I would like to see Monty out there in the 8th – potentially save the bullpen an inning. Try taking Gibson out of a game like this – the manager would have to seek medical attention.
June 20, 2023 at 8:15 pm #225159Goldy can put this one out of reach here as he bats with one out and the bases bursting with Birds in the 8th in a 6-1 St. Louis ballgame.
June 20, 2023 at 8:16 pm #225160Yeah, those 70’s memories are of the Reds, Pirates and especially the two Yankees/Dodgers WS, which were entertaining, but always tempered by not having your favorite team involved in any post-season action at all.
June 20, 2023 at 8:19 pm #225161A Goldy groundout and an Arenado infield pop out results in the Cards just tacking on a single tally in the 8th. 7-1 Good Guys
June 20, 2023 at 8:21 pm #225162I lived in LA for a couple of years in the mid ‘70s – decided to leave college and move out there and live the young, single SoCal life for awhile. Seemed more fun than being in Wyoming. Back then decisions were made based on the moment, and not how it would help me in the future.
Went to a lot of Dodger games. Saw a handful of Angels games, but that was quite a drive. I would go now and then when Nolan Ryan was pitching.
June 20, 2023 at 8:22 pm #225163Ver Hagen not fooling anyone.
June 20, 2023 at 8:24 pm #225164Looks like the Cardinals finally found a team way worse than them. My how the Nationals have fallen the past few years.
June 20, 2023 at 8:25 pm #2251656’6 Texan Drew Verhagen on to ply his trade here in the 8th. And he’s immediately treated rudely as Robles singles off the wall in left, Abrams doubles to right and then an rbi sac fly by Babe Thomas ushers in the Nats’ second run on the evening.
Nats get just the one run.
June 20, 2023 at 8:27 pm #225166I never – NEVER – understood the Reggie Smith for Joe Ferguson trade. Absolute lunacy.
Refresh my memory – who was the complete DA that orchestrated that trade for St. Louis???
June 20, 2023 at 8:31 pm #225167Where in California did you live, BicycleMike. Back in the mid 80’s, a couple college buddies and I used to cruise out to Huntington Beach once a month while attending ASU. We’d hit the big pier in Huntington Beach on Fri nights and then on Saturday mornings we’d drift on down the coast to Laguna Beach.
June 20, 2023 at 8:33 pm #225168I never could figure that out either. That was a Bing Devine deal. Not sure if Gussie ordered Smith traded, like he could do at times, or what. But man, Smith was a talent. If you trade him you have to fill a need.
A comparable deal today would be to deal Arenado for say Luke Voit, in a pre-DH era.
June 20, 2023 at 8:35 pm #225169I think Frank “Trader” Lane had already skipped town when Ferguson came our way for Reggie, Rat……..Paulie just jacked a 2 run bomb making it 9-2 Birds.
June 20, 2023 at 8:39 pm #225170Taking a gander at the out-of-town scoreboard:
Reds up on the Rockies 8-5 in the 8th at Riverfront. Reds on the verge of ten wins in a row.
Arizona up on Milwaukee 4-3 in the 5th at Miller Park. Front Row Amy in attendance again tonight!
The Cubs lead the Pirates 4-0 in the last of the 9th at Three Rivers Stadium. The last thing we need is for the Cubs to be on a roll this weekend, coming into the London series. Let’s hope the Pirates get one from them tomorrow.
About time to watch the Dodgers/Angels from Anaheim. Claritin Kershaw on the hill for the Dodgers.
June 20, 2023 at 8:40 pm #225171I don’t know about you guys, but I’m chomping at the bit to face Chicago in London this weekend……those words have rarely been spoken before. They’re going to wish they never crossed the Big Pond for that series.
June 20, 2023 at 8:42 pm #225172Yeah, Reggie Smith for Joe Ferguson doesn’t make sense. The Cardinals got Smith from the Red Sox for Bernie Carbo and Rick Wise who most know was a Redbird as a result of getting Wise from the Phillies for Carlton. Reggie once claimed Boston was a racist city, so he may have impressed Gussie as a trouble maker and Gussie could be vindictive as witnessed by the Carlton trade and few other instances that I won’t go into.
June 20, 2023 at 8:44 pm #225173Bing Devine was GM as bike Mike said.
06-15-1976 Traded by St. Louis Cardinals to Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for Joe Ferguson, Bob Detherage and Fred Tisdale.
June 20, 2023 at 8:45 pm #225174Woody with the post season beard. 😀
June 20, 2023 at 8:46 pm #225175Freddie Tisdale was a player, TexasCard! Just not a very good ML player.
June 20, 2023 at 8:48 pm #225176Yeah Pugs, the Cardinals will demonstrate to all those Limeys the proper way for an American Big League baseball team to thoroughly destroy a NL rival that dates back almost to the War of 1812…Haha!
June 20, 2023 at 8:51 pm #225177I remember another Cardinal pitcher that wore 44, had an eight letter last name and it started with a “W”. Anyone else remember that guy?
June 20, 2023 at 8:52 pm #225178“In the 1981 season as a member of the Dodgers, Smith was taunted by Giants fan Michael Dooley, who then threw a batting helmet at him. Smith then jumped into the stands at Candlestick Park and started punching him. He was ejected from the game, and Dooley was arrested. Five months later, Smith joined the Giants as a free agent.”
Wow, I had forgotten about that incident. He was out of the league 6 years after the Cardinals traded him.
Funny, here’s an old board discussion…

June 20, 2023 at 8:53 pm #225179In our team’s storied history, we’ve had an Edmonds and an Edman patrolling center field. And other “Ed”‘s? I believe we had an Edwards once, but he was a catcher……oh how about Ed Soiezio?…..no, infielder I think.
June 20, 2023 at 8:54 pm #225180I remember another Cardinal pitcher that wore 44, had an eight letter last name and it started with a “W”. Anyone else remember that guy?
Woodford & Washburn
June 20, 2023 at 8:55 pm #225181#44. Woody Williams, BicycleMike?
June 20, 2023 at 8:57 pm #225182I knew both Izzy and Kline wore #44, Bikemike, but I had to look up the one who’s name began with a W, so I won’t say anything. I don’t want any spiders in my hot dog…Haha!
