Yeah, he’s doing real good. If you throw in last season with the Red Sox he’s 18-4. I’m surprised SD didn’t sign him up for more than 1 year after he went 11-2 with Boston in ’22. I just looked him up and he’s making $3.5M less than Matz this season. At any rate, if he keeps up the good work, he may someday command the type of contract that Johnny awarded Matz.
Yeah, I still don’t get the gist on a guy like Matz. Wacha’s had his troubles, but he’s a .609 career pitcher. Matz is .463 with over 300 less innings of work in his career than Wacha.
Matz is a lefty and the Cardinals always seem to be trying to work a reverse deal from the one they did in Spring 1972. That was the first thing I thought of when I read about the Arozarena/Liberatore deal – “Hoping they got the next Carlton.”
They even gave Matz Carlton’s number, although maybe Steven chose it. At least Libby does not have to deal with that.
My first introduction to the cruel world of baseball hyberbole came as a still relatively young and naive teenager as I was snared right into the trap when I heard Pete Falcone’s name mentioned in the same sentence as Sandy Koufax…I’ve never fogotten how easily I was hoodwinked and it’s been a valuable lesson ever since.
2 run dinger for Carlson. He crushes lefties. Too bad he’s below replacement level most of the time against righties. Maybe he should pull an Edman and stop switch hitting all the time?

Edit…I couldn’t find it anywhere else until I searched around on this website and found that the 2 games are broadcast on FOX and ESPN. Nice job, BW! If it’s accurate…Haha!
That double SB leads to 2 runs. I would have guessed that the Redbirds would have done a lot more running this season, but that’s not easy to do seeing as how as much as they’ve been trailing in games all season long. At any rate, I would have guessed they’d have at least 3 guys with double digit totals in SB’s by now and that Eddie would have 35 to 40 by the end of the year.
I’ve often wondered what would happen on a challenge of a close play at HP that was a walk-off scoring run that would decide a WS or other post-season series. I guess all the players and fans would have to sit around in suspense and wait for the return call from headquarters in NY. Not too long ago they would have had trouble clearing the field of the thousands of fans that had already cascaded onto the field to “Go crazy folks!”
Ooo, man – thought Arenado would jump on that 2-0 pitch from Ward. That was a meat ball – could have crushed it a mile. Still he gets the 2-2 pitch to the right side to move Goldy to third with 1 out. Nice work.
Contreras takes an outside pitch to right to plate the run. For some odd reason these guys are doing things right, although the competition might have something to do with that. We are playing a team with about the same record as us.
That strike one to Carlson was no where near the plate. But the 0-1 was a pitch he should have unloaded on. Might have gotten a break on the 0-2.
It seems a bit odd that Carlson is better from the right side, especially being left handed. Seems like most switch hitters are better from the left side as they see so many more righties than lefties.
I think Mantle felt he was a better right-handed hitter though. Ted Simmons was a lot better from the left side early in his career, but he worked on his right-handed hitting and got better from that side.
I recall Reggie Smith crushing balls from the left side. Hated that trade by the way – Smith to the Dodgers for Joe Ferguson. What the heck did we need Ferguson for when we had Simmons?? The ‘70s were rough, so if you were not there be glad you did not have to go through it, at least as a Cardinal fan.
I don’t know if they even do this anymore, but I’d have to believe that if Montgomery were asked how he felt about working the 8th, he’d tell his manager that he’d fist fight him in order to get the baseball to start the inning.

Yep, hated seeing Reggie Smith go to LA, BicycleMike. I was barely out of diapers, but I was elated when we got Reggie from Boston. There’s just something about getting a power hitter in a trade that just tickles one’s fancy to no end. Gant and Davis were a couple of other big boppers that got me super excited when I first heard the news they were headed to St. Louis.
