too.

Then Carlson moves up to Palm Beach, but they have a lot of backfill with Billings, Bautista, Thomas, and Jackson there too.

Then the A ball crew of Pinder, Hurst, Ynfante, Fieldler, and Fennell.

The #28-ranked prospect in The Cardinal Nation’s annual top 50 countdown is a second baseman who re-established his prospect momentum after an injury-plagued 2016. Read why Darren Seferina needs to remain the best-kept secret in the Cardinals system. ($)

At #27 in The Cardinal Nation’s annual top 50 prospect countdown is a fast-rising shortstop who did everything well as he moved from Peoria all the way up to Memphis in his first full season, Tommy Edman ($).

The CN’s May top-50 had Edman slightly ahead of Seferina, but by Aug. Seferina #27 had passed Edman #35. Both of their stock went up on Sept. 6 when Alvarez was sent to PHI for Nicasio. The difference between the two is very slim and could easily be reversed. In the 26-30 voting by the Community, both got strong support (Edman was on 9 lists and Seferina 8). By Aug, Edman first showed up on MLB’s top-30 at #26. Sef couldn’t be too far behind but not included in the top-30.

Does Edman project as a 2B? If so, he still will be able to play SS. A lot has to do with the players ahead of him on the depth chart. If DeJong is a long-term SS solution, Edman probably moves over to 2B or will be considered a utilty type. That would mean that there will be direct competition between he and Seferina for that role. Presently, Edman may be a nose ahead because of his SS flexibility.

Seferina will turn 24 next month, Edman is a year and change younger. The two are built similarly, about 5′-10″/175.
