After reflecting on last night’s loss, my only emotion for this team is pity. They are executing poorly, save for a few flashes of offensive brilliance, and are led by an uninspiring manager. The road ahead looks bleak even for the most talented players, but more importantly for the team as a whole. As far as Oli goes, I mean seriously, after watching how he manages the team and comments on the games, who, of us, let alone the players, would follow him into battle and give 100% every time on the field? I don’t know as much about baseball as I do about leadership, but I can tell you, Marmol ain’t the guy whose going to bring this team to a championship, or as it looks now, even a winning season. Yes, he has to manage the club that Mo gave him, but it takes a leader to set the vision, and he hasn’t done that. Totally agree with the previous comment that there are bad years even for good teams (Mets, Padres), and I’d add Cards to that. A talented team that lacks leadership.

Yes CardsRedSox, I see the same thing. Ollie was groomed as a future manager, and said the right things in the interview and certainly plays along with the role management has given him.

But he does not have good leadership skills. What upper management is missing is the fact that no one has all of the answers. You want to staff people who have the skills that excel in the role they are given, and challenge your thoughts now and then. There is a great book called “Team Of Rivals”, written by Doris Kearnes Goodwin in which she goes in to great detail about Abraham Lincoln’s presidency and how he built his cabinet with people who were not necessarily political allies, but who he knew would be the best for the posts they were given. And Lincoln, like all great leaders, was confident enough to be challenged, even welcoming varied opinions, without needing to always be right.

What has come out of this is Mozeliak appears to be a control freak, and does not want any push back from his staff. It has worked out for a long time, but poor player evaluations and now weak leadership has combined to sabotage a once competitive franchise. It has been all too apparent watching this club that he has the wrong guy at the helm.

The same sense was around the team when Matheny was let go, and we were not nearly this bad. If the all star break comes and goes and Marmol is still our manager, I would be surprised. Then again, maybe not as Mo seems to be willing to let the ship sink to the very bottom and is happy listening to the band play.

Bikemike. You seem to be saying that in choosing field manager and staff, the FO doesn’t have a grasp of the intangibles that matter.

BikeMike, great reference to Team of Rivals. Mo, especially, would do himself well to study those lessons.

Mo is who Mo is and it looks like he’ll be around to continue to screw things up for at least a couple more years….
