A’s receive $70 million for crying poor
According to The Athletic, the A’s will be receiving right around $70 million in revenue sharing now that they are back at a 100% share, thanks to the low attendance figures the team has been pumping out with the announced relocation to Las Vegas.
If you are given $270 million, could you run a profitable franchise?
LOL. This is beyond absurd. You simply don’t understand finance.
Careful LA. This isn’t personal. I just don’t like that you’re speaking in absolutes. You don’t really know anything because you’re looking through the same veil as the rest of us. You may be 100% incorrect. It’s ok to speculate, but don’t use language like you know something to be true when you don’t.
And besides, if you knew me, you probably wouldn’t make such a statement like you did above.
I doubt that the Marlins are losing money with their miniscule payroll but the bigger problem is that their should not be ANY MLB teams in the state of Florida. The Marlins and Rays hav never drawn well no matter who the owner was. The only time the Rays have a decent crowd is when the Yankees or Red Sox are in town and 80% of the fans in attendance are for the visiting team. It is hard to have a local fan base when so many of people in the area are transplants who have allegiance to the city they were originally from. MLB should move both the Marlins and Rays elsewhere and stick to spring training.
I’m surprised the Dbacks don’t have this same problem since most of the Phoenix area is also made of transplants. In fact there was grumbling last year that their owner was considering relocation but it seems that talk has died down recently.
I find it incredibly odd that the Marlins attracted a nice gate of over 2.3M in their WS championship season of ’97 and a paltry 1.3M for their second WS championship only 6 years later in ’03. If there’s any rhyme or reason for the stark contrast of those two numbers, I can’t find any.
The best explanation I can come up with is that after winning that WS in ’97 their ownership gutted the roster and decided to tank. They went from winning 92 games in ’97 to winning 54 games in ’98. Their fans apparently didn’t appreciate that approach thus the attendance dropped. They have not hit that 2.3M mark ever since.
The best thing I can say about the ’03 team is that they prevented the Cubs from reaching the WS. Them and Mr. Bartman of course.
