RHP Jack Flaherty (6-5, 4.27) vs. RHP Josiah Gray (6-7, 3.41)
BSM // KMOX // WIJR
(and Bally Sports South/Southwest Extra)July 16, 2023 at 6:09 am #227999The Pirates have been fading and we are now only 2 games behind them, so climbing out of the basement is a realistic possibility. Then we could look at overtaking the Cubs, who are 2.5 games ahead of the Pirates. But we will have to see what happens at the trade deadline. Mo has kind of sent a mixed message. We are not waving the white flag on this season, but deadline activity will be aimed at helping set us up for 2024, so we kind of are. But whatever, it is possible to finish in less embarrassing circumstances by not being in last place.
July 16, 2023 at 9:14 am #228009You never know what you’re gonna see.
I think both of the division and WC3 spots are out of reach due to the number of teams we have to climb over.

ParticipantFans seem to be feeling better about the team since expectations have been lowered to a fourth pl;ace finish. We have six teams remaining with the Pirates so catching them is a possibility but It will be difficult with our patchwork rotation. Of course some of this is tongue in cheek. Onward and upward die-hards friends.
July 16, 2023 at 10:19 am #228019This season is out the window, but we have been playing at a .500 clip for good awhile now, so that is about our level of ability. Inconsistent pitching, both starting and relief, has kept us from being a “contenda”. And the defense has thrown away a couple of games.
It’s too bad we can’t work something out with Montgomery, as he is exactly what we need. But he will surely try the free agent market and will be dealt for maybe a potential younger version of himself. Jack probably goes as well – maybe making his last start for us and auditioning for another club today.
July 16, 2023 at 11:10 am #2280301. Brendan Donovan (L) DH
2. Paul Goldschmidt (R) 1B
3. Lars Nootbaar (L) CF
4. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
5. Jordan Walker (R) RF
6. Alec Burleson (L) LF
7. Nolan Gorman (L) 2B
8. Paul DeJong (R) SS
9. Andrew Knizner (R) CJuly 16, 2023 at 11:21 am #228032It’s too bad we can’t work something out with Montgomery, as he is exactly what we need.
Trade him now for pitching prospects at AA or AAA, then resign him in the offseason.
July 16, 2023 at 11:54 am #228036With the offseason a distant dream, I just want to enjoy more offense like last night, and perhaps they could even cut back a little on the errors to provide more fun.
July 16, 2023 at 12:15 pm #228037Din din today will be a couple of hamburgers on my little grill. Then some Turkey Hill Vanilla Bean ice cream. Then on the couch with Whitey Herdog for this one. Along with a couple of 7×50 Palma Real cigars for the game. Might even tune in to the first couple of innings of the Brewers and Reds at Crosley Field as well.

July 16, 2023 at 12:22 pm #228039Ironically two of the best Cardinal defensive plays of the year were made last night by Burleson and Walker. I gladly eat crow for all of the negative things I have said about their defense. Seriously, if the two of them can become average to slightly above average defenders that would be a huge development for this club in the future. Kudos to Willie McGee for his tutelage.
July 16, 2023 at 12:23 pm #228040And speaking of the Reds they have lost three straight games, all to Milwaukee. The scores of those games were:
1-0 Brewers
1-0 Brewers
3-0 BrewersThe Reds haven’t scored a run in at least 27 innings. I wonder if they will dent the plate today? They got one hit yesterday.
July 16, 2023 at 12:23 pm #228041Two games in a row with Contreras not behind the plate. I still think this team is better off with him not catching. Let him DH and be the backup 1B.

jj-cf-stlParticipantOllie followed the L-R-L stagger for four batters, but then he went way off script.
July 16, 2023 at 12:50 pm #228048Burleson and Gorman both got big hits last night off of a lefty. Maybe it is recency bias.

July 16, 2023 at 12:59 pm #228051I’m thinking we could have one valiant run in us before calling this season a wrap. Let’s call this one 5-3 Birds with Mr. Walker finding the cheap seats with bat in hand.
You’re right with the Reds bats falling silent vs Milwaukee, Rat. What’s with India hitting the skids? I had thought he might be immune to long slumps, but he’s proving me wrong. And what ice cream company calls itself “Turkey Hill”, Rat? They are both great by themselves, but as a combo……not so much. And thanks to the esteemed Scotty and our baseball expert extraordinaire BicycleMike, for their words of concern in Friday’s game thread. I consider you both as friends, gentlemen.
July 16, 2023 at 1:05 pm #228052I still think this team is better off with him not catching. Let him DH and be the backup 1B.
I’ve seen it said that the Cubs won in 2016 will Contreras, but that is hardly the case. Montero was still the primary catcher all year, although Conreras did see a lot of action.
It is really hard to imagine being competative with that defense behind the plate, no matter if he produces better at the plate. It is really looking like a fundamental mistake by the FO not paying enough attention to the defense aspect, especially with a lengthy contract.
July 16, 2023 at 1:25 pm #228056Goldy with RISP here in the first.
Nuthin. Maybe just get the runner over to third with one out. Better than nuthin.
July 16, 2023 at 1:31 pm #228057To expand on the Goldy AB. Anything besides grounding it to the left side ahead of the runner is acceptable. In the air, on the ground. Just has to be to the right side. If you can’t do that, then bunt. Don’t pull a gounder to the left side.
So the leadoff double ends up wasted.
July 16, 2023 at 1:39 pm #228058That liner near the line in right looked like it was sinking and/or fading, or maybe knuckling on Walker but he tracked it and made the running catch. Not super gracefull looking, and not a super hard catch at this level, but solid play out there.
July 16, 2023 at 1:58 pm #228061Flaherty is looking good so far, despite the potato.
July 16, 2023 at 1:59 pm #228062Jack looks like a guy pitching for a contract and killin it. I wonder if Mo is getting the jitters.
July 16, 2023 at 2:01 pm #228063Let him DH and be the backup 1B.
Just end it.
Eat the money, send Conteras on his way.
Our DH of the future is Walker.
July 16, 2023 at 2:06 pm #228065Well, decided to line the DeWitt’s pockets today and come to the game. Stadium no more than half full if that, despite what they may claim for attendance. Looks like a Tuesday night crowd, not Sunday afternoon. Cards are getting on base, but then floundering. Walker’s big chance here w/2 on.
July 16, 2023 at 2:11 pm #228067The runner on second with Goldy up is another reason not to have him hit second. You don’t want him giving himself up to move the runner over. You want him to let it rip and the chips fall where they may.
If Noot was hitting second there, then you have him look for something to pull, and if he gets a hit great. But you are not too worried about him missing out on cranking one. Goldy you want cranking all day long.
