cardsfan64ParticipantRHP Kyle Leahy has been selected from Memphis (AAA).
LHP Matthew Liberatore has been optioned to Memphis.
Leahy will make his Major League debut with his first appearance. He will wear uniform no. 64. pic.twitter.com/I02IeJwZE8

July 6, 2023 at 3:07 pm #226936Liberatore now has ‘bust’ and ‘Cardinals got fleeced’ written all over him.
It’s a shame because a whole lot of people were counting on him to really good. He’s not nor does it appear he ever will be.
July 6, 2023 at 3:11 pm #226937Kyle Leahy is 3-3 with a 4.06 era at Memphis and a lifetime minor league ERA of 5.33.
This just screams promotion to the bigs, lol lol.
This must be the best we’ve got – wow what does that say about the organization?
July 6, 2023 at 3:12 pm #226938I agree with you guys in regards to leadership matters. It most certainly does. Every good organization has a good leader. And I agree that Marmol certainly doesn’t come across as a dynamic leader. He is young, inexperienced, and seems to be grasping for straws. He also led this team to 93 victories last year, which most people either can’t explain or don’t want to try. Maybe it was because of Molina and Maddux I don’t know. However, I will maintain until the bitter end that Marmol is not 100% responsible for this debacle. This is not a playoff caliber roster.
The offense is good enough. We have a team OPS of .754, which is 5th best in the NL. You can win with an offense like that.
But to put it plainly, I have never seen a worse Cardinal pitching staff in my life. Our team ERA is .469, which is 12th in the NL. The ERA for our starters is .496, which is 13th in the NL.
What manager could win with pitching like that? Perhaps a different manager or pitching coach could squeeze a little more blood out of the turnip but not enough I am afraid. This pitching staff is horrid and it absolutely falls squarely on the shoulders of the front office. The manager doesn’t build the roster! Many people on this board and many sports columnists repeatedly said all winter that this team was short of pitching and the front office did absolutely zilch to improve it. The only addition of significance was Contreras and he can’t pitch.
So blasting Marmol daily may be a good venting tool but he isn’t the only leader in this organization. Leadership starts at the top of the food chain and the people above him have shown zero leadership with giving him the tools he needs to be successful. Zero.
July 6, 2023 at 3:15 pm #226940I was counting on him to be good, but he never gave me the slightest indication to think that he would be. He’s looked the same in ’23 as he did in ’22. Maybe that’ll change someday, but from the time he emerged in the Big Leagues he’s been a lefty that gets slapped around a lot.
July 6, 2023 at 3:37 pm #226942Leahy is the best we’ve got and I wish him all the luck in the world.
The covid season interrupted his development path, but in general, he’s had troubles with allowing too much traffic. This year in AAA is his first as a releiver, but the issue is still the same, too much traffic, hits and walks.
The bar is low right now, so maybe he can help. Anyway, it will be fun to see a guy make his debut.
July 6, 2023 at 3:43 pm #226943Although he’s certainly an accomplice, I don’t think many people at all have made the claim that the Cardinal manager is 100% responsible for the rapid deterioration of this team, but he’s the patsy and should have taken the fall more than a month ago. I’ll add that he’s certainly expedited the decay and exacerbated the degree of failure with countless demonstrations of utter disregard for common logic and reason and an obvious lack of sound judgement. Johnny isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, so the only thing you can really hope for is that he finally comes to the conclusion that the continued presense of the current Cardinal manager is no longer serving any useful purpose and can only diminish his own comfortable standing with Billy Jr. In my view, that’s the solitary scenario that will compel him to abort his stubborn refusal to sack the Cardinal manager.
July 6, 2023 at 3:56 pm #226944Nobody knows how Liberatore’s development would have gone without the lost covid year, but his results have never aligned with the hype. Pointing that out has always been a waste of time. Unless he gets traded, next spring he will again be on the short list of rotation candidate. It just exemplifies where we are and why.
July 6, 2023 at 4:05 pm #2269451. Brendan Donovan (L) DH
2. Lars Nootbaar (L) LF
3. Nolan Arenado (R) 3B
4. Willson Contreras (R) C
5. Nolan Gorman (L) 2B
6. Jordan Walker (R) RF
7. Alec Burleson (L) 1B
8. Paul DeJong (R) SS
9. Dylan Carlson (S) CFI know, lets give Walker a mirror image of what he’s been seeing day in and day out for about a month now, that should help. The wall is back on your left again, big fella.
July 6, 2023 at 4:07 pm #226946You can have all of the common logic you want but when you have one of the worst pitching staffs in the league it won’t help much. Routinely getting punched in the mouth 5-0 in the first inning or routinely blowing an 8th or 9th inning lead has nothing to do with logic.
July 6, 2023 at 4:23 pm #226947I just hope they don’t get the big guy hurt. Closing on a side wall to one side or an oncoming center fielder on the other are the two main ways a corner outfielder gets hurt. And flip flopping them with a guy in his first year playing the position is nothing but malpractice.
July 6, 2023 at 4:39 pm #226950This team has routinely blown 8th and 9th inning leads since Oct. 7th of ’22. A part of me suspects that the evil baseball gypsies were watching and decided it was high time to pounce on a weak and vulnerable mortal who had no idea what he was subjecting himself to with the negligent manner in which he managed that single game…How else can you explain the final play of last night’s ballgame?
July 6, 2023 at 4:43 pm #226952Despite Libby’s terrible outing, I think he has a higher ceiling than Leahy and you need to send him our there every fifth day. It’s not like he is going to prevent this team from a post season spot. We are now playing to see what we might have in store for 2024 and beyond.
Any time you set the expectation of “do good or you are gone”, it makes it tough for a young guy to relax and play.
Sometimes early career experiences are rough, but if you have the tools then things will work out. Just need to be patient. Again, it’s not like this team is going to compete, so play the guys that look to be part of the future.
July 6, 2023 at 4:52 pm #226954Quick out-of-town scoreboard.
Brewers down the Cubs 6-5.
Reds lead Washington 5-3 in the top of the 10th.
Pirates at the Dodgers later tonight.
I am going to go and job and water the landscaping real quick, jump in the tub, and be on the couch with Whitey Herdog for first pitch.

July 6, 2023 at 4:57 pm #226956Good point about the rookie possibly hurting himself in the OF wilderness…He looks a little gangly and plodding out there at times. The area and type of worksite hazards are always fluid and can change in an instant. Hopefully, he’s been afforded at least reasonable amount of courses dedicated to safety instruction…If not, a lawsuit could possibly be forthcoming.
July 6, 2023 at 5:08 pm #226957I don’t know if there is a correlation between 10-7-22 and 7-5-23 but I can tell that you between the final game of last season and the first game of this season there was absolutely zero effort made to improve our pitching staff, which was gross negligence by the man supposedly running this organization.
July 6, 2023 at 5:27 pm #226958Is Leahy one of the guys Mo was talking about before the season when he explained why the Cards decided not to acquire starting pitching and not to raise payroll as previously indicated?
I’m sure most remember Mo saying they just couldn’t get excited about the pitching market, especially since they already had too many starters in their rotation and not enough innings to go around. They already had 6 guys for 5 spots. Why get a 7th guy? So is Leahy one of those guys?
July 6, 2023 at 5:37 pm #226959Well, sure it was gscottar, but at present Johnny possesses the amulet that provides protection from all those evil baseball gypsies that pounced…How else can you explain the continuation of the Johnny/Billy Jr. love affair?
July 6, 2023 at 5:42 pm #226961The only thing I know about Leahy is that the letters in his name are similar to Leake…That’s enough for me.
July 6, 2023 at 5:46 pm #226963
jj-cf-stlParticipantIt’s all about Flaherty’s slider tonight. If he has it two turns in a row, 6.2 IP, 1 ER.
July 6, 2023 at 5:48 pm #226964
jj-cf-stlParticipantLiberatore lacks command of his primary pitches. He has them, but can’t spot them.
July 6, 2023 at 5:52 pm #226965That’s not unlike having a pocket full of worthless currency. Monopoly money?
July 6, 2023 at 5:58 pm #226966Here’s a little factoid…The Cardinals qualified for the post-season every year in which Jon Jay was their primary CF’er.
July 6, 2023 at 6:07 pm #226967Is Leahy one of the guys Mo was talking about before the season when he explained why the Cards decided not to acquire starting pitching and not to raise payroll as previously indicated?
I don’t know, but they sent Leahy to the AFL for some reason.
July 6, 2023 at 6:12 pm #226968That was a nice turn on the GIDP and from what I’ve seen so far in these 4 games, the Marlins look to be very solid with the gloves. They’ve yet to commit an E.
